mlfoundation.dll is an Adobe application DLL, not a Windows system file. It is associated with Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Media Encoder, and some Adobe Elements installations, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Adobe program that is reporting the error.
Do not download mlfoundation.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. Adobe applications use application-specific files, and a DLL from another Adobe release may have the wrong version, architecture, or dependencies.

That means reinstalling the affected Adobe application restores the file with the other matching program files.
- Save your Adobe project work and close Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, Photoshop Elements, and other Adobe applications.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application from the Start menu.
- Select Apps.
- Find the Adobe application that fails to start.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall and confirm.
- Restart Windows again if Creative Cloud requests it.
- Open Creative Cloud, return to Apps, and select Install beside the affected application.
- Launch the application after the installation completes.
If the error names Media Encoder but you normally open Premiere Pro, reinstall Media Encoder as well. Premiere Pro can invoke Media Encoder during export, and a damaged installation of either application can interrupt that process.
How to confirm the repair worked
The repair worked if the Adobe application opens without the DLL message and reaches its normal start screen. Test the operation that previously failed, such as opening a project, importing media, or sending a sequence to Media Encoder.

If the error remains, do not copy a replacement DLL into a Windows folder. Continue with the checks below.
Fix 2: Identify the application and verify the file path
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
The error dialog may identify the program that requested the DLL. If it does not, use the application path and Windows event information to identify the owner.
- Right-click the shortcut for the program that fails.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field. It should point to an Adobe executable if this is an Adobe-related failure.
- Select Open File Location.
- Check whether the folder belongs to Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, Photoshop Elements, or another Adobe installation.
- If
MLFoundation.dllexists in that folder, right-click it and choose Properties. - Review the Digital Signatures tab when it is available. A genuine installation should come from the Adobe installation and should not have been copied from an unrelated source.
The file should normally remain beside the Adobe application binaries. It should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Several Adobe versions can coexist, with each installation having its own copy. Do not replace the copy used by one release with a copy from another release. The DLL’s version must match the exact Adobe product and build that is launching.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file after an Adobe update, even when the file belongs to a legitimate installation. Quarantine alone does not prove that the DLL is malware.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
mlfoundation.dll. - Expand the event and note the file path.
- If the path is inside the genuine Adobe installation, verify the installation and publisher before taking action.
- Restore the file only if you are confident that the path and Adobe installation are legitimate.
- If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the Adobe application through Creative Cloud instead.
- Run a full security scan before restoring a suspicious file.
If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or detection-history screen and perform the same path check. After reinstalling Adobe, update the security software and report a possible false positive to its vendor if the legitimate file is removed again.
Fix 4: Repair Creative Cloud, then reinstall the app
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
A failed Creative Cloud update can replace part of an Adobe application while leaving the installation incomplete.
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Open the account or Help menu.
- Choose the option to uninstall or repair Creative Cloud.
- Select Repair first when that option is offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud and reinstall the affected Adobe application.
If repair fails, uninstall Creative Cloud, restart Windows, then install the current Creative Cloud desktop application from Adobe’s official website. Reinstall the Adobe application afterward.

Fix 5: Check for a separate Microsoft Visual C++ error
Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus download time.
Do not assume that mlfoundation.dll is a Microsoft runtime file. Install or repair Visual C++ only when the complete error also names a dependency such as:
Rank #3
MSVCP*.dllMSVCR*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dll
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Read the error carefully and record the missing runtime filename.
- Download the Microsoft package matching the Adobe application architecture.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if the package is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Adobe again.
Modern Adobe software generally uses 64-bit components, but 64-bit Windows can also run 32-bit applications. The redistributable architecture must match the application that needs it. Installing a runtime without a matching dependency error is unlikely to restore an Adobe application DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes.
Use this step when several Windows applications show corruption symptoms, Windows features are failing, or the Adobe error began alongside broader system problems. These commands repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party Adobe DLL in an Adobe program folder.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Test the Adobe application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not repair everything, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat the commands once. If only Adobe fails, return to Creative Cloud repair rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the Adobe application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Adobe.

Fix 7: Update a graphics driver if Adobe crashes during media work
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
If Adobe opens normally but crashes while importing media, previewing a project, or exporting, the issue may be a graphics driver, plug-in, codec, project, or media file rather than a missing mlfoundation.dll.
First test whether the failure occurs only with one project or file. Then check the graphics driver:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Adobe with a new empty project.
If Device Manager finds nothing, obtain the driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer. Do not remove a working driver unless you have a replacement ready.
Rank #4
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is completed by the full version. A driver update is only relevant when the Adobe failure occurs during graphics or media processing, not when the application simply reports a missing DLL.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
An ordinary Adobe runtime DLL is loaded by the Adobe application from its installation folder. Registering it does not restore a deleted file, fix a mismatched Adobe build, or install its dependencies. Running commands such as these can produce another error without solving the original problem:
regsvr32 mlfoundation.dll
regsvr32 C:PathTomlfoundation.dll
Use regsvr32 only when official software instructions specifically identify a self-registering component. It is not the normal repair for mlfoundation.dll.
Other recovery options
System Restore
Use System Restore only when the problem clearly began after a recent software or system change and a current Adobe installer is unavailable.

Windows Features
Windows Media Foundation and mlfoundation.dll are not the same component. Similar names do not establish a relationship. Do not enable or disable Windows Media Features as a substitute for repairing Adobe.
You can check optional Windows components if other media applications are failing:
Best Value
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select More Windows features.
- Review the available media-related features.
- Change them only when a separate application specifically requires it.
Changing Windows Features will not normally recreate an Adobe DLL.
Common causes of the error
| Likely cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Incomplete Adobe installation | Reinstall the affected Adobe application |
| Interrupted Creative Cloud update | Repair Creative Cloud, then reinstall the app |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the path, then restore cautiously or reinstall Adobe |
| Wrong Adobe version or architecture | Install the matching application release |
| Missing Visual C++ dependency | Repair the Microsoft runtime named in the error |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Driver, plug-in, codec, or media problem | Update the relevant component and test a new project |
| Malware or disk failure | Scan and check the drive before reinstalling Adobe |
FAQ
Is mlfoundation.dll part of Windows?
No. Available Adobe evidence places it in Adobe application directories, not in the normal Windows system directories.
Is it Microsoft Media Foundation?
No. MLFoundation.dll is an Adobe application file. Its name should not be confused with Microsoft Media Foundation.
Which Adobe applications use it?
Public Adobe evidence documents it with Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and at least some Adobe Elements installations. The exact application depends on the installation that contains the file.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. A standalone download may contain malware or the wrong version and architecture. It may also leave the rest of the Adobe installation damaged. Reinstall the owning Adobe application through Creative Cloud.

That wording usually indicates that Windows could not load the file or one of its dependencies. The file may be corrupted, mismatched, incomplete, or accompanied by another missing runtime. Reinstall Adobe and check whether the full message names another DLL.
Can SFC restore mlfoundation.dll?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while mlfoundation.dll belongs to an Adobe installation.
What if reinstalling Adobe does not work?
Check the exact path in the error, antivirus history, Windows Event Viewer, Adobe crash logs, and the complete dependency message. If the DLL is present but Adobe still crashes while loading media, investigate the graphics driver, plug-ins, codecs, project, or media file. If there are wider Windows symptoms, complete the DISM and SFC repair steps, then reinstall Adobe again.
