No Xbox release announcement confirmed a 2026 console called Xbox Prime. That name and date came from a January 2025 rumor; Xbox has since named its next-generation console Project Helix. The company says developer alpha hardware is planned to begin shipping in 2027, but has not announced when consumers can buy it.
Where the Xbox Prime rumor came from
On January 6, 2025, GameSpot reported a claim by Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope that the next Xbox would arrive in 2026 and be called “Xbox Prime.” The report noted that it was unclear whether Xbox Prime was a final name or a codename. It was rumor reporting, not a launch plan announced by Xbox.
What Xbox has officially announced
On March 11, 2026, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald announced Project Helix as the name of the company’s next-generation console. Xbox says it is powered by a custom AMD SoC and is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Those are announced design aims, not a complete specification sheet or independently tested performance results.
Xbox also said it planned to begin shipping alpha versions of the hardware to developers in 2027. That describes a development milestone: it does not establish a consumer release date, nor does it mean the console will be available in stores that year. In an April 23, 2026 strategy statement, Xbox again listed delivering Project Helix among its hardware priorities, without providing a retail launch window.

What this means if you are deciding whether to buy an Xbox now
There is no confirmed Project Helix retail date or price to compare with a current console purchase. If you need to play now, make the decision based on the games and cost of currently available hardware rather than treating Xbox Prime or a 2026 launch as certain. If you can wait, follow Xbox’s official announcements for a consumer date, price, and final specifications; the developer alpha milestone alone cannot tell you when retail systems will ship.

- Whether Xbox Prime was ever intended as a final product name.
- Project Helix’s consumer release date and price.
- Its complete final consumer specifications.
- Whether it will be tied to a particular Call of Duty release. The January 2025 report’s Call of Duty connection was a rumor, not an Xbox-confirmed launch plan.
Xbox’s official Project Helix announcement and its April 2026 strategy statement are the useful references for updates; neither gives consumers a release date.
