If the Jagex Launcher closes as soon as you open it, there is no single confirmed cause or universal fix. First note whether you’re on Windows or macOS, whether the launcher reaches its login screen, and whether you see an error or system prompt. Then use the matching checks below: Jagex documents specific fixes for certain authentication errors, stuck updates and Mac prompts, followed by separate clean-reinstall steps for each operating system.
First, identify when and how the launcher closes
Before changing settings or removing files, establish what the launcher actually does. Jagex’s support pages cover particular scenarios, not every case of an app that exits immediately. Record the exact wording of any message and note whether the window appears, whether you can reach login, and whether the close happens before or after login.
- Windows or macOS? The launcher’s official FAQ lists these as its supported desktop platforms. Jagex says the launcher is not natively supported on Linux; use its current Linux information rather than applying the Windows or Mac reinstall directions.
- Does it close before login, or show an authentication/access error? VPN advice is most relevant to access or authentication trouble; it is not established as a universal cause of an app exiting before login.
- Is there a specific prompt or update message? Match its exact wording to the cases below before trying broader troubleshooting.
- Can you keep the launcher open long enough to reach Settings? If not, skip the settings check and continue to the clean reinstall instructions for your platform.
Match the message or prompt to Jagex’s documented cases
“Could not authenticate”
Jagex says this error is usually associated with VPN use and advises disabling the VPN before launching again. This is a targeted check for an authentication error, not evidence that VPN use explains every immediate close. See Jagex’s known-issues guidance.
“Please wait while an update is applied”
Jagex says this can happen when the launcher is running twice on the same machine. On Windows, close both launcher instances from the system tray, then start the launcher again so the update can reapply. The documented system-tray instruction is Windows-specific; don’t assume another platform has the same controls.

Mac installer opens with no error, but does not run
For this installer-specific symptom, Jagex identifies Auto Proxy Discovery as a possible cause. On macOS, go to Apple menu → System Settings → Network → select your network service → Details → Proxies, then disable Auto Proxy Discovery. Jagex’s advice concerns an installer that does not run; it is not a confirmed fix for every installed launcher that exits on opening.
Mac displays a Rosetta installation prompt
Jagex says the launcher is currently an Intel-based application. If macOS prompts you to install Rosetta, choose Install, wait for installation to finish, and relaunch the launcher. Jagex’s known-issues page also says Apple Silicon native support is being developed and gives a forward-looking compatibility statement tied to macOS 28 in 2027. Because that timing may change, check the current Jagex notice rather than treating the stated timeline as a guarantee.

If it stays open, check launcher settings
If the launcher remains open long enough, Jagex says users experiencing issues can turn off test features in Launcher settings and restart. On Windows, you can also choose whether closing the launcher minimizes it to the system tray or exits it completely. These settings are only useful if you can reach them; if the launcher closes too quickly, proceed to the platform-specific reinstall instead. See Jagex’s launcher features guide.
Use connection checks only when the symptoms point to access trouble
Jagex says VPNs, proxies and hosting servers can interfere with its games, websites and launcher, and recommends disabling them when access is failing. Its general connection guidance also covers network resets, DNS, firewall and system-resource checks for connection or gameplay problems. Those broader steps are not established as fixes for a launcher process that exits before attempting to connect, so prioritize them when the error indicates a connection or access issue.

Clean reinstall the launcher
If the matching prompt checks do not help, follow Jagex’s fresh install guide. The removal steps differ by operating system. Before deleting anything, confirm that you have selected the listed Jagex Launcher folder and follow Jagex’s instructions; do not remove unrelated files.
Windows
- Uninstall Jagex Launcher from installed programs, using its Remove option or Control Panel.
- If they remain, remove these listed folders:

- Look for remaining Jagex or RuneScape folders as directed in Jagex’s guide.
- Download a fresh installer from Jagex, install to a new location and check whether the launcher opens.
- If problems persist during installation, Jagex suggests right-clicking the installer and choosing Run as administrator; it also suggests trying with a VPN disabled.
macOS
- Drag Jagex Launcher from Applications to the Bin.
- Remove
~/Library/Application Support/Jagex Launcher/and any remaining Jagex or RuneScape folders identified by Jagex’s guide. - Download a fresh installer from Jagex, reinstall and check whether the launcher opens.
- If problems persist, Jagex suggests disabling a VPN if one is currently enabled.
What a login problem does—and does not—explain
A Jagex Account is required to log in to the launcher, according to Jagex’s launcher FAQ. That requirement may explain a problem at the login stage, but it does not establish why the app itself closes before login. The FAQ also says the launcher can automatically find an existing RuneScape or Old School RuneScape installation.

Jagex says the launcher generally no longer requires administrator access to install, while installing the official Old School client through the launcher requires it. That distinction is separate from Jagex’s suggestion to run the installer as administrator if trouble persists during Windows troubleshooting: it is not a general instruction to run the launcher permanently as administrator.
