Is XCOM 2: War of the Chosen Canon?

War of the Chosen is an XCOM 2 expansion and is best understood as part of the series continuity, though official sources do not define one canonical outcome for every campaign.

Yes: XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is best understood as part of the XCOM 2 continuity, not as a separate timeline. 2K identifies it as an expansion to XCOM 2, and the developers and publisher place later XCOM material in the context of that game and its expansion. The qualification: the cited official sources do not issue a formal ruling using the exact phrase “War of the Chosen is canon,” or establish one fixed outcome for every player’s campaign.

Why War of the Chosen is considered canon

2K describes War of the Chosen as an expansion to XCOM 2, adding content to the existing game rather than presenting it as a separate sequel or alternate continuity. Its additions include resistance factions, the Chosen, hero classes, enemies, missions, environments, and strategic gameplay features. 2K’s overview and its support guide frame it as an expanded XCOM 2 experience.

There is also continuity context in the next released story. In a 2020 interview, Firaxis lead designer Mark Nauta discussed Chimera Squad as a project developed after XCOM 2 and War of the Chosen, and described its standalone story as part of the broader XCOM universe. Game Informer’s interview supports reading the expansion as part of the franchise’s continuity, though it is not itself a formal canon declaration.

How Chimera Squad fits into the timeline

2K says Chimera Squad takes place five years after XCOM 2, following humanity’s victory and the beginning of cooperation between humans and aliens. That official placement makes Chimera Squad a later story in the world established by XCOM 2, rather than an unrelated setting. See 2K’s Chimera Squad synopsis.

Nauta also explained that Firaxis pursued Chimera Squad after releasing XCOM 2 and its War of the Chosen expansion. His comments connect the expansion to the series of work from which the later game emerged; they do not spell out a definitive historical account of every campaign event.

Does canon mean every campaign plays out the same way?

No single canonical result for every optional mission, strategic choice, soldier, or randomized event is established by these sources. They support the broad continuity answer—War of the Chosen belongs to the XCOM 2 branch of the franchise—but do not identify one official playthrough as the version that all players’ stories must follow.

  • This rebellion-themed content pack introduces more than 100 new exotic customizations for the entire arsenal of armors available to your XCOM soldiers.
  • Transform the soldiers of XCOM into an elite alien hunting squad with impressive new weapons and armor to face off against new alien Rulers that will pursue your squad across an entire campaign.

That distinction matters because “canon” can mean either that a game belongs to the franchise’s continuity or that every detail of its events has one fixed, officially selected outcome. The publisher and developer statements support the first meaning. They do not settle the second.

Is it a separate XCOM 2 timeline?

The official descriptions treat War of the Chosen as an expansion integrated into XCOM 2, not as a separately framed timeline. Calling it part of the continuity is therefore the strongest supported answer. More precisely, it is a conclusion drawn from how 2K and Firaxis describe the expansion and subsequent XCOM story; the sources cited here do not quote an explicit, standalone canon ruling.
