What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A gaming laptop that gets hot and loud during a demanding game is often working as designed. High frame rates, ray tracing, charging, warm rooms, and performance modes can all increase heat and fan noise. The warning signs are not heat alone, but heat combined with sustained throttling, stuttering, crashes, shutdowns, a fan that fails to spin, or unusually high temperatures during light use.
Work through the low-risk checks below before considering internal repairs. Monitor the CPU and GPU, improve airflow, reduce unnecessary workload, and use your laptop’s built-in thermal controls. If instability or fan failure continues, use warranty or professional service rather than opening the laptop immediately.

First, determine whether it is actually overheating
“Running hot” can describe several different things:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Surface heat: The keyboard, underside, palm rest, or area near an exhaust feels hot. This does not directly reveal the CPU or GPU temperature.
- Component temperature: A sensor reports the temperature of the CPU package or GPU.
- Fan noise: Fans speed up to remove heat. This is usually expected during gaming, particularly in Performance or Turbo mode.
- Thermal throttling: The laptop reduces clock speed, power, or utilization to control temperature.
- Overheating symptoms: Persistent high temperatures are accompanied by severe stuttering, falling clock speeds, crashes, restarts, shutdowns, or a fan that is not operating correctly.
There is no universal “safe” temperature for every gaming laptop. Limits vary by processor, GPU, chassis, firmware, cooling design, ambient temperature, and the manufacturer’s performance profile. For example, HP publishes different example thermal triggers for particular Intel and AMD systems, including 97°C for some Intel systems, 105°C for AMD R4000 systems, and 95°C for AMD R5000 systems. Those figures are not a rule for every modern laptop. See your manufacturer’s model-specific guidance instead (HP’s OMEN and Victus guidance).

Heat only while playing a demanding game, with stable performance, may be normal. Heat during ordinary browsing, a rapidly worsening temperature trend, repeated crashes, or a non-functional fan deserves investigation.
Run a useful temperature check
Do not judge the laptop from one instantaneous temperature reading. Record the whole pattern:
- Let the laptop sit idle for several minutes and note CPU and GPU temperatures.
- Open the same game with the same graphics settings and play for 10–20 minutes.
- Record peak CPU and GPU temperatures, utilization, clock speeds, fan speed if available, power draw, frame rate, and any thermal- or power-throttling indicators.
- Repeat the test after each change so you can tell whether an intervention helped.
Your laptop maker’s control panel may display these values. For more detailed sensors, HWiNFO can monitor and log hardware data. HWiNFO’s add-on documentation explains how its sensor values can be displayed in MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner Statistics Server overlays. MSI Afterburner is available through MSI’s official support page.
Look for trends rather than a single peak. A laptop that reaches a high temperature briefly but maintains stable clocks may be behaving differently from one that gets progressively hotter, loses clock speed, and begins stuttering.
1. Put the laptop on a hard, open surface
This is the safest first fix. Move the laptop from a bed, blanket, couch, carpet, or lap to a desk or other hard, level surface. Fabric can obstruct bottom intakes and trap hot air. Keep the rear, sides, underside, and exhaust vents clear; do not push the exhaust against a wall or block it with books.

- Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. Please plug the cooling pad's USB cable into a 5V 1A adapter for best performance; otherwise, the fans may fail to spin or run at very low speed.
- Whisper-Quiet Operation: Enjoy a noise-free and interference-free environment with super quiet fans, allowing you to focus on your work or entertainment without distractions.
- Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
- Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
HP recommends approximately 6 inches (15.25 cm) of clearance around vents for its notebooks. Treat that as manufacturer guidance rather than a universal engineering requirement. Raising the rear slightly on a stable stand can improve intake airflow, but make sure the stand does not cover the vents.
Room conditions matter too. Charging, direct sunlight, nearby heat sources, and a warm room can increase fan activity. Microsoft gives temperatures above 25°C (77°F) as an example of an ambient condition that can increase fan behavior on Surface devices; it is not a universal gaming-laptop limit (Microsoft’s fan and power-mode guidance).
2. Clean the external vents safely
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect the charger and peripherals.
- Locate the intake and exhaust vents, including any vents near the display hinge.
- Use short bursts of canned air to remove visible dust from the external vents.
- Allow the laptop to cool before restarting and retesting.
Do not spray liquid or cleaning chemicals into the chassis. Do not use a high-pressure air compressor unless the manufacturer’s service instructions specifically permit it. ASUS warns that excessive pressure can damage fan blades (ASUS ROG’s overheating guidance). Canned air can clear external openings, but it may not remove dust packed into an internal heatsink.
HP says users generally do not need to open the laptop to clean the vents. If internal cleaning requires removing the bottom cover, follow the exact service manual for your model. Opening a warranty-covered laptop can create support complications, and careless work can damage clips, screws, fan cables, or other components.
3. Check for runaway background processes
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Windows Task Manager. Check the CPU, GPU, memory, and disk columns for an unexpected process using substantial resources.

Close unnecessary applications and browser tabs. Also check game launchers, cloud synchronization, downloads, Windows updates, recording software, overlays, and browser processes. Disable unnecessary startup applications if they repeatedly consume resources after booting. If CPU or GPU usage remains high while the laptop is idle, investigate stuck software and run a malware scan.
A new Windows installation may also be busy with updates, synchronization, indexing, and other background setup. Those tasks can temporarily increase fan activity. If the laptop is hot at idle for a prolonged period, however, do not dismiss it as normal without identifying the workload.
4. Test a quieter Windows or laptop profile
In Windows 11, open Start → Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode. Select Balanced or Recommended for a diagnostic test. Microsoft describes the trade-off: higher-performance modes can allow more performance at the cost of increased heat, power use, and fan noise.
Labels and behavior vary by Windows edition, firmware, battery state, and manufacturer software. Your laptop’s control panel may override or supplement Windows settings. Common manufacturer utilities include:
- ASUS: Armoury Crate or MyASUS.
- HP: OMEN Gaming Hub or HP Command Center, where supported.
- MSI: MSI Center → Features → User Scenario.
- Dell: Dell power or thermal-management tools, depending on the model.
- Lenovo: Lenovo Vantage or Legion Space, depending on generation.
- Acer: NitroSense or PredatorSense.
Start with Balanced, Recommended, or the manufacturer’s equivalent. Quiet or Silent modes generally reduce heat and noise but may reduce performance. Performance, Turbo, Extreme Performance, and Cooler Boost modes can increase fan speed and power limits. HP notes that its Performance Mode can run the CPU and GPU at high capacity and may reduce CPU utilization when a maximum temperature is reached. MSI likewise describes maximum fan modes as louder by design.

5. Reduce the game’s workload
Modern games can make a laptop work unnecessarily hard, particularly when frame rates are uncapped. Try these changes:
- Cap FPS near the display’s refresh rate or the frame rate you actually need.
- Use the game’s frame limiter, V-Sync, or a suitable graphics-driver limiter.
- Reduce ray tracing before lowering every other setting.
- Lower shadows, view distance, crowd density, and other expensive effects.
- Use an upscaling mode or lower the rendering resolution.
- Reduce the display refresh rate when maximum FPS is unnecessary.
- Test with overlays and recording tools disabled if one game behaves abnormally.
There is no universal temperature reduction from a particular FPS cap. The result depends on the game, hardware, display, and power profile. The goal is to stop the laptop rendering work that provides no practical benefit, not to force every game into the lowest possible settings.
6. Update the software that controls power and cooling
Check Windows Update, the laptop maker’s BIOS and firmware page, chipset and graphics drivers, OEM control software, and game patches. MSI and NVIDIA include BIOS and operating-system updates in overheating troubleshooting guidance.
Use the BIOS download for the exact model, not a similar-looking variant. Record the current BIOS version first. Keep the charger connected if the manufacturer requires it, and never interrupt a firmware update. A BIOS update may correct a power-management or fan-control problem, but it is not a guaranteed cure for dust, a failed fan, or degraded thermal hardware.

A simple stand can help because it raises the laptop and improves intake airflow. A powered cooling pad may help further, but its result depends on whether its fans line up with the laptop’s intakes, whether it blocks any vents, its airflow and noise, the laptop’s size, and the desk setup.

- 【Universal Compatibility】The light and portable laptop cooling pad works with most laptops up to 15.6 inch. Meet your needs when using laptop home or office for work.
A cooling pad cannot repair a blocked heatsink, failed fan, damaged heat pipe, or degraded thermal interface. If it makes no difference, the laptop’s intake may be elsewhere, the pad may not align with the vents, or the limiting component may be the CPU rather than airflow.
For example, Cooler Master lists the MasterNotepal for laptops up to 17 inches with two fans, approximately 15.42 CFM airflow, and approximately 27.24 dBA noise (official specifications). Its Notepal X3 lists adjustable fan speed and approximately 65–76.5 CFM airflow for laptops up to 17 inches (official specifications). These specifications do not guarantee a particular temperature reduction on your laptop. Elevating the rear on a stable, nonblocking stand is the low-cost option to try first.
Advanced tuning is optional, not the starting point
Power limiting, undervolting, and custom fan curves can reduce heat and noise, but they are hardware- and firmware-dependent. They can also reduce performance, cause instability, reset after updates, or complicate warranty troubleshooting. Some laptops lock these controls entirely.

When to stop troubleshooting and get service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional when:
- A fan does not spin when the laptop is clearly hot and the model’s fan-stop behavior does not explain it.
- The fan makes grinding, rattling, or growling noises.
- The laptop repeatedly crashes, restarts, freezes, or shuts down under load.
- Temperatures are unusually high during browsing or other light use.
- Performance declines progressively during a gaming session despite clear vents and reasonable settings.
- External cleaning, airflow changes, software checks, and updates produce no improvement.
- The laptop is under warranty or uses liquid-metal, vapor-chamber, or other unusual cooling hardware.
Some laptops intentionally stop their fans below an activation threshold, so a silent fan at idle is not automatically defective. But a fan that should be running and is not, especially alongside extreme heat or instability, is a service issue.
Repasting should be treated as a last-resort repair, not a routine upgrade. Removing the bottom cover can break clips, strip screws, damage fan cables, spill liquid metal, or create warranty disputes. Use the manufacturer’s service documentation or support channel before attempting it.
