Vaultbreakers has a free Steam demo, but the complete game is not currently free to play. BetaDwarf says the full release is planned as a premium purchase at launch, although that plan can still change. The full game is not yet available on Steam, no launch price has been announced in the cited official material, and the store listing gives no confirmed release date.
The demo is a limited PvE introduction rather than the whole product. You can carry Legacy Points into permanent rewards after launch, but ordinary demo progress—including character, item, quest, or run progress—is not promised to transfer and may be reset before release.

What is free, and what is not?
The Steam demo is free to download
The currently available Vaultbreakers demo costs nothing to download through Steam. It is an early, deliberately limited slice of the game, so “free demo” should not be read as “free-to-play game.” The demo lets you try the core loop, a small selection of content, and cooperative play before the commercial release.

BetaDwarf’s official FAQ answers the question “Will the game be free to play?” by saying that the game is currently planned to be premium at launch. The same statement says the decision is not final and could change before release. “Premium” indicates a paid purchase rather than a permanently free-to-play launch, but the sources do not establish the eventual price, editions, downloadable content policy, or other launch terms.
#1 Best Overall
There is no full-game purchase yet
Steam currently marks the full Vaultbreakers release as unavailable. Its release-date field says “To be announced,” so there is no confirmed day on which the paid version can be bought and played. BetaDwarf has said it is aiming for 2027 and is focusing on PC and consoles, but that target is not a guaranteed launch date and the cited material does not name a final list of console platforms.

What the Vaultbreakers demo includes
Two playable Vaultbreakers
The demo gives you two Vaultbreakers to learn. That is a fixed character selection for the current test build, not a promise that the finished roster will contain only two heroes. The available characters provide the practical way to test movement, combat roles, abilities, and cooperative combinations within the demo’s boundaries.
A section of Wolfswood
You can explore part of the Wolfswood map. The area is not the complete game world; it is the portion used for the demo’s onboarding and early missions. Expect the map, encounters, and objectives to represent an introduction to the systems rather than a complete sample of every region planned for launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOnboarding and quests through the first Vaultbreak
The included main-quest path runs through the first Vaultbreak. New players receive the introductory guidance needed to understand the game’s basic loop, then progress through the early objectives available in the test build. Reaching the end of that path does not mean you have completed the full campaign or seen all endgame systems.

An upgradable Haven and perks
The demo contains a Haven that can be upgraded, along with perks to unlock and use. These systems show how the game layers longer-term decisions onto individual runs. Because ordinary demo progression is not retained for launch, upgrades and perks earned now should be treated as practice and experimentation, except where a reward is explicitly tied to Legacy Points.
Co-op for up to three players
Solo play is not the only option. The demo supports co-op with up to two friends, allowing a party of three players in total. The “up to two friends” limit describes the current demo’s party size; it should not be interpreted as a confirmed limit for the final game.
PvE only in the demo
The current demo is player-versus-environment (PvE). You fight the game’s enemies and challenges rather than other player teams. A separate Alpha Test is intended to let players test PvPvE—player-versus-player combat inside an environment also containing computer-controlled threats—so the demo should not be used as evidence that the present build already includes that mode.

How progression and carryover work
Legacy Points are the exception
Legacy Points are the one progression category the official materials identify as carrying beyond the demo. They unlock rewards described as permanent after launch. If you want to maximize what your demo time can contribute to the eventual release, focus on the activities that award Legacy Points and verify the current in-game explanation for how those points are earned.

- SCORE POINTS: Earn gear tokens, the ultimate measure of success, based on the position of cards in your vault, their suit, or card patterns.

Ordinary demo progress does not transfer
The Steam demo listing states that progress, except for Legacy Points, will not carry over from the demo to the game release. It also warns that demo progress might be reset before the full launch. That means you should not assume that a character level, Haven upgrade, perk unlock, inventory item, quest state, map discovery, or similar run data will survive.
The statement is broader than a simple “your save file will be deleted.” It leaves room for the developers to reset the demo during testing and makes no promise about individual categories of progression. The only specifically identified carryover is Legacy Points and the permanent rewards they unlock.
What this means for your playtime
- Use the demo to learn controls, builds, enemies, map routes, and cooperative tactics.
- Treat non-Legacy progression as temporary and avoid grinding solely to preserve a level, item, or upgrade.
- Record your own build ideas or preferred characters outside the game if you want to reproduce them later.
- Check the current demo notes or in-game notices for any reset announcement before investing in a new progression goal.
Release timing and the Alpha Test schedule
2027 is a target, not a confirmed date
BetaDwarf’s FAQ identifies 2027 as the aim for the full game. Steam still lists the release date as “To be announced,” which is the more direct store status for availability. Until a firm date is published, do not plan around a specific month, launch-day purchase, or guaranteed console release.

The developer announcement describes an Alpha Test beginning October 15, 2026, at 10:00 CEST and ending October 21, 2026, at 23:59 CEST. The main Steam listing describes the test as running through October 22. Those are conflicting end dates from official channels, and the schedule is time-sensitive.

For the latest access window, check the current Vaultbreakers Steam listing and BetaDwarf’s announcement immediately before joining. Do not treat October 21 or October 22 as an immutable deadline without checking the live notice. The Alpha Test is separate from the free demo and is the event associated with testing PvPvE features.
How to try the free demo
- Open Steam and search for the official Vaultbreakers demo listing.
- Select the demo’s download or install option; no full-game purchase is required for this build.
- Launch the game and complete the onboarding sequence to learn the available controls and systems.
- Choose one of the two available Vaultbreakers and play through the Wolfswood content toward the first Vaultbreak.
- Upgrade the Haven, experiment with perks, and invite up to two friends if you want to test the three-player co-op experience.
- Track Legacy Points if permanent post-launch rewards matter to you, while assuming all other demo progress is temporary.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
“Free demo” does not mean “free-to-play launch”
A demo is a limited preview distributed at no charge. A free-to-play launch would mean the complete game is available without an upfront purchase, often with a different monetization model. BetaDwarf’s current plan is premium at launch, so the two terms describe different things.
The demo is not the whole game
Two characters, part of one map, early quests, a Haven, perks, and a three-player co-op limit describe the current test scope. They do not establish the final number of characters, regions, missions, upgrades, or endgame activities.
PvE demo footage is not proof of a PvPvE release feature
The demo itself is PvE only. PvPvE is being associated with a separate Alpha Test, so players interested in competitive encounters should look for that test’s current participation information rather than expecting it in the ordinary demo.

Legacy Points are not a full save transfer
Legacy Points provide a defined carryover path to permanent rewards. The official wording does not promise transfer of levels, equipment, quest completion, Haven state, perks, or any other ordinary save data.
The 2027 aim is not a reservation date
A target year can move as development changes. Steam’s “To be announced” status means a confirmed launch date has not been published, and the final price remains unannounced in the cited official information.
Who should download it now?
The demo is a good fit if you want to learn Vaultbreakers’ combat and movement, sample the first Wolfswood missions, test the Haven and perk systems, or play a short cooperative PvE session with friends. It is also the appropriate way to see whether the game’s core loop appeals to you before deciding about a future premium purchase.
It is a poor fit if you are looking for a complete campaign, a guaranteed permanent character build, a full competitive mode, or a confirmed launch price. Those expectations go beyond what the current demo and official release information establish.
Bottom line
Vaultbreakers is free to try through its Steam demo, not confirmed as a free-to-play full game. BetaDwarf currently plans a premium launch, with a 2027 target but no fixed date or announced price. The demo offers a limited PvE introduction—two Vaultbreakers, part of Wolfswood, early quests, Haven upgrades, perks, and co-op with up to two friends. Only Legacy Points are identified as carrying into permanent rewards; other demo progress can be reset and will not transfer to release.
