The “Launcher could not be launched due to a network issue” message is a broad failure notice, not a diagnosis. It can indicate a Jagex outage, a VPN or proxy block, DNS or firewall trouble, a damaged Launcher installation, or a failure in the game-client handoff after the Launcher itself has connected.
Before reinstalling anything, check the official Old School RuneScape Game Status Information Centre, close every Jagex Launcher process, disable any VPN or proxy, and test a different network if possible. The quickest way to narrow it down is simple: if the website, mobile client, and multiple networks also fail, suspect Jagex or an upstream access problem; if only one computer or network fails, troubleshoot locally.

What the Jagex Launcher network error actually means
The Jagex Launcher relies on more than one connection. Depending on what you are doing, it may need to:
- Authenticate your Jagex Account.
- Download or apply a Launcher update.
- Download, update, or locate RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, or RuneLite.
- Hand control from the Launcher to the selected game client.
- Connect the game client to the login service and a game world.
A problem at any of these stages may be reduced to the same generic “network problem” message. Jagex does not publish a complete error-code-to-cause mapping for this wording, so it is not accurate to assume that your whole internet connection is down—or that Jagex is definitely offline.

Use the symptom and decision guide below to identify which part of the process is failing before applying more invasive fixes.
First, check whether Jagex is down
Outage checking should come before deleting files, changing Windows networking, or reinstalling the Launcher. If the fault is on Jagex’s side, local repairs will not fix it and may create additional problems.
- Open the official Game Status Information Centre.
- Try the official OSRS website and, where relevant, the RuneScape website.
- Check whether the same account or service works on mobile.
- Ask friends in different regions whether they are seeing the same error.
- Try a phone hotspot briefly. This is a diagnostic comparison, not necessarily a permanent workaround.
The official status page covers planned downtime, routine maintenance, and live game issues. Its published schedule says routine maintenance usually occurs on Tuesdays and weekly game updates usually occur on Wednesdays, although schedules can change. Always use the live page rather than relying on the usual day.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For context, the status page displayed “Current Status: ONLINE” in the research snapshot on August 10, 2026. The page itself was dated June 24, 2026, which illustrates why a green status indicator should be treated as useful evidence rather than absolute proof that every Launcher authentication, update, or regional routing endpoint is healthy.
A working website also does not prove that the Launcher is healthy for every player. The website, account authentication service, content-delivery systems, and game-world connections can be affected independently. Conversely, historical Reddit reports show that this exact Launcher wording has appeared during wider Jagex incidents, but those reports are anecdotal and cannot establish the cause of an individual failure. Examples include this OSRS report and this RuneScape report.
When waiting is the correct fix
Stop making local changes and wait for an official update when:
- Players in multiple regions report the same failure.
- The official website, mobile access, and desktop access fail together.
- The Launcher fails on more than one unrelated network.
- The status page or official Jagex channels acknowledge an incident.
- Switching DNS, restarting the router, and testing without a VPN produce no change across several devices.
Do not repeatedly reinstall the Launcher during a likely service outage. Recheck the status page periodically and keep your account credentials out of unofficial “fix” tools.

| Error or symptom | Best first check |
|---|---|
| “Launcher could not be launched due to a network issue. Please try again later.” | Check service status, then disable VPN/proxy, close duplicate processes, and test DNS and firewall access. |
| “Could not authenticate” | Disable the VPN or proxy first. If an access-block page appears, follow its security-block instructions and record the Ray-ID. |
| “Please wait while an update is applied” | Close both Launcher instances from the system tray, then reopen one Launcher. |
| “Access blocked” with a Ray-ID | Jagex has denied the connection through its security services. Disable VPNs, check browser and time settings, and keep the Ray-ID for support. |
| The Launcher opens, but RuneScape or RuneLite will not start | Treat it as a client-launch, cache, permissions, installation-location, or client-firewall problem—not automatically as a Launcher outage. |
| Mac installer silently fails | Check Auto Proxy Discovery under the active network service’s proxy settings. |
Jagex’s known-issues guide specifically connects authentication failures with VPN use, recommends closing duplicate Launchers for the stuck-update message, and documents several Mac-specific problems.
Fix the problem in the safest order
1. Fully close the Launcher and restart it once
Do not keep clicking the Launcher icon while it is stuck. A second process can leave the first update or login operation locked.
- Close the visible Launcher window.
- On Windows, open the system tray near the clock, right-click the Jagex Launcher icon, and choose its quit or exit option.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and check for remaining Jagex Launcher processes. If the application clearly remains stuck, end the leftover Launcher process.
- Start the Launcher again once.
Closing both instances from the system tray is Jagex’s documented fix for the “Please wait while an update is applied” problem. Ending a leftover process through Task Manager is a commonly reported community workaround, not a guaranteed official solution; use it only when the Launcher has visibly failed to exit.
2. Disable VPNs, proxies, and hosted network routing
Temporarily disable the following before testing:
- Commercial VPN applications.
- Operating-system proxy settings.
- Browser or security-suite VPN features.
- Split-tunneling rules that route Jagex traffic through a VPN.
- Cloud-hosted, remote-desktop, or other hosting-server connections.
Jagex says VPNs, proxies, and hosting servers can interfere with its websites, games, and Launcher. Its support position is to disable the VPN, not to cycle through different VPN servers. VPN address ranges may be challenged or blocked by security services, so changing countries is not a reliable workaround.

3. Restart the modem and router correctly
Use Jagex’s dedicated reset procedure:
- Turn off the computers and other devices connected to the modem or router.
- Turn off and unplug the modem/router.
- Leave it unplugged for 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Wait until the connection lights stabilize.
- Restart the computer and test the Launcher.
The full procedure is documented in Jagex’s reset your network and devices guide. A restart can refresh the local connection and, depending on your ISP, may change a temporary public-IP or routing condition. It will not repair a Jagex-wide outage or an account restriction.
4. Compare Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and a phone hotspot
Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if available, and pause large downloads, streams, cloud backups, and other game updates while testing. Then try a phone hotspot for a short comparison.
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails: investigate wireless interference, router settings, or the Wi-Fi adapter.
- Hotspot works but home internet fails: the likely categories are the home router, ISP, DNS, filtering, routing, or the home public IP. This is a strong diagnostic clue, not conclusive proof.
- Both home internet and hotspot fail: suspect the computer, Launcher installation, account authentication, or a broader Jagex issue.
- Only work or school internet fails: involve the network administrator rather than attempting to bypass policy.
For in-game connection problems after login, Jagex also recommends a wired connection and suggests using a geographically closer world where possible. That advice is less relevant when the Launcher cannot authenticate at all.
5. Flush DNS on Windows
Open Command Prompt and run these commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Close and reopen the Launcher after the commands finish. Jagex documents this sequence in its DNS-cache guide.
Flushing DNS clears locally cached name-resolution data; it does not delete your account, game files, or characters. It also will not fix a Jagex outage, an authentication restriction, or a firewall that blocks the connection. If only your ISP’s DNS path fails, testing a different DNS provider may help, but DNS changes are an advanced comparison step rather than a universal cure.
6. Check firewall and antivirus rules
Security software may block the Launcher or the client even when ordinary websites work. Prefer specific application or domain exceptions instead of turning off the firewall entirely. Jagex’s published exception list includes:
Java.exe
JagexLauncher.exe
*.runescape.com
RuneScape.exe
rs2client.exe
osclient.exe
*jagex.com
These names come from Jagex’s firewall-exceptions guide. The actual executable location can vary by installation, so select the installed program rather than creating a rule for an arbitrary file downloaded from the internet.
Jagex also lists these game ports:
43594
43595
Do not blindly create port forwards on your router. Normal outbound game traffic does not always require manual port forwarding, and the correct rule depends on the router, firewall, ISP, and network design. School, workplace, apartment, mobile, and carrier-grade-NAT networks may not allow you to change these settings at all. If a managed network blocks the required traffic, the administrator or ISP is the appropriate escalation point.
7. Disable Launcher Test Features
If the failure began after a Launcher update or after enabling an experimental option, turn off test features:
- Open the Launcher settings using the control in the top-right corner.
- Select Test Features.
- Untick Enable test features on this Launcher.
- Restart the Launcher.
This is a specific Jagex recommendation in its Launcher features guide. It is a safer first response to an update-related malfunction than deleting caches or changing Windows network settings.

- Run the following commands:
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect to the network and test the Launcher before making further changes.
These commands are part of Jagex’s common connection solutions. If other software relies on custom network settings, note those settings before resetting them.
macOS-specific fixes
Disable Auto Proxy Discovery if the installer silently fails
Jagex identifies automatic proxy discovery as a possible cause of a silent Mac installer failure. Temporarily turn it off using this current macOS path:
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Choose Network.
- Select the active network service.
- Click Details.
- Open Proxies.
- Disable Auto Proxy Discovery, then retry the installer.
If the installation succeeds, restore the setting if your network requires automatic proxy discovery, and ask the network administrator whether the proxy configuration is compatible with the Launcher.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFlush DNS on a current Mac
Jagex’s command for macOS 11 Big Sur is:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
Enter your macOS password if prompted, then close and reopen the Launcher. Jagex also lists this command for macOS 10.10.4 through macOS 10.15 Catalina:
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
Those older operating systems should not be treated as the normal target for a current installation: Jagex’s current recommended specifications list macOS 11 Big Sur or later for the Launcher.
Keep Launcher and game-client permissions consistent
If the Launcher opens the game but the client requests a fresh login or fails to connect, avoid mixing administrator and standard-user permissions. Jagex’s known-issues guidance recommends running the Launcher and game client with consistent permissions, preferably as the normal operating-system user.
Jagex’s documentation is inconsistent on the broader administrator requirement: its recommended-specifications page says administrator permissions are required, while its FAQ says the Launcher no longer generally requires administrator access but that installing the official OSRS client through the Launcher may require it. The practical approach is to use macOS 11 or later, follow the installer’s permission prompt, and avoid permanently running the Launcher as administrator unless the operating system or Jagex specifically requires it.
Clean-reinstall the Launcher only after network checks
A clean reinstall is useful when the Launcher installation or update state is damaged, especially if the issue began immediately after an update. It is not the right first fix for a confirmed outage, an IP block, or a failing school network.
Windows clean installation
- Uninstall Jagex Launcher through Windows.
- After uninstalling, remove the residual Jagex Launcher folders listed by Jagex:
C:Program Files (x86)Jagex Launcher
C:ProgramDataJagex Launcher
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalProgramsJagex Launcher
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalJagex Launcher
- Download the installer from Jagex’s official download-links page, not from a third-party mirror.
- Install it to a new location.
- Disable any VPN during installation and the first launch.
- If the installer needs elevated permissions, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Launch the newly installed Launcher and test one client.
Some of these folders are hidden or protected. Delete only the folders belonging to the Launcher and do not remove unrelated Jagex, RuneScape, or RuneLite data just because the names look similar. The full procedure is in Jagex’s fresh-install guide.
Mac clean installation
- Open Applications in Finder.
- Move Jagex Launcher to the Bin.
- Delete the Launcher’s application-support folder:
~/Library/Application Support/Jagex Launcher/
- Download a fresh installer from Jagex.
- Reinstall and test without a VPN or proxy.
This removes Launcher data, not your Jagex Account or game characters.
Do not confuse Launcher files with the game cache
Removing the Launcher’s residual folders is different from clearing the RuneScape or RuneLite game cache. Cache deletion makes the client redownload data and should generally be reserved for a case where the Launcher works but a particular game client will not launch, update, or connect.

%localappdata%JagexOld School RuneScapedata
Its listed RuneLite cache location is:
%USERPROFILE%.runelitejagexcache
Jagex’s cache-clearing guide gives different locations for the official RuneScape client, OSRS, RuneLite, Steam, and macOS. Delete the relevant Live or Data folder only when following the client-specific instructions, then wait for the cache to reach 100% before playing.
Clearing a cache does not delete characters or account progress, but it can consume significant bandwidth and time. It is not a sensible first response to “Could not authenticate” when the Launcher itself cannot complete login.
When the Launcher works but RuneLite or a game client fails
Separate the Launcher from the client. Test whether the official RuneScape or OSRS client launches, if it is installed. The results are useful:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Only RuneLite fails: check RuneLite’s installation, cache, permissions, firewall rule, and logs.
- Only the official client fails: check its cache, graphics requirements, installation, and firewall permissions.
- Every client fails after successful Launcher login: check client firewall rules, permissions, DNS, and whether the network blocks game traffic.
The Launcher can find an existing RuneLite installation only if its files have not been moved. If RuneLite was moved, Jagex says to reinstall RuneLite with the RuneLite installer rather than expecting the Launcher to discover the new location automatically. See the Jagex Launcher FAQ.
Also check the operating-system boundary. Jagex currently lists Windows 10 or later, 64-bit for the Windows Launcher and macOS 11 Big Sur or later for the Mac Launcher. The RuneScape and OSRS clients have separate CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and graphics-API requirements, so a computer may meet the Launcher requirement but still be unable to run the selected game client. Compare the machine with Jagex’s recommended specifications.
Linux users: use the current official beta information
Older Jagex support pages say that the Launcher and Jagex Accounts were not supported on Linux. That is no longer the complete current position. Jagex released an official Jagex Launcher for Linux Beta on July 16, 2026, and its download page lists a Linux download marked Beta.
According to Jagex’s announcement, the beta currently:
- Provides native Jagex Launcher support on Linux.
- Supports logging in with a Jagex Account.
- Provides access to RuneLite for Old School RuneScape.
- Installs RuneLite automatically the first time the user clicks Play Now.
- Can keep a login session for up to two weeks before reauthentication is required.
It does not yet provide the full Windows/macOS feature set. RuneScape support was planned for later in 2026, and Steam Deck and other specialist distribution methods were still under consideration in the announcement. Because it is beta software, Linux-specific Launcher failures may be beta defects rather than ordinary network faults. Jagex directs bug reports to the official Discord’s #Linux-Launcher channel.
Use the official Linux Launcher Beta announcement and the official download page before following old Wine, Bolt, or third-party-launcher instructions. Do not assume that a Linux workaround provides feature parity with Windows or macOS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Special case: access blocked or a Ray-ID appears
An Access Blocked message with a Ray-ID means Jagex’s security services denied the connection. Jagex describes this as a connection block, not automatically an account ban.
Follow Jagex’s Access Blocked guidance:
- Disable VPNs and proxies.
- Check browser JavaScript and extensions if the block appeared in a browser login flow.
- Verify the device’s date, time zone, and clock.
- Update the operating system, browser, and Launcher.
- Save the Ray-ID and include it in a support request if the block continues.
Do not repeatedly retry from a rotating collection of VPN addresses. That can make the connection look more suspicious and does not address the underlying block.
Account transitions are not network fixes
The Jagex Launcher requires a Jagex Account for normal Launcher access. Jagex states that, from November 7, 2023, players need a Jagex Account to access the Launcher. If the problem began after upgrading or linking an account, check the login method and account setup rather than assuming a network outage.

An account-transition or authentication problem can occur alongside a genuine connectivity problem, but flushing DNS, forwarding ports, or reinstalling RuneLite will not convert a non-Jagex login into a valid Jagex Account login. Use Jagex’s Launcher login instructions for the account-specific process.
Use evidence to decide where the fault is
| What you observe | Most likely categories | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Website, mobile, and desktop all fail; other players report it too | Jagex-wide outage or authentication incident | Check official status information, avoid destructive fixes, and wait for resolution. |
| Website works, but Launcher alone fails on one computer | VPN/proxy, duplicate process, DNS, firewall, test feature, or damaged Launcher files | Follow the safe fix order, then clean-reinstall the Launcher. |
| Launcher works, but one client fails | Client cache, installation location, permissions, graphics requirements, or client firewall | Repair that client separately; do not immediately reinstall the Launcher. |
| Home Wi-Fi fails, phone hotspot works | Router, ISP, DNS, filtering, routing, or public-IP reputation | Restart the router, test Ethernet, review DNS and filtering, and contact the ISP if necessary. |
| Only school or workplace network fails | Managed proxy, content filter, TLS inspection, or blocked outbound traffic | Ask the administrator to review the policy; do not bypass it. |
| Failure began directly after a Launcher update | Duplicate process, test feature, incomplete update, or damaged installation | Exit every process, disable Test Features, restart, then reinstall if needed. |
Advanced diagnostics and support escalation
If the basic comparison tests do not identify the cause, Jagex provides traceroute instructions. A traceroute can show where packets stop or become unreliable, but it does not by itself prove that the final responding network is responsible; some routers intentionally do not answer diagnostic probes.
When contacting Jagex Support, send useful evidence rather than only “network error.” Include:

What not to do
- Do not assume the generic wording proves that Jagex is down.
- Do not assume normal web browsing proves that every Jagex endpoint is reachable.
- Do not use a VPN as the primary workaround; Jagex specifically warns that it can interfere with authentication.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
- Do not blindly forward router ports, especially on a managed or shared network.
- Do not delete every folder containing “Jagex,” “RuneScape,” or “RuneLite.” Launcher data and game caches are different.
- Do not treat Steam or mobile as guaranteed bypasses for a Jagex Account or Launcher authentication failure.
- Do not present Reddit reports as confirmed root-cause findings. They are useful anecdotal clues only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Jagex Launcher network error caused by my internet?
Not necessarily. The message covers authentication, Launcher updates, client handoff, and game connections. Compare the official website, another device, and a phone hotspot before deciding whether the local internet connection is responsible.
Should I reinstall RuneLite to fix a Launcher authentication error?
Usually not. If the Launcher cannot authenticate, first check Jagex status, disable VPNs and proxies, close duplicate Launcher processes, and test DNS and firewall access. Reinstall RuneLite only when the Launcher works but RuneLite itself fails or was moved from its original installation location.
Should I use a VPN if the Jagex Launcher cannot connect?
No. Jagex warns that VPNs, proxies, and hosting servers can interfere with its services and authentication. Disable them while testing instead of switching between VPN servers.
Do I need to open ports 43594 and 43595?
Jagex lists ports 43594 and 43595 in its firewall guidance, but manual router port forwarding is not a universal requirement or guaranteed fix. Prefer correct outbound application and firewall rules, and involve the network administrator or ISP on managed networks.
Why does a phone hotspot work when home Wi-Fi does not?
That result points toward the home router, ISP, DNS, filtering, routing, or public-IP reputation. It is a strong diagnostic clue, not conclusive proof. Restart the router, test Ethernet, and contact the ISP if the problem persists.
Will flushing DNS delete my game or account?
No. Windows DNS commands and the macOS DNS commands clear name-resolution information; they do not delete game files, characters, or account data. They also cannot fix a Jagex outage or an account block.
Can I play without the Jagex Launcher?
That depends on the account and client. Jagex Account access through the Launcher is the normal supported route, while Steam and mobile are comparison paths rather than guaranteed workarounds. Use Jagex’s current login and download documentation for your platform.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Jagex released an official Linux Launcher Beta on July 16, 2026. The initial beta supports Jagex Account login and RuneLite for OSRS, with a two-week login-session period. It does not yet have full Windows/macOS feature parity, and RuneScape support was planned for later in 2026.
Does reinstalling the Launcher remove my characters?
No. A Launcher clean install removes local Launcher files. Do not confuse that with deleting a game cache, and never delete unrelated account or game folders. Characters and account progress are stored with the account, not in the Launcher installation folder.
The Bottom Line
There is no single fix for a Jagex Launcher network problem because the message covers several services and failure points. Check Jagex status first, then fully close duplicate processes, disable VPNs and proxies, restart the router, compare another network, flush DNS, review firewall rules, disable Test Features, and only then consider a clean reinstall. If the same failure appears across devices and networks, stop reinstalling and provide Jagex Support with the exact error, timestamp, platform, network comparisons, and any Ray-ID.
