But this is an online-only Early Access game, not the finished numbered sequel some longtime fans may have imagined. Repeated challenges, bugs and questions about paid map access make it harder to recommend without qualification.
Is Skate 4 out yet?
Yes. The game people often call “Skate 4” is officially titled skate. EA says it is not a numbered sequel, remake or remaster. It entered Early Access on September 16, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Steam still labels it Early Access in the listing checked for this article. EA’s launch announcement and the Steam listing describe a game that is still being developed, with no fixed exit date stated on Steam.

What kept me playing—and what didn’t
Skating is the main attraction
The strongest case for skate. is the skating itself. Flick-It controls give you room to work on trick execution, while the city encourages you to search for ledges, ramps and routes rather than simply follow a level from start to finish. Getting off the board to explore and using Quick Drop to place skateable objects support that open-ended approach. EA also describes Spectate, a trick guide called Skatepedia, customizable controls and a large multiplayer city as parts of the experience; those are publisher-described features, not guarantees that every session or system will work flawlessly. EA’s Early Access overview outlines the feature set.
Over my first 20-plus hours, free skating remained the clearest reason to return. The satisfaction comes from setting yourself a small goal—finding a line or landing a trick consistently—rather than expecting every activity to deliver a new kind of play. That distinction matters: if you enjoy self-directed practice, the sandbox can carry a lot of the experience; if you need a steady stream of bespoke missions, it is less convincing.

Challenges add direction, but repetition shows
Challenges give you objectives when you want them, but their variety does not consistently match the freedom of the city. Repeating similar tasks can make progression feel more like a prompt to keep skating than a campaign with a strong sequence of new ideas. The game’s roadmap and feature descriptions point to seasonal additions and multiple neighborhoods, but an evolving live game is not the same thing as a finished story campaign. EA’s roadmap describes the planned direction, which may change as development continues.
Progression is tied to a live game
EA describes cosmetic items that can be unlocked through play, alongside optional premium cosmetics bought with San Van Bucks. That makes the basic game free to start, but the seasonal structure means rewards and available content can change over time. The launch-era founder packs announced in September 2025 were specific to that period; their prices should not be treated as current offers. EA’s launch announcement is dated and describes those original offers.

Is skate. free, and does paid content affect the verdict?
skate. is free-to-play, with optional purchases. The more consequential value question is not whether the base game costs money, but how access to parts of the game is handled. On February 20, 2026, PC Gamer reported that Isle of Grom would initially be included with the paid Season 3 Skate Pass, briefly open to everyone, and later accessible through a premium pass or a temporary earnable-currency option. The same report said developers had previously described keeping map areas out from behind a paywall as a “hard ground rule.” That is a dated report about the Season 3 plan, not proof of the access rules in the current build. PC Gamer’s report sets out the plan and the earlier statement.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Paid cosmetics are easier to dismiss as optional; uncertainty over map access has a more direct bearing on whether players can count on the same spaces being available to them. Check the current in-game and store terms before deciding whether a season pass is worth buying.

How well does skate. run, and what platform caveats matter?
My experience includes bugs and rough edges, which is unsurprising for a game still in Early Access but still relevant when deciding whether to invest time in it. EA’s September 2026 Steam community update listed tracked problems involving trick detection, Quick Drop, challenges, replay exports, graphics settings, and crashes or stutters on some hardware. This is a dated snapshot of reported issues, not a claim that every player encounters them or that they remain unresolved in every current build. The Steam community updates provide the dated issue list.
For PC, EA’s requirements say keyboard and mouse are not supported and a controller is needed; listed examples include PS4 DualShock, PS5 DualSense, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers. The same requirements page listed macOS and Linux as unsupported and Steam Deck as unsupported at the time it was checked, so verify the current listing before relying on those compatibility details. EA’s FAQ and PC requirements are the source for those platform notes. Console players do not need to buy an additional controller just to play.

- Freedom of expression - Skater XL is unique in that it doesn't have any tricks programmed into it, only control of the movement through the thumbsticks. Each thumb Stick is connected to the corresponding foot of the Skater and as the player moves the Stick, the board instantly responds. Much like a musical instrument, the player has complete freedom, whether it be pushing to Nail a line or skating free from.
- play as real-life Pro skaters - The game is launching with highly renowned pros tiago lemos, Brandon West Gate, Evan Smith, and Tom asta. Each Skater will have their own gear that fits their style.
- real life iconic skating locations - In Skater XL, players can shred legendary real-world Skate spots that are home to some of the most iconic skaters and tricks in the world. The game will launch with three large maps based in California and the West coast.
- customizable characters and boards - The possibilities are endless for players to personalize their Skater XL experience. Players can customize their entire look, from their skater
- come play in the sandbox - each area is yours to explore. With the freedom of an open-environment, players will be able to push themselves, perfecting the subtle nuances of a highly technical trick or free form Skate.
Can you play skate. offline?
No. EA says an internet connection and an EA account are required and that there is no offline mode. That requirement is a significant limitation if you want a self-contained single-player skating game, or if your connection is unreliable. The social and multiplayer design fits a shared city, but it also means the game is dependent on an online service. EA’s FAQ states the connection and account requirements.
What do players think of skate.?
Steam’s page showed 63% positive from 62,226 English-language reviews, labeled “Mixed,” in a snapshot opened five days before October 8, 2026. Its preceding 30-day subset showed 73% positive across 1,820 reviews and was labeled “Mostly Positive.” These figures are changing Steam user reviews, not a critic score, player-count measure or verdict on console versions. They suggest a reception that has improved recently within that particular Steam snapshot, while the all-time aggregate remained mixed. Steam’s live review page may show different figures now.
Is skate. worth playing in Early Access?
For a returning fan who mainly wants a place to skate, experiment and make their own goals, yes—with the expectation that the game is still evolving. My 20-plus-hour verdict is more reserved for anyone looking for a complete traditional sequel: challenge repetition, bugs, online-only access and uncertainty around paid map access all put limits on the recommendation. The core sandbox is strong enough to make the wait feel worthwhile, but skate. is a work in progress rather than a finished answer to 15 years of anticipation.
