Video game venture-capital funding was still falling in 2024, and roughly 90% or more of the funding in Konvoy Ventures’ reported period went to early-stage deals. That figure describes a specific historical window—not a permanent feature of the market. By Q2 2025, InvestGame’s deal-volume data showed a less concentrated stage mix, though it cannot be directly compared with the earlier funding-value share.
What the 2024 funding figures show
Konvoy Ventures counted $492 million across 104 gaming VC deals in Q2 2024. Funding was down 20% from Q1 2024 and 7% from Q2 2023. Deal count fell 22% quarter over quarter and 12% year over year. Q1-to-Q2 declines can reflect seasonality, so the year-over-year comparison is the more useful check on the direction of the market. Konvoy’s Q2 2024 report provides the quarterly figures.
The first-half figures tell a similar story. GamesBeat, reporting Konvoy data, put disclosed games VC funding at $1.093 billion in H1 2024, 20% below H1 2023. Deal count declined from 264 to 238, a 10% drop. The report characterized the pace of decline as slowing compared with the much steeper 2022–23 contraction. GamesBeat’s report covers the H1 totals.
What “90% goes to early stage” means
The headline figure is about the share of funding going to early-stage rounds, not the share of startups funded or the share of all gaming investment. Konvoy’s Q2 2024 report says roughly 90% or more of gaming VC funding went to early-stage deals from Q4 2022 onward, with Q4 2023 as an exception. GamesBeat separately describes 89% of placements since Q1 2022 as going to early-stage startups. These are different time windows and formulations; they should not be treated as the same calculation.

In the Konvoy chart, “early stage” means Pre-Seed through Series A; “growth” means Series B through D; and “late” means Series E and later. The chart is sourced to CB Insights, whose historical data may be revised as additional deals become public. InvestGame’s reproduction of the Q2 2024 report includes the stage definitions and data note.
Are studios still raising Series B and later rounds?
Later-stage rounds were comparatively scarce in the 2024 account, but that does not mean they stopped altogether. GamesBeat relayed Konvoy’s view that a lack of Series B and later deals may reflect companies whose previous rounds came before U.S. interest-rate hikes began in March 2022. That is an attributed explanation, not proof that rate hikes alone caused the later-stage shortfall.

For studios, the practical distinction is between a broad market pattern and an individual company’s prospects. The reported stage mix suggests a tougher environment for companies seeking larger follow-on rounds during that period; it does not establish that a particular studio cannot raise or predict its terms.
Why the 2025 figures are not a direct reversal
InvestGame’s Q2 2025 preview reported a more balanced mix by deal volume: pre-seed and seed were 31.9% of deals year to date, early stage and late stage were roughly 29% each, and venture growth was about 10%. In Q2 2025, pre-seed/seed combined with early stage accounted for 61.1% of gaming VC deal volume. The preview said investors favored established companies with commercial traction. InvestGame’s Q2 2025 preview reports those shares.

- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Those percentages count deals, whereas the 2024 “90%” finding concerns funding value. A large later-stage round can represent much more money than several seed deals, so a deal-count mix cannot demonstrate an equivalent shift in dollars. The later figures do, however, show that the early-stage concentration was not equally pronounced across every measure and period.

Market headlines can combine venture rounds with acquisitions and other private-equity transactions. S&P Global Market Intelligence counted 208 video-game PE M&A and funding deals in 2025, down 45% year over year. Its reported investment value was $55.92 billion, but EA’s $55.19 billion acquisition accounted for nearly all of it; excluding EA, the value was $842 million. These are broader PE transaction figures, not a measure of VC funding alone. S&P Global’s 2026 analysis attributes lower 2025 deal volume to factors including investor focus on AI and weaker consumer demand.
