The Aether story features distinct incarnations—including Primis and Ultimis—and official Black Ops 4 material says their timelines converge. Some versions are antagonistic and cause harm, but the official summaries do not establish one moral verdict for every incarnation. The answer depends on which Richtofen and which point in the story you mean.
Why the version of Richtofen matters
“Richtofen” is not a single, unchanging role across the Zombies story. In official Black Ops 4 material, Primis and Ultimis appear together for the first time, with their timelines converging. Treyarch’s account of the story and its interview with the writing team both frame Aether as a layered saga involving those crews.
That distinction matters morally: judging a particular version’s role or choices in a particular story period is more precise than declaring every Richtofen evil. The official summaries establish broad story framing, not a complete account of every incarnation’s motives and actions.
What the Aether story does—and does not—establish
Treyarch describes the Primis crew as working toward a better future, and official coverage presents Black Ops 4 as bringing the Aether story to a conclusion. In its account of that ending, Treyarch says heroes in their various incarnations sacrificed themselves to collapse the multiverse and banish the evil they fought to the Dark Aether: Treyarch’s explanation of the ending.
#1 Best Overall
This identifies the heroes’ broad opposition to an evil threat; it does not erase or settle the morality of every earlier action by a particular Richtofen. Nor do the official summaries retrieved give a scene-by-scene moral ledger or label every Aether-era version evil. A categorical verdict would go beyond what those sources establish.
Black Ops 7’s Richtofen is described differently
Activision’s official Black Ops 7 Zombies character page uses explicitly negative language for that game’s Dr. Edward Richtofen: “Shaped by ambition and tainted by corruption, he masks his innate sadism and considerable ego behind quick wit and a charming smile.” That is a strong description of the character in the Black Ops 7 setting. It should not be treated as a verdict on every Aether-era incarnation, which belongs to a different story context.
How to judge a specific Richtofen
To answer whether a particular version is a villain, first name the incarnation and story period, then consider the actions the story actually shows. Primis, Ultimis, and the Black Ops 7 characterization should not be collapsed into one personality. Official promotional summaries are useful for broad framing, but they do not substitute for the relevant maps, dialogue, radios, and cutscenes when evaluating specific choices.
- Identify the version: Primis or Ultimis in the Aether story, or the Dr. Edward Richtofen described for Black Ops 7.
- Identify the period or action: a character’s role can differ across story moments, so judge the specific conduct in question.
- Keep the conclusion scoped: a negative portrayal in one setting does not prove that every version is evil.
Do you need to play the games to understand the answer?
No purchase is needed for the qualified answer above. If you want to follow the story directly, the official Black Ops II manual includes Richtofen in the Zombies credits, while Treyarch describes Zombies Chronicles as remastered maps from earlier saga chapters leading up to Black Ops III. These are optional ways into the story, not prerequisites for the distinction between versions.
