If you want the story in order, play The Talos Principle first, then The Talos Principle 2, and save the Road to Elysium expansion for after the sequel. The first game establishes its AI-in-a-simulation premise; the sequel carries that context into a broader story while adding puzzle abilities. You can start with the sequel, though: it introduces a new setting and central mystery of its own.
Which Talos Principle should you play first?
Start with The Talos Principle if you care about the series’ narrative progression. Its premise places a sentient AI in a simulation of humanity’s ruins, and the sequel continues from that foundation. The original was released on December 11, 2014; Croteam’s catalogue lists it on PC, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, iOS, and Android.

Playing the original first is a story-context recommendation, not a requirement for understanding the sequel. The Talos Principle 2 gives newcomers a distinct setup: biological humanity is gone, a society of robots preserves human culture, and the player investigates a mysterious megastructure. It was released on November 2, 2023, and Croteam lists it for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

The Talos Principle: an AI and a metaphysical puzzle
The original frames its puzzles around an AI exploring a simulation. Its PlayStation description presents the experience as a metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning in a doomed world. Its premise is intimate in perspective: the player encounters the question of what it means to be intelligent and human from inside the simulation.

The official listing describes it as a character-driven interactive story, with choices that affect events and multiple endings. Returning writers Jonas Kyratzes and Tom Jubert were joined by Verena Kyratzes. See the Steam listing and PlayStation overview.
How are the puzzles different?
The original’s official description emphasizes puzzles that grow increasingly complex. The sequel retains established mechanics and adds gravity manipulation and mind transference, creating new ways to approach its challenges. It also includes metapuzzles and optional Gold puzzles described as highly challenging. The sequel allows a flexible completion approach: players may finish without solving every puzzle or aim for complete mastery.

These descriptions do not establish that one base game is objectively harder. They do point to different kinds of challenge: increasing complexity in the original, and a broader mix of familiar tools, new abilities, metapuzzles, and optional high-difficulty puzzles in the sequel.
Can you start with The Talos Principle 2?
Yes. The sequel’s robot-society premise and megastructure mystery give it a clear entry point, so a newcomer can follow its central setup without first playing the original. Starting with the first game is still the better fit if you want the premise and series context in release order. Choose the sequel first if its setting or newer puzzle abilities are what interest you most, accepting that you will encounter the story’s next step before its foundation.
