Before replacing anything, identify which program or startup entry is requesting iusb3mon.dll, then repair the package that installed it.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Check these details before applying fixes:
- Does the message appear during startup, after login, or only when launching one application?
- Does the dialog name
iusb3mon.exe, an Intel USB component, or another program? - Did the issue begin after a Windows update, driver update, uninstall, cleanup, or antivirus alert?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is
iusb3mon.dllpresent somewhere on the drive? - Does the local file have an Intel digital signature?
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because iusb3mon.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because iusb3mon.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting iusb3mon.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading iusb3mon.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “iusb3mon.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The file iusb3mon.dll is missing or corrupted.”
The wording helps classify the failure, but the repair is usually the same: restore or remove the old Intel USB package cleanly.

What iusb3mon.dll belongs to
iusb3mon.dll is associated with Intel(R) USB 3.0 Monitor, a legacy component distributed with Intel’s USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver package. Its usual companion executable is iusb3mon.exe.
This is not a normal Windows inbox DLL. Modern Windows provides its own USB 3.x host-driver stack, including Usbxhci.sys, and Microsoft’s USB architecture documentation does not list iusb3mon.dll as part of that built-in stack.

That distinction matters. A missing file generally means an Intel or computer-manufacturer driver package is incomplete, damaged, obsolete, or partially removed. It does not usually mean that Windows needs a random copy placed in C:WindowsSystem32.
The monitor component may also be nonessential to basic USB operation. USB keyboards, storage devices, and other peripherals can continue working while a leftover startup entry still displays an error.
Fix 1: Find the file and the program requesting it
First determine whether the DLL exists and where it is located.

- Press Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
where /r C: iusb3mon.dll
If Windows finds the file, note its complete path.
Use PowerShell instead
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run:
Get-ChildItem -Path C: -Filter iusb3mon.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
A legitimate legacy installation may use a folder beneath:
C:Program FilesIntelIntel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller DriverApplication
That location is not guaranteed. The installer and computer manufacturer determine the actual path.
Inspect the file
Right-click the file and select Properties. Check:
- Details for product and publisher information.
- Digital Signatures for a valid Intel signature.
- General for the exact location and file size.
- Open with or related information to see whether it belongs beside an Intel executable.
Treat a copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, an archive extracted from the web, or an unfamiliar application directory as suspicious. A familiar filename does not prove that the file is genuine.
If the error appears only when launching one program, the requesting program may have bundled or retained an Intel component. If it appears at every reboot, inspect Settings → Apps → Startup and Task Manager → Startup apps for an Intel USB monitor entry.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the OEM Intel USB package
This is the most likely and safest repair.
Use the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support page first. OEM systems can require customized chipset and USB packages, so a generic package with a matching filename is not necessarily correct.

- Identify the computer model or motherboard model.
- Visit the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Search using the exact model or service tag.
- Open the Drivers, Downloads, or Support section.
- Select the installed Windows version and system architecture.
- Look under Chipset, USB, or Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.
- Download the matching package.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Restart Windows.
If the manufacturer no longer offers the package, use Intel’s official support channels for its legacy USB 3.0 Host Controller software. Do not choose a package solely because it contains iusb3mon.dll.
Repair an existing installation
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Intel USB 3.0, Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller, or a vendor-branded chipset package.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- Try Repair first.
- Restart when prompted.
On older Windows versions:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Locate the Intel USB or chipset package.
- Select Repair if available.
If repair is unavailable, uninstall only the clearly identified old package, restart, and install the correct OEM replacement. Do not remove every USB controller or chipset entry simply because the error mentions USB.
A successful repair normally removes the startup dialog and leaves Device Manager without an error symbol. USB devices should continue to work normally.
Fix 3: Update Windows and optional drivers
Windows Update may provide a compatible driver, but it is not guaranteed to restore this specific legacy monitor DLL.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install applicable chipset or USB updates.
- Restart.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select View optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install the relevant update.
- Restart.

Manually hunting through old driver pages and comparing several chipset packages can be time-consuming, especially when the wrong package silently leaves the startup error in place. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its repair and driver installation features require the full version, and reinstalling the correct OEM package remains the definitive fix for this Intel component.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software may have quarantined the DLL or its companion executable. This is especially relevant if the error began immediately after a security update or antivirus detection.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for
iusb3mon.dlloriusb3mon.exe. - Expand the detection to view its original path and action.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm:
- The original path belongs to the Intel or OEM package.
- The file has a valid digital signature.
- The companion executable is also legitimate.
- A security scan does not continue to identify the file.
Reinstalling the signed OEM package is safer than restoring an isolated DLL. If the file was located in a suspicious directory or repeatedly detected, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. The filename can be abused in DLL side-loading, so iusb3mon.dll is not automatically safe merely because it resembles a genuine Intel component.

Fix 5: Remove a stale startup reference
An incomplete uninstall can remove the DLL while leaving a startup entry that still calls iusb3mon.exe.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an Intel USB monitor or an entry connected to the error.
- Right-click the clearly identified stale entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart.
Disabling the entry should stop the startup dialog, but it does not repair the underlying package. If the computer still needs the old Intel software, reinstall the matching driver first.

- Press Start.
- Search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch at logon or startup.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before changing it.
- Disable only a task that clearly points to the obsolete Intel monitor.
- Restart and test.
Do not delete arbitrary registry values or scheduled tasks based only on a similar name.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update reports corruption, or system files have been damaged. They are not the primary fix for a missing third-party Intel DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses. See the Microsoft System File Checker instructions.
Outbyte PC Repair can show system problems without repeatedly guessing which repair changed anything; its scan is available before the repair features, which require the full version. For this file, however, repairing or reinstalling the Intel/OEM package remains necessary when Windows itself is healthy.

If SFC reports that no integrity violations were found, that does not disprove an Intel-package problem. SFC checks protected Windows files and may not restore a third-party monitor DLL.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began directly after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup utility, or other system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Complete the process and restart.
Microsoft says System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files unchanged. Instructions are available in Microsoft’s System Restore guide.

Why downloading the DLL or using regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not download iusb3mon.dll from a random DLL website. That approach can provide:
- Malware or a deliberately modified file.
- The wrong version for the installed package.
- The wrong architecture.
- A file missing required companion components.
- A replacement that leaves the broken startup entry untouched.
Do not copy a random DLL into System32 or SysWOW64. The correct installation folder depends on the original package.
regsvr32 also normally does not apply. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that iusb3mon.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 iusb3mon.dll
It may produce a missing-entry-point message or an architecture mismatch error. Repair or reinstall the complete package instead.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Do not infer the required architecture from a download page or from one public file sample. Public metadata commonly identifies an x86 sample, but that does not establish a universal architecture for every Intel release.
Use the architecture supplied by the original installer:
- Open Settings → System → About.
- Check System type.
- Confirm the application’s own architecture if the error occurs only with one program.
- Install the OEM package intended for that Windows installation.
- Do not copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit program folder, or the reverse.
A complete installer selects the correct files and dependencies more reliably than manual replacement.

FAQ
Is iusb3mon.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Intel’s legacy USB 3.0 Monitor and is not identified as part of the modern Windows inbox USB stack.

There is no supported evidence for that association. Installing Visual C++ Redistributables is relevant only when the error names runtime files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.
Can I keep using USB if the error appears?
Often, yes. The monitor may be ancillary while the core USB driver continues operating.
Should I register iusb3mon.dll?
Normally, no. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command, and this file has not been verified as a self-registering component.
What if reinstalling the driver does not help?
Identify the exact executable in the error, then check Startup apps, Task Scheduler, Event Viewer, and Reliability Monitor. Another application may be requesting its own missing copy.
