FM26 is a meaningful change to Football Manager, but not an automatic upgrade for every long-time player. Its matchday and tactical changes are the clearest reasons to try it; its redesigned interface and the game’s rough launch are the strongest reasons to be cautious. I can’t honestly turn a 24-year history with the series into claims about sessions or saves I haven’t documented, so this assessment separates what the game changed from what players may value differently.
What changed in FM26?
Football Manager 26 is a released game, launched on 4 November 2025. Sports Interactive describes it as the main series’ move to Unity, with a redesigned interface and matchday experience, tactical changes, women’s football, and Premier League licensing. The developer’s FM26 feature page also highlights player movement, TransferRoom in the Recruitment Hub, and a revised setup flow. These are the developer’s stated features, not a guarantee that every change will suit every manager.

The practical question is whether these changes improve the decisions and routines that make Football Manager compelling for you. A richer match presentation matters most if you like reading play as it unfolds; a new interface matters every time you move between squad, tactics, recruitment, and inbox screens.
Is the new interface any good?
The interface is the biggest adjustment for players accustomed to older editions. A redesigned layout can make the game feel more current, but familiarity is valuable in a management sim: when routine actions take longer to find, the extra friction compounds over a long save. The available reviews show that this was a real point of division, not a settled verdict. PC Gamer’s Phil Iwaniuk found the interface difficult to work with and criticized the slower progress between matches, while TechRadar’s launch-period review described the game as undercooked. Those are reviewers’ launch assessments, not proof that every player will struggle or that the interface has remained unchanged.

If you are considering a return, give navigation a fair trial before committing to a long-term save. Spend time setting up a squad and tactics, handling recruitment, and moving through a few in-game days. If those frequent tasks feel obstructive, a stronger match engine may not compensate.
How much better is the matchday experience?
Matchday is the area where FM26 has the strongest case for being a substantial series step. Sports Interactive points to enhanced player movement and match detail, and PC Gamer praised the match-engine update and richer animations. TechRadar also praised tactical and match-engine changes despite its broader criticism of the launch build. This agreement makes matchday the most credible reason to be interested, while still leaving the value of the changes to individual taste.
The tactical changes are worth exploring if you enjoy shaping how a team behaves rather than simply selecting a familiar setup. But a refreshed engine does not by itself make FM26 better than FM24 for everyone. If your priority is fast, low-friction management between matches, the interface and pacing may matter more than what happens on the pitch.
Is FM26 still worth playing after launch?
Launch reviews need to be read as a snapshot of the game at release. TechRadar criticized bugs and features missing at launch, including international management. That omission is no longer current: Sports Interactive’s announcement feed says international management arrived in FM26, and its July 2026 guidance covers national-player scouting and squad selection for the World Cup 2026 module. See the official FM26 announcement feed for the developer’s updates.
Rank #2
That later addition changes the feature-completeness picture, but it does not erase what reviewers encountered at launch or establish that every bug has been fixed. PC Gamer and TechRadar are useful for understanding the launch reception; neither review establishes the state of every issue in October 2026.
For a separate, date-specific signal, Steam showed 38% positive from 9,388 English-language reviews overall and 56% positive among 399 reviews posted in the previous 30 days, as accessed on 8 October 2026. Those figures can change, reflect Steam reviewers rather than all players, and are not a scientific measure of quality. Check the Steam listing for its current review snapshot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.FM26 versus FM24: which should you choose?
There is no single winner without knowing what you value. FM26 offers the newer matchday direction, the Unity-based main-series release, women’s football, and international management in its updated state. FM24 may be the more comfortable choice for someone who prefers its familiar interface and established routines. The reviews establish both enthusiasm for FM26’s match engine and criticism of its interface, pacing, and launch condition; they do not establish a universal preference.
- Choose FM26 if the updated matchday, tactical changes, women’s football, or international management are compelling enough to justify learning a different interface.
- Stay with FM24 if you are satisfied with your current save and value familiar navigation over the new match presentation.
- Wait or try it before starting a long save if you are unsure whether the day-to-day flow will work for you. Your platform’s trial or subscription options, if any, depend on current availability.
Which FM26 edition fits your platform?
FM26 is not one identical release across every device. Sports Interactive lists PC via Steam, Epic, Microsoft Store, and PC Game Pass; Console on Xbox and PS5; Touch on Apple Arcade and Nintendo Switch; and Mobile on iOS and Android for Netflix members. The developer’s 4 November 2025 launch post noted that Mobile was the only edition not switching to Unity at that time, and warned that editions differ to suit their platforms. Check the official launch announcement and the relevant store before choosing: platform timing, features, and subscription availability can differ.
