Italian YouTuber Francesco Salicini, who posts as Once Were Nerd, said police searched his family home on April 15, 2025, and seized more than 30 consoles and his phone. News reports linked the investigation to handhelds allegedly supplied with copyrighted game files and questions about whether his videos promoted their circulation. The available reporting establishes neither a conviction nor a sentence.
Why were the retro gaming handhelds seized?
In a July 17, 2025 report, PC Gamer reported Salicini’s account: authorities began a search at his mother’s home on April 15, and he said he cooperated and that more than 30 consoles and his phone were taken. Salicini reportedly believed the matter involved consoles supplied with microSD cards containing games. These details are attributed to his account; the report does not independently establish an official inventory or confirm the contents of every seized device.
Contemporaneous coverage connected the inquiry with allegations about promotion or circulation of copyrighted game files. That is different from an allegation that retro gaming discussion, hardware reviews or emulation by themselves are crimes. la Repubblica’s July 21, 2025 report made that distinction and observed that most ROMs distributed online remain protected by copyright; this is the newspaper’s characterization, not a court finding about Salicini’s case.
Is Salicini actually facing a prison sentence?
No sentence is established in the reports cited here. Corriere della Sera reported that Salicini said he had been reported to Italy’s Guardia di Finanza and could face six months to three years in prison and a fine of up to €15,000. Those figures describe reported potential exposure, not a finding of guilt or punishment imposed on him.
