Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike action RPG, according to its developer and official storefront. It pairs familiar genre elements—stamina-managed fights, parries, bosses, death-related resource recovery, checkpoints, and secret-hunting—with a first-person view and a mix of melee weapons, firearms, and supernatural abilities. The camera is its clearest difference from most Soulslikes; it changes how players read space and attacks, rather than removing the genre’s familiar combat and progression conventions.
Why Valor Mortis qualifies as a Soulslike
The Soulslike label is not based on the camera alone. Valor Mortis’s developer has described the game in terms of recognizable genre conventions: challenging boss fights, recovering resources associated with death, checkpoint-like Lanterns, and backtracking to find secrets. A Valor Mortis community manager, speaking in comments quoted by GamesRadar, characterized its format as including recollecting “souls,” lighting “bonfires,” and fighting very challenging bosses.

That makes “first-person Soulslike” a more useful description than treating it as either a conventional third-person Soulslike or an action RPG with no clear genre identity. Its presentation is unusual for the category, but its announced loop and progression are recognizably Soulslike.

How its combat works
Valor Mortis combines melee combat with firearms and supernatural Transmutations. Its announced combat tools include light and heavy attacks, stamina management, parries, and counterattacks. Those systems put timing and defensive choices at the center of encounters, while the mix of ranges and abilities gives players more than a single way to engage an enemy.

Timing and defense
Stamina management means attacks and defensive actions must be considered as part of a limited combat rhythm. Parrying and counterattacking add opportunities to respond to enemy attacks rather than relying only on offense. The developer also describes demanding boss fights as a core part of the experience.
Melee, firearms, and Transmutations
Unlike a melee-only framing of the genre, Valor Mortis has firearms alongside melee weapons, plus supernatural Transmutations. The available announcements establish this mix, but do not provide enough detail to compare exact weapon statistics, ability costs, or optimal builds.

What the first-person view changes
Most Soulslikes are played from a third-person camera, which keeps the player character and more of the surrounding arena in view. Valor Mortis shifts that perspective to first person. One More Level brand manager Michał Azarewicz told VGTimes that this is the main difference from other games in the genre.
In practical terms, a first-person view changes spatial awareness: players read attack direction, distance, enemy position, and the space around them from a different viewpoint. The developer has discussed awareness, field of view, and depth perception as specific challenges in adapting Soulslike play to first person. It has also said dynamic field-of-view scaling was used to improve the readability of large bosses. These are design explanations from the studio, not independent findings about how clearly the finished game communicates every encounter.

How it compares with other action RPGs
“Action RPG” covers many combat designs, so there is no single template to compare against. A useful distinction is that Valor Mortis brings Soulslike-style timing, boss encounters, resource recovery, checkpoints, and exploration together with a first-person perspective and mixed combat ranges.
| Combat or progression axis | Valor Mortis | How that fits the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Viewpoint | First person | Unlike the third-person presentation found in most Soulslikes, changing how players read distance and attacks. |
| Timing and defense | Stamina management, light and heavy attacks, parries, and counterattacks | Supports deliberate timing and defensive responses associated with Soulslike combat. |
| Combat range | Melee weapons, firearms, and supernatural Transmutations | Combines close-range fighting with ranged and ability-based options. |
| Death and progression | Catalysts are spent at Lanterns and dropped where William dies, according to the publisher | Connects resource recovery after death with checkpoint-based upgrades. |
| Exploration and encounters | Backtracking for secrets and challenging bosses | Uses familiar Soulslike exploration and boss-design conventions. |
Lanterns, Catalysts, and build customization
Lanterns serve as places for upgrades and build customization. The publisher says Catalysts are spent at Lanterns and dropped at the spot where William dies, making death part of the resource loop rather than simply a failed encounter. The exact upgrade costs, full Catalyst economy, and breadth of available builds are not established in the cited announcements.

What is known about the release
As of October 11, 2026, the publisher had scheduled Valor Mortis to launch on October 13, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The publisher announced standard editions at $39.99 / €39.99 / 149.99 zł and Deluxe editions at $59.99 / €59.99 / 199.99 zł. These are dated announcement prices, so check the relevant storefront for current availability and pricing. The studio estimated a 20-hour story in its Steam announcement; that is a developer estimate, not an independently measured completion time.
The developer has said it made improvements after demo feedback concerning combat readability, hitbox range, enemy staggering, boss difficulty, performance, and the balance between platforming and combat. It also cautioned that the demo was not representative of the full game’s planned launch polish. Those statements describe the studio’s response and expectations; they do not verify post-launch performance, final balance, or reception.
