For TechRadar’s Axel Metz, EA Sports FC 26’s biggest draw isn’t a radically different match engine: it’s the renewed feeling of following football as it is now. Current players, clubs, kits and more convincing likenesses—Cole Palmer in particular—are the details that make the annual release tempting for him. That is a personal reaction, not a claim about every player or a controlled comparison with FC 25.
Why the refreshed football world is the real hook
In his August 16, 2025 preview, Metz describes returning to annual FIFA and FC releases to keep up with current players, kits and clubs. For him, the appeal is partly that the game reflects the football conversation happening now. He points to the improved in-game likeness of Cole Palmer as a reason FC 26 could pull him back in.

That makes the headline’s “ashamed” a wry admission about his own priorities: a familiar sport made newly current can matter more to him than a sweeping gameplay overhaul. There are gameplay changes, but they are not the headline for Metz
Metz does not say the gameplay is unchanged or bad. He calls the announced changes good and welcomes the Authentic preset, while arguing that updated presentation and the renewed sense of football-world freshness could have been enough to interest him even without new gameplay changes.

EA’s July 2025 Gameplay Deep Dive describes refinements to dribbling, pace, passing, tackling, shooting, goalkeepers and physicality, alongside additions shaped by player feedback. Those are EA’s announced changes, not independent proof that FC 26 plays better than FC 25. The article does not offer a controlled comparison between the two games. What the Authentic and Competitive presets are for
EA presents the presets as choices for different kinds of play, rather than as a single universal setting:

These are descriptions of design intent; they do not establish which preset feels better to a particular player. EA gives further context in its FC 26 launch announcement.
FC 26’s release and platform context
EA lists September 26, 2025 as the worldwide standard release date for FC 26. Its release page names PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. EA’s launch announcement also says the game was available through Amazon Luna and EA Play. Physical pre-order content terms can differ, so check the specific platform and edition rather than assuming every listing includes the same extras. The annual package also includes mode updates beyond the match itself: EA cites Ultimate Team Live Events and Tournament modes, refreshed Rivals and Champs experiences, Archetypes for Clubs and Player Career, and Manager Live Challenges. These additions help explain the scope of the release, but they do not change the basis of Metz’s personal excitement.

Metz’s reaction is useful as a way to identify what you want from an annual football game, not as a verdict you have to share. Compare the things that can make a yearly edition feel meaningfully different to you:

- Match feel: Are the announced mechanics and the preset suited to how you play? EA positions Authentic for Career and Competitive for Football Ultimate Team and Clubs.
- Your platform and edition: Confirm that the release and any physical-edition terms apply to the version you intend to buy.
The available account does not establish a measured FC 25-versus-FC 26 gameplay difference. Metz’s preview provides his view on freshness and feel; EA provides feature descriptions and release facts. Treat the former as one player’s priorities and the latter as the publisher’s account of what it changed.
