Nintendo explicitly says not to use window cleaner on Wii, Wii mini, GameCube, and Wii U discs. Use the cleaning method recommended for your console or disc format instead.
Why Windex is a poor choice for game discs
Nintendo’s guidance for Wii, Wii mini, and GameCube discs explicitly rules out window cleaner, along with several other solvents and abrasive cleaners. Its Wii U guidance also advises against window cleaner. Follow the instructions for the specific console rather than assuming a cleaner safe for one device or surface is safe for every disc. Nintendo’s Wii, Wii mini, and GameCube disc instructions and Nintendo’s Wii U disc instructions provide the details.
Sony’s guidance for CD, DVD, and Blu-ray media warns against commercially available disc or lens cleaners and says liquid cleaners can damage disc contents. It recommends a soft cloth instead. Sony’s cleaning guidance was last modified January 30, 2024.
What to use for a Nintendo game disc
Wii, Wii mini, and GameCube
- Dampen a clean, soft cotton cloth with water only.
- Wipe the non-labeled side in straight strokes from the inside rim toward the outside rim.
- Use a dry part of the cloth to dry the disc.
- Wait until the disc is completely dry before inserting it. Nintendo specifies waiting at least two minutes after the water is gone.
These steps follow Nintendo’s instructions for Wii, Wii mini, and GameCube.

Wii U
Nintendo also recommends water and a soft cotton cloth for Wii U discs, and says to let the disc dry fully before inserting it. See Nintendo’s Wii U cleaning instructions for its method.
CD, DVD, or Blu-ray media
Sony recommends wiping with a soft, dry cloth from the center outward. For a badly soiled disc, its guidance says to moisten a soft cloth with water, then wipe away the remaining moisture with a dry, soft cloth. These are Sony’s instructions for CD, DVD, and Blu-ray media; don’t treat the wiping directions as a universal rule for every console disc.

Are Windex Gaming Wipes safe for discs?
Windex describes its Gaming Wipes for gaming and electronic equipment surfaces, such as consoles, controllers, and keyboards, and tells users to follow equipment manufacturers’ instructions. Its product page does not recommend the wipes for game discs. Cleaning a console’s exterior is different from cleaning its disc; don’t infer disc safety from a product marketed for gaming equipment. What cleaners should you avoid?
- Window cleaner on the Nintendo disc types covered above.
- For CD, DVD, or Blu-ray media, commercially available disc or lens cleaners, solvents such as benzine or thinner, and anti-static spray intended for vinyl records, as cautioned against in the applicable manufacturer guidance.
- Any cleaner whose instructions don’t establish that it is suitable for the particular disc. Follow the disc or console maker’s instructions.
