Switch 2 is a good example of why: it is unmistakably a successor to the original Switch, but the way Nintendo carried that idea forward was not simply a matter of making the old system faster or bigger.
Switch 2 is both a continuation and a reset
Nintendo announced Switch 2 in January 2025 as the successor to Switch. That description sounds straightforward, but it contains a tension: the new console runs Switch games while also supporting games made specifically for Switch 2. It preserves a library and a familiar hybrid-console idea, yet gives developers a new hardware baseline.

Nintendo’s developers said they considered names including “Super Nintendo Switch.” They settled on “Nintendo Switch 2” in part because the new system could play Switch games, while the Super NES could not play NES games. Developer Kawamoto said the name was chosen “in the hope that it becomes the new standard for Nintendo Switch.” That is a concrete design intention, not proof that Nintendo’s next move was obvious.
The company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, described it at the US launch announcement as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch.” The phrase captures the continuity, but the hardware shows how much interpretation sits inside the word “next.”

What makes Switch 2 different from the original Switch?
Nintendo’s specifications point to meaningful changes across the screen, storage, output, and controls. They describe capabilities, not a guarantee that every game uses them or that performance will be identical across titles.
| Area | Switch 2 | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld display | 7.9-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080, HDR10, and variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz | A larger, higher-resolution screen with HDR and supported variable-refresh-rate features. |
| Built-in storage | 256 GB UFS | More built-in capacity for games and other data, though actual usable space and game sizes vary. |
| TV output | Up to 4K at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps at 1080p or 1440p in supported games and configurations | Those are maximum supported output modes, not settings every game can reach. |
| Battery estimate | Approximately 2–6.5 hours | Nintendo says the estimate varies with the games played. |
| Storage expansion | microSD Express only for Switch 2 storage, up to 2 TB | Existing standard microSD cards can transfer Switch screenshots and videos, but cannot expand Switch 2 game storage. |
| Controllers and communication | Joy-Con 2 controllers and GameChat are among the new-system features | These are part of the new generation; compatibility for older accessories is specific, not universal. |
Nintendo’s launch announcement set the US release date as June 5, 2025, and the suggested retail price at $449.99. That is historical US launch pricing, not a statement of current price or availability.
Nintendo chose trade-offs, not a spec sheet in isolation
In its developer interviews, Nintendo described balancing processor and memory performance against component cost, display, storage, and battery life. That makes the Switch 2’s specification choices easier to understand as a set of compromises: more capable hardware within a portable system, rather than an attempt to maximize one number regardless of cost or power demands.

- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
The battery estimate illustrates why the distinction matters. Nintendo lists approximately 2–6.5 hours and says actual life depends on the game. That range is a manufacturer estimate; it is not an independent test or a promise that every title will land at either endpoint.
The same balancing act appears in storage. Nintendo says the console includes 256 GB, and a developer suggested many owners might not need to buy a microSD Express card immediately. But the expansion requirement is a material change for anyone hoping to reuse a standard microSD card for installed games: Switch 2 supports microSD Express for game storage, while standard microSD cards are limited to copying screenshots and videos from Switch.
Can I play my Switch games on Switch 2?
Yes, Nintendo says Switch 2 supports physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, alongside Switch 2-exclusive titles. But Nintendo also warns that some Switch games may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. The safe answer is therefore “many games, subject to compatibility,” not “every game and accessory works exactly as before.”

Nintendo’s developers reported that some Switch games loaded faster or ran more stably when tested on Switch 2. Developer Dohta said those cases led them to realize “that the overall gameplay experience could improve.” That is an account of observed games, not a universal enhancement promise. Nintendo says future improvements depend on game-specific updates.
For owners, the practical distinction is between the system’s general backward compatibility and a particular title’s support status. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for the games and accessories that matter to you before assuming that a favorite title, peripheral, or feature will carry over unchanged.
Why this makes Nintendo hard to call
Switch 2 makes a strong case for a narrower claim: Nintendo’s choices can be difficult to forecast from the outside. The company kept the original Switch’s central premise, named the successor plainly, and preserved access to much of the existing library. At the same time, it introduced a new generation of exclusive software, a higher-resolution screen, new performance options, new storage-card requirements, and new controller and communication features.
None of that proves Nintendo is inherently unpredictable. The official explanations show deliberate reasoning: the name reflects compatibility, and the hardware reflects trade-offs among performance, cost, and battery life. But a rationale offered after a decision is not the same as a reliable way to predict the decision beforehand. That gap is why “What is Nintendo going to do next?” remains a question I would rather not pretend to answer.
