Balatro turns poker hands into a compact roguelike. You build scores to beat Boss Blinds, then change the rules with Jokers, discards and other choices. The appeal is not simply getting a good hand: it is learning how card values, multipliers and unusual Joker effects can work together. Campaign and challenge modes give the game more structure beyond a single run.
Its touch-adapted design makes it a natural fit for a quick session, while controller support gives players another option. The US iPhone listing shows a $9.99 purchase price and requires iOS 13.5 or later.
Important caveat: Balatro is a score-and-synergy game. It is a strong match for players who like discovering interactions, but not necessarily for someone seeking a story-led adventure or fast reflex action. Search the US App Store for Balatro.

2. Stardew Valley — best for a long, one-purchase farming RPG
Choose it if: You want a slow-burn solo game with many things to do rather than a session-based score chase.
Stardew Valley starts with farm restoration, but its scope extends to relationships, festivals, fishing, foraging, cave exploration and building a routine around the town. The iPhone version lists more than 50 hours of gameplay content and includes mobile-specific conveniences such as autosave, tool auto-select and auto-attack.
The clear financial advantage is its straightforward model: the US listing is $4.99 and says there are no in-app purchases.
Important caveat: The iOS listing says multiplayer functionality is not supported. Treat this as a single-player choice on iPhone, even if you know the game from another platform. Search the US App Store for Stardew Valley.

3. Slay the Spire — best for tactical deckbuilding
Choose it if: You want to plan a deck several fights ahead and weigh route risk against possible rewards.
Slay the Spire is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder built around changing runs. You choose cards, acquire relics and decide which paths through the Spire to take. Those decisions matter because a useful card or relic now may also shape what your deck needs later. It is the more deliberate card-game recommendation here, whereas Balatro centers poker-style scoring and rule-changing Jokers.
The standard iPhone edition is a $9.99 paid game and requires iOS 12 or later.
Important caveat: Do not confuse the paid edition with Slay the Spire+. The “+” title is a separately listed Apple Arcade edition; its listing says save progress can transfer to it. Apple Arcade games are included with an Apple Arcade subscription, not free games. Search the US App Store for Slay the Spire.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Vampire Survivors — best for immediate survival-action loops
Choose it if: You want a direct, repeatable game: move, survive escalating swarms, collect upgrades, and begin another run.
Vampire Survivors is a roguelite survival game with intentionally minimal controls. Its momentum comes from choosing upgrades between runs and watching those choices help you withstand ever-larger enemy groups. It also stands out among these picks for listing 1–4 player local couch co-op in landscape orientation.
The standard iPhone/iPad game is free with in-app purchases.

Important caveat: “Free with in-app purchases” is the relevant disclosure; it does not mean that every add-on is included. There is also a distinct Apple Arcade “+” edition, which should not be treated as the same access model as the standard release. Search the US App Store for Vampire Survivors.
5. Call of Duty: Mobile — best for competitive multiplayer
Choose it if: Your priority is online competition rather than a self-contained solo purchase.
Call of Duty: Mobile offers multiplayer modes, battle royale, ranked and social play, monthly seasonal content, and controller support according to its iPhone listing. That makes it the obvious pick in this list for players who want an active competitive shooter on a phone.
It is free with in-app purchases, requires iOS 15 or later, and is rated 18+ on the US listing. The displayed base app size is 2.8 GB; the game also lets players choose additional downloads such as HD resources, maps, weapons and operators.
Important caveat: An internet connection is required. Also, do not assume the displayed base size is the final installed size after optional downloads. Search the US App Store for Call of Duty: Mobile.

Monument Valley 3 asks you to guide Noor through shifting architecture and tides. Its puzzles use perspective, gravity and impossible-looking structures as the central mechanic. The result is a focused puzzle adventure, making it a useful counterpoint to the list’s sprawling RPGs and endlessly repeatable roguelikes.
The access model is especially worth stating precisely: the first two chapters are free, then one in-app purchase unlocks the full game and The Garden of Life expansion. The listing describes the game as free to start with no ads.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Arknights: Endfield — best for a free-to-start RPG with building systems
Choose it if: You want an RPG where exploration and combat sit alongside gathering resources and designing production lines.
Arknights: Endfield is the list’s most systems-driven free-to-start RPG recommendation. Its App Store description combines frontier exploration and combat with the AIC Factory, a production-line building layer for processing and managing resources. That factory component is the reason to choose it over a conventional action RPG.
The US listing is free with in-app purchases, including random items. It requires iOS 15 or later, lists a 3.6 GB app size, and carries a 13+ age rating.

8. Genshin Impact — best for a large ongoing open-world RPG
Choose it if: You are willing to commit time, device space and attention to a large live-service world.
Genshin Impact is the expansive option. Its iPhone listing describes exploring Teyvat, using elemental energy in combat, assembling a character party and traveling across an open world. It is a sensible choice for readers who want a long-running free-to-start RPG rather than a compact, finishable purchase.
The game is free with optional in-game purchases, including random virtual items. Its compatibility guidance is unusually important: the stated minimum is an A11 chip with 3 GB RAM and 40 GB of available storage. The recommended specification is an iPhone 12/A13 chip, 4 GB RAM and 60 GB of available storage.
Important caveat: Check your device capability and free storage before downloading. Those figures are available-storage guidance from the listing, not a promise of the final installed footprint in every configuration. Search the US App Store for Genshin Impact.
How to pick without regretting the download
- Set your budget first. For a one-time purchase, start with Stardew Valley, Balatro or the standard Slay the Spire. For a free-to-start game, read the in-app-purchase disclosure before treating it as cost-free.
- Match the game to your session length. Balatro and Vampire Survivors suit repeatable runs; Stardew Valley and Genshin Impact invite a longer-term routine; Monument Valley 3 is the focused puzzle choice.
- Check practical constraints before installing. Call of Duty: Mobile needs an internet connection. Endfield requires iOS 15+ and lists 3.6 GB. Genshin Impact has particularly high available-storage guidance.
- Keep subscription access distinct from ownership. Apple Arcade “+” editions are subscription-included versions, not the same thing as a standard paid purchase or a universally free download.
