When a website will not let you sign in—or will not let you stay signed out—the quickest safe fix is usually not to clear everything. First compare the failure in a clean session; then remove data for only the affected site if that comparison points to your normal browser.
Browser sign-in trouble is often fixable without resetting everything—but it is not always a browser problem. A failed login, redirect loop, repeated sign-out, or sign-out that appears not to work can be caused by the site’s session data, a privacy or extension setting, the sign-in provider, a work identity system, your network, or an outage. The safest approach is to compare first, then remove only the affected site’s data if the comparison points to your regular browser.

Start by identifying the exact symptom
Before changing settings, write down the information that will make the next test meaningful:
- The exact website address and the precise error or loop you see
- Whether it fails while signing in, staying signed in, or signing out
- Your browser, operating system, and whether the browser is managed by work or school
- The sign-in route you chose: password, Google, Microsoft, Apple, or company single sign-on (SSO)
- Whether it happens on another device or trusted network
- The date, time, and time zone
Never include a password, one-time code, recovery answer, cookie value, session token, or unredacted diagnostic capture in a screenshot or support request.

Use this order: isolate first, reset second
1. Check whether the service is having an incident
Look for the affected provider’s official status page before cleaning your browser. Login and access incidents do happen, and a provider-side problem can resolve without any change on your device. If other people are seeing the same failure, this is especially important. For an example of the kind of status history to look for, see OpenAI Status History.
If the provider reports an incident, avoid spending time reinstalling or resetting browsers. Follow its updates and retry when the incident is resolved.
2. Run one clean comparison
Open a private or incognito window, visit the service directly, and try the normal sign-in flow. If practical, make one additional comparison in another current browser or on another trusted network.
This is a diagnostic comparison, not a cure and not proof that your everyday browser is broken. For example, Chrome Incognito uses a separate session and discards that session’s site data when all Incognito windows close, but it also blocks third-party cookies by default. A different result may therefore reflect clean stored data, a different cookie policy, or both. Private browsing also does not hide your activity from the website, employer or school, or internet provider. See Google’s Incognito guidance.
| What the comparison shows | Most useful next move |
|---|---|
| It fails in the private window and another browser or network | Check service status, the correct account/sign-in route, account restrictions, and network or provider support. |
| It works privately but fails in the normal browser | Test extensions briefly, then clear data for only that site. |
| It changes only when you switch networks | Consider VPN, proxy, captive-portal, DNS/security-filter, or managed-network interference. Report managed-network results to IT. |
| It changes only with the sign-in method | Use the method originally associated with the account; check SSO, invitation, or provisioning with the organization. |
3. Confirm you are using the account’s original sign-in route
A site may treat “Continue with Google,” “Continue with Microsoft,” Apple sign-in, a password login, and organization SSO as distinct identity routes. Using a different route can create or open a different account, even when the email address looks similar.
Use the method you originally used to create or access the account. For work accounts, verify the intended work email, that an invitation was accepted, and that the account has been provisioned. SAML, invitation, and corporate SSO failures normally require an administrator to check the identity-provider configuration—not a user to loosen browser security. This distinction is reflected in OpenAI’s current ChatGPT login help, which directs organization SSO issues to the organization’s administrator.

4. Test extensions and network tools reversibly
Extensions can read or change data on sites where they have permission. Content blockers, privacy and script blockers, security filters, translation tools, and password-manager autofill can sometimes disrupt a legitimate redirect or verification handoff. Temporarily disable the suspected extension or remove its access to the affected site, retry once, and immediately restore it if it was not the cause. Chrome documents extension site access in its extension management guidance; Firefox’s Troubleshoot Mode is designed to disable extensions temporarily for diagnosis.
Likewise, if policy permits, briefly disconnect a personal VPN or proxy and compare a trusted network. Do not bypass a workplace or school security policy. On a managed device, tell IT exactly which comparison changed the result; that is far more useful than saying that “the login is broken.”
5. Clear data for only the affected site
If the clean comparison works and your regular browser does not, remove cookies and site data for the one affected service, then restart its login flow. This signs you out of that service and may remove its saved preferences. It is deliberately narrower than clearing all browsing data, which can sign you out of many unrelated sites and erase useful settings.
At the time of writing, these desktop-browser routes support selected-site removal:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies → See all site data and permissions. Search for the affected website and delete its data. Google documents the route and warns that deleting cookies can sign you out and remove preferences in Delete, allow and manage cookies in Chrome.
- Firefox: use the address-bar site control to clear the current site’s cookies/data, or open Settings → Privacy & Security and use the site-data management control to find and remove one website. Mozilla’s current instructions are in Clear cookies and site data in Firefox.
- Safari on macOS: Safari → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data. Select the affected site and choose Remove. Apple notes that removing website data can sign you out or change how a site behaves; see Manage cookies and website data in Safari on Mac.
Browser labels can change. For mobile browsers, Microsoft Edge, or a different operating-system release, use the browser vendor’s current help page rather than following an unverified desktop path.
Choose the next action by symptom
| Symptom | Try first | Do not jump to |
|---|---|---|
| The login button does nothing; verification or redirect repeats | Private-window comparison; brief extension isolation; trusted-network comparison; confirm the original sign-in route. | Globally allowing third-party cookies or permanently disabling privacy/security extensions. |
| Sign-in works privately but not in the usual browser | Targeted site-data removal after testing extensions. | Assuming private mode has the same cookie behavior or makes you anonymous. |
| The service asks you to sign in repeatedly | Check whether the browser clears cookies on exit and whether the site has a specific cookie/data rule; compare a fresh profile. | Clearing all browsing data as the first response. |
| “Sign out” seems to do nothing | Close other tabs for the service, revisit it, and remove that site’s data if necessary. Use the service’s active-session controls if it offers them. | Assuming one tab proves every device or session was signed out. |
| Work SSO, invitation, or SAML fails | Confirm the work email, invite, and provisioning with IT; report whether another browser/network changes the result. | Bypassing managed-browser, VPN, or identity-provider controls. |
| Many people see the same failure | Check the provider’s official status page. | Reinstalling or resetting the browser before ruling out an outage. |
Why cookies and privacy settings can affect sign-in
Most websites keep an authenticated session with HTTP cookies. A cookie can be limited by its domain and path and protected with attributes such as Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite. Those controls help decide where the browser sends the session state and how it is protected; a stale site record, blocked cookie, or service-side decision can all produce a login symptom. That is why “bad cookies” is not a complete diagnosis. See MDN’s guide to HTTP cookies.

Some sign-ins legitimately move between the site you are visiting and an identity provider on another domain. An embedded sign-in widget or redirect may need state from that identity domain. Third-party-cookie restrictions and SameSite behavior can interrupt that handoff. MDN explains the cross-site context in Third-party cookies.
That does not mean you should permanently allow third-party cookies everywhere. Use the smallest reversible test needed to identify the conflict, restore your protections, and then keep the targeted remedy—such as removing stale data for that service or changing one extension’s site access.
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Contact the service’s support team or follow its account-recovery process when the issue reproduces in clean comparisons, the account is locked or suspended, you have lost access to the recovery email, or the site reports suspicious activity. For persistent ChatGPT login cases, OpenAI may ask for a HAR file that reproduces the problem; collect and share diagnostics only when the service specifically requests them, and redact or avoid sensitive data. Its login support article describes its current escalation approach.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For site owners: what to investigate
This section is for the people operating the site, not ordinary visitors. Reproduce in a clean browser profile and inspect the redirect chain and response headers. Confirm that the expected session cookie is set and that its Domain, Path, Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite attributes fit the authentication design. Cross-site identity flows need particular care because browser third-party-cookie controls can affect them.
If the problem disappears only in an extension-free session, account for extension or network interference rather than telling users to weaken protections permanently. If it is limited to corporate SSO, validate identity-provider logs, invitation/provisioning state, permitted redirect URIs, and organizational network policy. One user report is evidence to investigate, not proof of an application bug.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a site work in a private window but not normally?
It is a useful comparison, not a guarantee of cause. Private windows use a separate session, but Chrome also blocks third-party cookies there by default. A change can be caused by clean stored data, a different cookie policy, or both.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why do I still look logged in after selecting Sign out?
Not by itself. Closing one tab may leave other tabs, browser profiles, devices, or active sessions intact. Close the service’s other tabs, revisit it, remove that site’s local data if needed, and use the service’s active-session controls when available.
Should I disable my ad blocker, VPN, or cookie protection to log in?
No. Test only the smallest reversible change, then restore the setting. A VPN, proxy, content blocker, privacy extension, or managed network can be a useful diagnostic variable, but permanently disabling protection is rarely the right fix.
What if I signed up with Google but the site is asking for a password?
Use the exact route associated with the account: password, Google, Microsoft, Apple, or organization SSO. Different routes can open different accounts. For company accounts, ask IT to verify the invitation, provisioning, and identity-provider setup.
Where is the selected-site data control on my mobile browser?
Use the browser vendor’s current support documentation. Mobile and version-specific menus change often, so a desktop path is not reliable guidance for every phone or browser release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Make one clean comparison, preserve your browser protections, and clear only the affected site’s data when the evidence points there. If the failure crosses browsers or networks—or involves a locked account, suspicious activity, or work SSO—escalate it to the service or your administrator.
