More than 50 years after his death, he remains driven by his conflict with Arasaka—and his unfinished business from the 2023 attack on Arasaka Tower.
Who is Johnny Silverhand?
Johnny is a chrome-rock musician who became famous as the frontman of SAMURAI. CD PROJEKT RED describes him as one of Night City’s most iconic and controversial figures, known for his intense opposition to corporations and his limitless grudge against Arasaka. The official Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition booklet presents him as a figure whose public legend is inseparable from that conflict.

What happened to Johnny Silverhand?
Johnny is dead by the events of Cyberpunk 2077. The official booklet places his death more than 50 years before 2077, while also describing his digital construct as present in V’s head. That “over 50 years” is part of the game’s fictional timeline, not a real-world statistic.
His story is tied to the 2023 attack on Arasaka Tower. The booklet’s high-level account says Johnny detonated a tactical nuclear weapon inside the tower and later has a chance to finish what he started. It does not provide a full chronology of the attack, so this summary should not be taken as resolving every difference between the game’s account and other Cyberpunk lore.

Why is Johnny Silverhand in V’s head?
Johnny’s digital construct is stored on the Relic, a device that ends up in V’s possession. The Relic causes the construct to become stuck in V’s head, making Johnny an unwillingly close companion during V’s adventure. As CD PROJEKT RED puts it, he is one of V’s closest companions “whether he’s welcome or not.”
What is Johnny Silverhand’s connection to Arasaka?
Arasaka is the focus of Johnny’s lasting vendetta. His anti-corporate beliefs shape his identity, but his hatred of Arasaka is also personal and connected to the 2023 tower attack. The Relic gives him another opportunity to pursue the conflict, even though he is no longer alive in the conventional sense.
