Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is worth considering if you want a strategy game where diplomacy, character relationships and faction politics matter alongside empire-building and real-time battles. Critics have generally liked it, though the favorable scores are snapshots—not a guarantee that its campaign or learning curve will suit every player.
What kind of strategy game is it?
Released on PC on May 23, 2019, Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is set in ancient China and combines a turn-based campaign with real-time battles. Creative Assembly developed it; SEGA published it. The campaign covers governing and expanding a faction, while battles resolve military conflicts on the battlefield. Steam’s product listing identifies the game and its format.
Its distinctive emphasis is on the people within a faction, not just the territory it controls. The official Total War: THREE KINGDOMS PC manual describes characters whose allegiances can change, along with friendships, rivalries and espionage linked through Guanxi. As the manual puts it, “The characters you meet, recruit and clash with over the course of your campaigns become vital parts of both the game itself and the overarching narrative you create whilst on your quest to unify China.”
What do the reviews say?
Metacritic classifies critic reception as “Generally Favorable.” In its 2026 page snapshot, the game has an 85 Metascore based on 64 critic reviews: 57 positive, seven mixed and none negative. The same page shows a 7.5 user score from 462 ratings, with 69% positive, 15% mixed and 15% negative. Those are Metacritic’s figures and categories, not a universal measure of player opinion. Steam’s separate 2026 snapshot shows 84% positive from 17,269 English-language user reviews; Steam says it excludes periods of off-topic review activity from the product score. Recent English reviews on the listing were 77% positive from 132 reviews. Steam and Metacritic use different audiences and methods, so their figures should be read separately rather than combined. Diplomacy and strategic depth
Metacritic review excerpts praise the expanded diplomacy and management, while GamesRadar+’s retrospective highlights character-driven politics, relationships and strategic depth. Learning curve and campaign limitations
The same review record includes a critic’s warning about a steep learning curve and another reviewer’s view that the installment lacks a distinctive “wow factor.” GamesRadar+ also identifies campaign AI and the available starting scenarios as limitations. These are individual editorial judgments, but they are useful cautions if you prefer a straightforward campaign or expect every run to feel substantially different.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Good fit: Players who want a campaign where diplomacy, espionage, character allegiances and relationships complement territorial expansion.
- Potentially less appealing: Players who want a simpler onboarding experience, or who are especially sensitive to campaign AI and scenario variety concerns raised by reviewers.
- Consider your preferred tone: The game foregrounds named characters in combat and narrative. The available evidence does not establish enough detail for a thorough comparison of its battle presentations or modes, so choose based on the character-led premise rather than assumptions about specific mode mechanics.
Should you buy the base game or an add-on?
Steam lists the base game alongside multiple DLC products and a larger bundle. The listings establish that these are separate purchasing options, but do not establish that any particular add-on is essential.
