A warm PS5 and a louder fan are not automatically signs of overheating. Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster during demanding games and applications. Treat an on-screen temperature warning, repeated shutdowns, instability, or continued abnormal behavior as a real problem.
Sony does not publish one universal consumer temperature limit for the PS5, so the console’s surface temperature is not a reliable diagnostic. Start with airflow, correct placement, and safe external cleaning. If warnings or shutdowns continue in an open, cool setup, stop experimenting and contact PlayStation Support.

1. Shut it down if you see a temperature warning
Do not keep playing until the PS5 shuts itself off. If the system still responds, save your game and exit normally. Then turn off the console, disconnect the AC power cable and other cables, and wait for it to cool before moving or cleaning it.

After cooling, relocate the PS5 to an open area, confirm that no vents are blocked, and restart only after correcting the setup. Avoid repeatedly pulling the power cable while the console is on, and never place ice packs, cold objects, or a household fan directly against the console.
The PS5 safety guide warns that the console can remain hot immediately after use and should be unplugged and allowed to cool before covers are removed or the unit is handled.
2. Give the PS5 at least 10 cm of open space
Place the console on a hard, stable surface with at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Keep the intake and exhaust paths clear, especially at the rear and around the sides.
- Do not push it close to a wall.
- Do not cover it with cloth or blankets.
- Avoid carpets and rugs with long fibers.
- Keep shelves from creating a heat pocket above the console.
- Prevent dust, pet hair, and lint from accumulating around the vents.
- Keep it away from radiators and other heating equipment.
An open-front TV cabinet is not automatically suitable. If its rear is closed, hot exhaust can remain trapped and circulate back into the console. The relevant test is whether air can move freely in and out and whether heat can escape the furniture.
For a quick diagnosis, place the PS5 temporarily on an open shelf or table in a cooler room. If the warning occurs only inside the cabinet, the cabinet’s airflow or ambient heat is the likely contributor.

3. Use the correct stand and orientation
Vertical placement does not inherently overheat every PS5. Sony supports both orientations, but the required hardware differs between generations.

- Original PS5: Use the base supplied for the model and follow its horizontal or vertical positioning instructions.
- PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro: Use the supplied horizontal feet for horizontal placement. Vertical placement requires the compatible official vertical stand, which is sold separately on newer models.
Never balance a console vertically without the appropriate stand. Also, do not assume that changing orientation will fix blocked vents or a hot cabinet. A correctly secured console can still overheat if its airflow is restricted.
Check the PS5 Slim instructions or the PS5 Pro safety guide for model-specific stand instructions. Do not treat internet claims about vertical use causing liquid-metal leaks as a general diagnosis; the cited official documentation does not establish that claim.
4. Clean the vents safely
Routine cleaning should begin with the accessible exterior, not a teardown.

- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Unplug the AC power cable from the rear.
- Let the console cool.
- Move it to a clean, stable work surface.
- Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner around the air vents and accessible dust-collection areas.
- Wipe the exterior with a dry, soft cloth.
- Reconnect the cables only after cleaning is finished.
This can remove dust near the vents and collection areas, but it does not guarantee that the heatsink, fan, or power-supply path is clear. Do not insert tools into the console, clean it while powered, or begin by removing the heatsink, power supply, or liquid-metal cooling system.

Compressed air is a third-party technique, not Sony’s preferred method in that guidance; used improperly, it can drive dust deeper, overspin a fan, or introduce moisture. If external cleaning does not resolve repeated warnings, professional service is safer than using a stronger tool.
A more invasive fan-cleaning procedure exists in iFixit’s repair guide, but opening the console adds risks including damaged connectors, static, stripped screws, and potential warranty complications.
5. Lower the environmental heat load
Even a functioning console has less cooling headroom in a hot or poorly ventilated room. Move the PS5 away from:
- Direct sunlight and windows that heat the console.
- Radiators, heaters, amplifiers, and other heat sources.
- Smoke, excessive dust, and unusually humid environments.
- Furniture that retains heat or blocks the rear exhaust.
Test the console in an open location rather than trying to cool it with an accessory. Warm exhaust is expected during operation; the aim is to stop that exhaust from being recirculated into the console.

6. Check accessories and an added M.2 SSD
These are edge cases, not the default explanation for a hot PS5. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and third-party cooling accessories while testing, but do not assume that an accessory caused the issue merely because the timing is unclear.
If the problem began after installing an M.2 SSD, check that its heat-dissipation parts are installed correctly, firmly attached, and the correct size for the drive. Newer PS5 safety material warns owners to check M.2 SSD heat-dissipation components when a high-temperature message appears. Because the available copy is a mirrored manual rather than Sony’s primary support domain, follow the exact SSD manufacturer’s installation instructions and your console’s model-specific manual.
A missing or detached heatsink can create a storage-related heat problem, but an M.2 SSD does not make every PS5 overheat.

Not as the first fix. A USB cooling stand cannot repair a blocked exhaust, internal dust, a failed fan, a damaged heatsink, a power problem, or an incorrectly installed SSD heatsink. It may be useful for organization, charging, or securing a compatible console vertically, but there is not enough evidence here to promise that an untested third-party fan lowers PS5 temperatures or prevents shutdowns.
If you need vertical placement on a compatible Slim or Pro model, buy the correct official stand rather than an unbranded stand that may not fit. If you need cleaning equipment, a low-powered vacuum aligns with Sony’s guidance. Avoid treating liquid-metal kits, thermal-paste kits, high-powered compressed-air equipment, and generic “turbo cooling” gadgets as routine maintenance.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Contact PlayStation Support or an appropriate repair provider if:
- The PS5 repeatedly displays a temperature warning.
- It shuts down during games after placement and accessible cleaning are corrected.
- The fan does not spin, grinds, or behaves erratically.
- The issue occurs in an open, cool setup with clean external vents.
- You smell burning, see liquid exposure or visible damage, or have an electrical concern.
- Fixing the problem would require removing the heatsink, working on the power supply, or replacing liquid metal.
- The console is still under warranty.
A shutdown is serious, but it does not prove overheating. Other possibilities include power delivery, less-accessible dust, an accessory, storage hardware, or a hardware defect. Conversely, a PS5 can feel relatively cool on the outside while still displaying a warning; surface feel is not a reliable measurement.
Before contacting support, record the model number, exact warning text, game or app involved, time until failure, placement, recent cleaning, any M.2 SSD installation, and whether the problem also occurs at the home screen. In the United States, Sony’s cited warranty information describes a one-year period for covered defects subject to its terms and exclusions, but the page is not a blanket promise that every overheating repair is covered. Check the current warranty and repair eligibility for your exact console through PlayStation’s repair and support route.

Do not diagnose overheating from warmth or fan noise alone. Respond to an actual warning by shutting down and letting the PS5 cool, then restore at least 10 cm of clearance, use the correct stand, clean accessible vents with a low-powered vacuum, and test it away from heat-trapping furniture. If warnings or shutdowns continue in that corrected setup, stop buying cooling gadgets and arrange official service.
