The reported $1.1 billion Jagex buyout was an estimate, not a disclosed sale price. On February 6, 2024, Sky News said CVC Capital Partners was in exclusive negotiations to buy the RuneScape maker from Carlyle for about £900 million. Three days later, follow-up coverage reported that CVC and Carlyle had confirmed an acquisition involving CVC and Haveli Investments, but had not disclosed the financial terms.
What the February 2024 report said
Sky News reported on February 6, 2024, that CVC Capital Partners was in exclusive negotiations to acquire Jagex from Carlyle. The reported value was about £900 million, widely rendered in contemporaneous coverage as approximately $1.1 billion. That was a reported estimate attached to negotiations, not an officially disclosed transaction price. Sky News’ February 6 report described the sale process as having attracted trade and financial bidders.
What was confirmed afterward
On February 9, Game Developer reported that CVC and Carlyle had confirmed the acquisition, with Haveli Investments also part of the buyer group. The companies did not disclose the financial terms, so the reported £900 million or approximately $1.1 billion figure should not be treated as the confirmed purchase price. Game Developer’s follow-up also attributed the $1.1 billion framing to the reported £900 million estimate.
Insider Gaming repeated the $1.1 billion figure on February 7 while attributing the report to Sky News; it was not an independent confirmation of the price. Its February 7 coverage reflects how the story was framed at the time.

Sky News reported that RuneScape had attracted well over 300 million players over its existence as of February 2024. That is a cumulative historical reach figure, not a count of current active players. Sky’s report gives the figure in the context of the company’s long-running game franchise.

The headline number combines a press-reported estimate of about £900 million with an approximate dollar conversion. The cited follow-up reporting says the transaction’s financial terms were not disclosed. It does not establish whether the estimate represented enterprise value, cash consideration, or another deal measure, so those details should not be inferred.
