Is There a Way to Stop a Pokémon From Fleeing?

Whether you can stop a Pokémon from fleeing depends on the game—and whether it runs before battle or tries to escape during one.

Sometimes—but the right answer depends on when the Pokémon tries to flee and which game you’re playing. In a turn-based battle, certain moves and abilities can prevent escape in applicable games. If a Pokémon runs after spotting you in an overworld area, the answer may be to avoid being seen rather than use a trapping move.

First, identify when it runs

  • Before a battle: The Pokémon spots you in the overworld and runs away. This is a detection problem, not the same as escaping a turn-based battle.
  • During a turn-based battle: The wild Pokémon attempts to flee from the battle. Some trapping moves and abilities can prevent that attempt, depending on the game and target.

If you want a precise recommendation, identify the game and whether the Pokémon flees before battle or during it.

When a wild Pokémon tries to escape during battle

In applicable games, trapping effects can stop a wild Pokémon from attempting to flee. The mechanics reference lists Shadow Tag, Arena Trap against grounded opponents, Magnet Pull against Steel types, and trapping moves—including binding moves and Ingrain from Generation II onward—as relevant methods. The mechanics have generation-specific exceptions, so no single method is guaranteed across the series. See Bulbapedia’s escape mechanics reference.

Check whether the target is affected

Arena Trap is not universal: it affects grounded opponents, with exceptions including Flying types and certain raised or levitating targets. Its effect also depends on the user remaining in battle. Diglett, Dugtrio, and Trapinch are among Pokémon associated with the ability, but availability varies by generation. The details are in Bulbapedia’s Arena Trap reference.

Confirm the game’s mechanics and availability

Before building a team around a trapper, check that the move or ability works in your game, that you can obtain a Pokémon with it, and that it affects your target. The available mechanics references do not establish one guaranteed trapper for every title.

When a Pokémon runs before battle

For wild-zone encounters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the official gameplay guidance recommends hiding out of sight or approaching from behind when a Pokémon might flee after spotting you. It also says you can battle Pokémon to lower their HP, making them easier to catch. These are separate parts of the encounter: stealth helps you avoid triggering flight, while lowering HP helps once battle begins. Read The Pokémon Company International’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A gameplay page.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A uses real-time battles, so do not assume that trapping advice for older turn-based encounters applies to an overworld chase. The official page’s guidance for Pokémon that flee upon noticing you is to manage your approach.
