“The program can’t start because iscustom.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that iscustom.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is missing or corrupted, the safest fix is to repair the pcAnywhere installation that requested it.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what happened:
- The error names pcAnywhere or appears beside a pcAnywhere executable: repair or reinstall pcAnywhere from its original installer or licensed installation media.
- The problem started after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling anything.
- The file exists, but Windows says the specified module could not be found: a dependency, path, or architecture problem may be preventing it from loading.
- You moved the program, copied only its executable, or restored part of a backup: reinstall the complete application package in its intended location.
- You no longer need pcAnywhere: uninstall the legacy application instead of rebuilding its files.
- Several unrelated Windows applications are also failing: check Windows component health with DISM and SFC.
- The error comes from an unfamiliar executable: identify that executable first. A coincidentally named DLL requested by another program needs a different repair.
Do not begin by downloading iscustom.dll into System32 or SysWOW64. This is an application DLL associated with Symantec pcAnywhere, not a Windows system file.
What is iscustom.dll
iscustom.dll is identified in public file metadata as Install Custom DLL, associated with pcAnywhere and Symantec Corporation. The available metadata describes it as a Win32 DLL and lists a known build, but those details come from file catalogs rather than a current vendor file manifest. They should not be treated as a version list for every pcAnywhere release.
That distinction matters. A DLL with the correct filename can still be wrong for your pcAnywhere release, architecture, dependencies, or installation path. Do not mix a catalogued older file with a newer installation.

There is no evidence that iscustom.dll is supplied by Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Installing one of those packages does not normally restore pcAnywhere’s own DLL.
First, identify the program requesting the file
Before changing files, capture the complete error.
- Take a screenshot or copy the exact message.
- Note the executable named in the title bar or message.
- Find the executable’s full path if Windows provides it.
- Check whether the path belongs to pcAnywhere, a temporary installer directory, a network share, or another application.
- Note whether the issue began after uninstalling, updating, cleaning the disk, restoring a backup, or antivirus quarantine.
If the error says “Error loading iscustom.dll. The specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. In that case, repeatedly copying iscustom.dll will not solve the problem.
To inspect a program path:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click the affected executable, if it is running.
- Select Open file location.
- Record the folder and executable name.
You can also right-click a shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Target field.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall pcAnywhere
This is the most likely solution when pcAnywhere is the application that fails.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Try the installed repair option
- Save your work and close pcAnywhere.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for pcAnywhere.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or a similarly named option if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch pcAnywhere from its normal shortcut.
The exact repair option depends on how the legacy application was packaged. If repair completes successfully, the program should start without the missing-file message and the DLL should be restored inside the application’s installation directory.
If repair is not available
Use the original installer, licensed media, or an approved enterprise deployment package.
- Locate the installer for the same pcAnywhere release.
- If it is on removable media, connect the media.
- If it is on a network share, confirm that the share is available and trusted.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall pcAnywhere from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the installer again.
- Reboot after installation.
- Test the original shortcut.
Avoid removing installation folders manually before uninstalling. Manual deletion can leave registration data, services, shortcuts, or deployment records in an inconsistent state.
If the installer restores the file but pcAnywhere still will not run, record the new error. A missing DLL can expose a separate compatibility, permissions, dependency, or security problem.
Use the same release and complete package
Do not download a single replacement DLL from a random source and combine it with your installation. The correct package should restore the companion files and dependencies expected by that pcAnywhere release.
The catalogued 9.0.0.133 file is identified as 32-bit, but that does not establish that every pcAnywhere release used the same build or architecture. A 32-bit legacy application generally needs its 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
This tells you about Windows, not necessarily the application. To inspect an executable or DLL:
- Open the pcAnywhere installation folder.
- Right-click the executable.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Details and Compatibility tabs.
Do not assume that installing a 64-bit replacement fixes a 32-bit application.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the file. Do not immediately classify the detection as a false positive, especially with obsolete remote-access software.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
iscustom.dllor the pcAnywhere installation folder. - Expand the detection to view its path and detection name.
- Compare the path with the trusted pcAnywhere installation directory.
- Confirm that the original installer and publisher are trusted.
- Restore the file only if its provenance is clear and the security software provides that option.
If the file is repeatedly detected, do not disable antivirus just to force pcAnywhere to start. Obtain a clean installer, scan it, and consider retiring the software. An old remote-access product deserves particular caution because restoring one file does not make the entire application current or secure.
After restoring a quarantined file, launch pcAnywhere once. If the error returns, the file may be damaged, incompatible, or missing a dependency. Repair or reinstall the complete application instead.
Fix 3: Restore the complete application path
Copying only an executable or DLL between computers can break relative paths and dependencies.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Check whether the affected shortcut points to a location that still exists:
- Right-click the pcAnywhere shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target and Start in fields.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Confirm that the executable and its companion files are in the expected folder.
If the program was moved to another drive, restored from a partial backup, or launched from a temporary extraction folder, reinstall it from the complete package. Do not place iscustom.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 as a generic repair.
The application directory is normally the safest location for an application-specific DLL, but the definitive source is the installer for the exact pcAnywhere release.
Fix 4: Investigate a missing dependency
A message saying that a module could not be found can refer to a dependency of iscustom.dll, not necessarily to iscustom.dll itself.
First check whether the named file exists beside the application executable. If it does, do not overwrite it with an internet download. Instead:
- Run the pcAnywhere repair option again.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the complete package.
- Check Event Viewer for related application errors:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the faulting application, module, and exception details.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool only if you understand how to read its results.
- Restore missing dependencies through the original application installer.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL error appears. Microsoft’s Visual C++ packages are appropriate only when the exact error or dependency analysis identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime. If that evidence exists, use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and match the package architecture to the application.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 automatically
regsvr32 is intended for registering self-registering OLE or ActiveX DLLs. It is not a general-purpose repair command for application-support DLLs.

Do not run this by default:
regsvr32 iscustom.dll
A normal support DLL may not contain a DllRegisterServer entry point. An error such as “the specified module could not be found” or “entry point not found” does not prove that the file is missing, and registration will not repair a damaged installation or missing dependency.
Use regsvr32 only when the pcAnywhere installer or vendor documentation specifically identifies that particular DLL as a self-registering component. Microsoft explains the command’s scope and common errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when broader corruption exists
Because iscustom.dll is not a Windows component, SFC and DISM do not normally restore it. Use them when multiple unrelated Windows applications are failing or when Windows itself reports component corruption.
Install pending Windows updates and restart first. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test pcAnywhere again.
Microsoft says DISM repairs the Windows component store and SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command substitutes for reinstalling a third-party pcAnywhere DLL. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

A driver problem is not a normal cause of iscustom.dll missing errors. Do not use Device Manager as a substitute for repairing pcAnywhere.
Use it only if the same incident includes a device failure or a specific driver error:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not remove an unrelated device driver simply because pcAnywhere reports a DLL error. If a device-specific problem requires checking many hardware vendors and driver versions manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; installation is handled by the full version, and it will not replace the pcAnywhere repair path.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If iscustom.dll began failing immediately after an application, driver, or system change, System Restore may help when an appropriate restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove applications, drivers, and settings installed after the selected restore point. It does not replace a reliable pcAnywhere installer, so repair or reinstall the application if the error remains. Microsoft documents this process in its System Restore guidance.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Unverified DLL downloads can contain malware, belong to a different pcAnywhere release, use the wrong architecture, or omit the dependencies that caused the failure. A file that appears to fix the message may introduce a different crash or security problem.
Use the original pcAnywhere installer, licensed media, or an approved enterprise deployment source instead. If you no longer have trusted media, the safer choice may be to remove the obsolete application rather than reconstruct it from loose files.
Do not put the file in System32
System32 and SysWOW64 are not general storage locations for application DLLs. Placing a file there can create conflicts, permissions problems, and uncertainty about which copy Windows or the application is loading.
Do not use registry cleaners
A registry cleaner cannot recreate a missing DLL or restore the exact dependency set expected by pcAnywhere. Repair the owning application instead.
If pcAnywhere is no longer required
If the computer no longer needs pcAnywhere, uninstall it:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for pcAnywhere.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover shortcuts after confirming that no business process still depends on the software.
pcAnywhere is legacy software, and older branches have been identified by its vendor as unsupported. A successful reinstall does not guarantee stability or security on a current Windows release. If remote access is still needed, plan a supported replacement rather than preserving an obsolete installation indefinitely.
FAQ
Is iscustom.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available evidence associates it with Symantec pcAnywhere. It should not normally be downloaded into System32 or SysWOW64.
Does Microsoft Visual C++ install iscustom.dll?
No evidence establishes that iscustom.dll belongs to a Microsoft runtime. Install a Visual C++ package only when a separate dependency check identifies that runtime.
Should I register iscustom.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering OLE or ActiveX DLLs, not every application-support DLL. Registration does not repair a missing file or dependency.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The file exists. Why does Windows still say it is missing?
The application may be loading from another directory, or a dependency of iscustom.dll may be unavailable. Repair the complete pcAnywhere installation and inspect the exact executable path.
Can I use a DLL from another pcAnywhere computer?
Only if it came from the exact same release and trusted installation package, and even then replacing one file may not restore its dependencies. Reinstalling the complete package is safer.
What if only one Windows account has the problem?
After confirming the installation path and permissions, test pcAnywhere under a separate administrative test account. A successful test can point to profile or permission damage rather than a missing application file.
What information should I record if reinstalling fails?
Record the exact error, requesting executable and full path, Windows version and architecture, pcAnywhere release, whether the file exists beside the executable, any antivirus action, and the relevant Event Viewer entry. That information will distinguish a missing file from a dependency or compatibility problem.
