My PS5 Is Stuck in Appear Offline Mode? Try These Fixes

Appear Offline is a visibility setting, not a loss of internet access. Learn how to resync your PS5 status with the PlayStation App, check PSN and privacy settings, test your network, and separate status problems from PlayStation Plus or game-server failures.

Appear Offline is a visibility setting, not the same as disconnecting your PS5 from the internet. It normally should not stop you from playing online, joining games, or receiving voice-chat invitations. If your PS5 keeps reverting to Appear Offline, shows Unknown or Online status unavailable, or disagrees with the PlayStation App, the problem is more likely a stale account session, PSN presence-sync issue, privacy setting, or network filter than a failed console.

Start with the low-risk steps: set your status to Online from the PlayStation App, check PSN service status, sign out and back in, and test the PS5 on another network if possible. Do not factory-reset the console unless PlayStation Support specifically directs you to do so.

First, identify which problem you have

The correct fix depends on what is actually failing. Check which description matches your PS5:

A green PSN status page does not prove that every account or social-presence service is working. Compare whether your friends list, Game Base, PlayStation App, Store, and online games work. Also test another account on the same PS5 or another network if you can.

What Appear Offline actually does

PlayStation provides three main presence options on PS5:

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately
  • Online: Your normal visible presence.
  • Busy: You appear online but signal that you do not want to be disturbed. Sony says this option is not available on PS4.
  • Appear Offline: Friends and other players generally see you as offline.

Appear Offline does not turn off the PS5’s internet connection. Sony says that users set to Busy or Appear Offline can still be invited to voice chat and online games. You may also appear online to other players in some circumstances inside a game.

The status belongs to your PlayStation account and is shared across supported PS5 and PS4 consoles and the PlayStation App. The next time you sign in, PlayStation preserves the last-used status. Signing in on a PS3, PS Vita, or PlayStation TV is different: those devices do not support the same offline-status behavior and can make the account appear online.

That cross-device behavior is why a status that keeps reverting is best treated as an account or PSN presence-sync problem first. This is a practical diagnosis based on Sony’s documented cross-device behavior, not a Sony-confirmed explanation of a specific bug. See Sony’s online-status instructions for the supported behavior.

1. Set the status to Online from the PS5

From the PS5 home screen:

  1. Select your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Online Status.
  3. Choose Online.

You can also do it from the Control Center:

  1. Press the PS button on the DualSense controller.
  2. Select the profile icon.
  3. Select Online Status.
  4. Choose Online.

The profile control in the Control Center is also where you can access profile options, switch users, and log out. Sony documents this location in its guide to customizing the PS5 Control Center.

If the setting changes to Online and stays there, the issue was probably an accidental or intentionally saved presence setting. If it immediately jumps back to Appear Offline, stop repeatedly toggling the option and continue with the account-session test below.

2. Force a status resynchronization with the PlayStation App

Because the status is shared across supported devices, the PlayStation App is the safest way to test whether the account can accept a new presence state outside the PS5. Sony’s current app path is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the PlayStation App.
  2. Open the Play screen.
  3. Tap Profile.
  4. Tap Online Status.
  5. Choose Online or Busy, not Appear Offline.

Now check the PS5 and ask a friend to refresh your profile. If the app changes the status successfully but the console still displays Appear Offline, the account setting is probably being accepted and the console has a stale session or local connection problem.

Community-reported workaround for a status that keeps reverting

The following sequence has been reported by users as helping with a PS5 that repeatedly returns to Appear Offline. It is not an official Sony fix or guaranteed procedure:

  1. On the PS5, turn off its internet connection.
  2. Fully power down the PS5; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
  3. Use the PlayStation App to set the account to Online.
  4. Turn on the PS5.
  5. Reconnect the PS5 to the internet and sign in.

The idea is to prevent the console from immediately reloading a stale presence state while the app writes a fresh account status. A PlayStation support-community report describes this sequence helping one user. Treat it as a diagnostic workaround, not proof that every stuck-status problem has the same cause.

3. Restart the account session

A network outage, system update, or expired session can leave account information stale even when the PS5 is still usable. Sign out locally, restart the console, and sign back in:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Sign Out.
  2. Restart the PS5.
  3. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In.
  4. After signing in, set Online Status to Online.

At the user-selection screen, you can also press the Options button and change the online status before signing in. This can bypass a presence state that has already been loaded into the active session. Sony’s sign-in guidance covers local sign-out, sign-in, and account-session management.

Sign out everywhere if another device may be involved

If you recently used the account on another PS5 or PS4, or someone else may still be using it, sign out on all devices:

  1. Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Select Sign Out on All Devices.
  4. Sign in again on the affected PS5.
  5. Set the status to Online.

Do not confuse this with Deactivate All Devices. Remote deactivation is for console activation and content-sharing management, not a routine online-status repair. Sony limits remote deactivation to once every six months; its separate console-deactivation guide explains the distinction.

4. Check whether PSN is experiencing a problem

Open the official PlayStation Network status page and look especially at Gaming and Social, account management, and any other service category showing an alert or maintenance notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Presence, friends, and Game Base are social-account functions, so a problem can affect them while the Store or another service still works. Use these comparisons:

  • Can the friends list load?
  • Does Game Base open normally?
  • Can the PlayStation App see or change your status?
  • Can another account on the same PS5 appear Online?
  • Does the problem continue on a phone hotspot or another internet connection?

If PSN reports an outage, wait for Sony to restore the service before changing advanced router settings. If the status page is green but only your account is affected, continue with the session, privacy, and account checks rather than assuming the console is defective.

5. Test the PS5’s actual internet connection

On the PS5, go to:

Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection

This tests a different layer from the visible Online Status label. A successful test does not prove that every PSN social service is functioning, but a failed test establishes a local network problem that must be fixed first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also open:

Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection

  • Re-select the saved Wi-Fi network.
  • Re-enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted.
  • Use Ethernet temporarily if possible.
  • Test a phone hotspot, if available.

The comparison is useful: if the status works over Ethernet or a hotspot but not on your home network, investigate the router, DNS filtering, firewall, or ISP connection. Sony discusses connection setup, wired networking, IPv4/IPv6 compatibility, DNS, MTU, proxy settings, and related network options in its PlayStation internet-connection guide.

6. Restart the modem and router correctly

For a network-related symptom, follow this order:

  1. Turn off the modem and router.
  2. Wait at least five minutes.
  3. Turn the modem and router back on.
  4. Wait until the internet connection is restored.
  5. Restart the PS5.
  6. Run the PS5 internet connection test again.
  7. Try setting your status to Online.

Sony specifically recommends waiting at least five minutes before restarting network equipment for several PS5 connection errors. Its connection-error guidance provides the relevant restart sequence.

7. Investigate filtering and advanced network settings

These are edge cases, not the first fixes to try. Consider them when a hotspot works, Game Base fails while other internet services work, or the problem affects every account on the home network.

DNS filters and blocking software

A Pi-hole, AdGuard, parental-control service, VPN, managed network, or DNS deny list may block PlayStation endpoints needed for account presence, friends, or Game Base. One user reported that removing PlayStation-related traffic from a DNS deny list resolved the problem, but that is anecdotal and does not identify a universal domain list or guaranteed fix.

Temporarily bypass such filtering only if you control the network and understand the security and privacy implications. Check the router’s DNS settings, filtering logs, parental controls, and VPN configuration. Restore your normal settings after testing if they are not responsible.

IPv4 and IPv6

Sony says the PS5 supports IPv6 but does not support IPv6-only network connections. If your router is configured as IPv6-only, enable IPv4 or dual-stack networking and test again.

DNS, MTU, proxy, and port forwarding

The PS5 exposes advanced options for IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy. Sony also lists ports in the context of certain PSN connection problems. However:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • There is no verified universal DNS address that fixes a stuck Appear Offline status.
  • DNS providers such as Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS may help a particular ISP or filtering configuration, but they are not guaranteed solutions.
  • MTU 1473 is an anecdotal workaround, not a Sony-prescribed fix for presence synchronization.
  • Changing MTU can create new connection problems. Record the original value so you can undo the experiment.
  • Port forwarding is not guaranteed to repair a presence-sync issue and can unnecessarily expose router services. Use it only when Sony or your router manufacturer recommends it for a specific error.

User-generated reports on Push Square and other troubleshooting pages mention DNS and MTU changes, but those reports are not controlled evidence. Try simpler, reversible tests first.

8. Review privacy settings

Privacy controls are separate from the Online Status selector. You can be set to Online while restricting who can see your online status or what you are playing.

On PS5, go to:

Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy

Choose either a preset or View and Customize Your Privacy Settings. Check the activity setting for who can see your online status and what you’re currently playing.

Privacy settings are associated with the account and reflected across devices. Child accounts may have network and visibility settings controlled by a family manager or parent or guardian. Sony explains the relevant controls in its PS5 privacy-settings guide.

  • What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition; DualSense; USB cable, HDMI cable.

This step is especially important when your own profile says Online but friends still see you as offline. It will not usually explain a selector that visibly changes back to Appear Offline, but it can produce a very similar result to other people.

9. If online games or parties also fail

Do not treat Appear Offline as the cause automatically. Sony says a user who appears offline can still be invited to online games and voice chat. Investigate these separate possibilities:

PlayStation Plus

Most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, although some games do not. Check the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing and the PlayStation Plus support information. Appear Offline does not grant or remove the subscription requirement.

Game-specific server outage

If only one game fails, check the publisher’s server status, the game’s in-game service notice, and any error code. The PS5 can have a perfectly normal account presence while a particular game’s servers are down or undergoing maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

License or padlock problem

Use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses only when the symptoms suggest a license issue, such as a padlock icon, missing purchased content, or a game that cannot validate ownership. Restore Licenses is not a general fix for an Appear Offline status.

Similarly, Console Sharing and Offline Play controls sharing of purchases and some PlayStation Plus benefits. It does not control the account’s visible Online Status; Sony covers that feature separately in its Console Sharing and Offline Play guide.

Child-account restrictions

A child account may be unable to use particular network, communication, or visibility features because of age restrictions or family-manager controls. Review the family settings rather than changing unrelated console options.

10. Check Discord separately

If the PS5 and PlayStation App show the correct status but Discord shows you as offline or does not display the game, treat it as a third-party presence issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation’s Discord integration depends on the account’s online-status and Now Playing privacy settings allowing the information to be shared. If you choose Appear Offline on PlayStation, your PlayStation status does not show as online in Discord either.

Review the connection between the accounts, Discord’s activity-sharing options, and authorized apps. On PS5, open:

Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps

In the PlayStation App, open the settings gear and select Authorized Apps. You can unlink an app you no longer trust or need. See Sony’s guides for Discord presence sharing and authorized-app management.

11. Update the PS5 before trying Safe Mode

Install any system-software update that the console offers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings

Do not rely on a hard-coded firmware number because Sony can release updates in phases and the current version changes. To check the installed version, go to:

Settings > System > System Software > Console Information

Rank #4
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition – Call of Duty®: Black Ops 6 Bundle (model group – slim)
  • Includes Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 full-game voucher (Account for PlayStation Network and internet connection required to redeem voucher)
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Fee, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, Astro's Playroom (pre-installed game)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Vertical Stand sold separately

The console shows Up to date when the current version is installed. Sony’s PS5 system-software guide and version-check instructions explain the current menu locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Use Safe Mode carefully

Safe Mode is reasonable only after the account, PSN, and network checks. It is not a proven repair for PSN presence synchronization, and Sony does not specifically identify Appear Offline problems as a Safe Mode target.

To enter Safe Mode:

  1. Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for three seconds.
  2. Press and hold the power button again.
  3. Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first beep.
  4. Connect the DualSense controller with a USB cable.
  5. Press the PS button.

For a stuck status or other system-feature issue, the least destructive options worth considering are:

  • Clear System Software Cache: Clears temporary system data. Sony associates this with system-feature problems or performance drops.
  • Rebuild Database: Scans the drive and creates a new content database. Sony says it may help with system-feature issues.

Neither option is a guaranteed solution for an account-side status problem. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode guide and do not interrupt the console while it works.

Do not casually choose a reset

  • Restore Default Settings: Resets console settings but does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data.
  • Reset PS5: Deletes all user data.
  • Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software): Deletes all user data and removes the system software.

A factory reset is excessive for an isolated status label and there is no Sony-specific evidence that it is the appropriate first response. Back up important data and contact PlayStation Support before using a destructive option.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Could the account be suspended?

Appear Offline by itself does not mean your account is suspended. A suspension generally produces a sign-in error and/or an email from PlayStation. Look into account security if you see repeated forced sign-outs, an unfamiliar email or password change, unexpected purchases, or another sign-in error.

If unauthorized access is possible:

  1. Check the email address associated with the PlayStation account.
  2. Change the password using Sony’s password-reset and account-recovery guidance.
  3. Use Sign Out on All Devices in Account Management.
  4. Contact PlayStation Support if you cannot recover the account.

Do not infer a suspension from a privacy setting or an ordinary presence-sync failure.

Fastest diagnostic route

For most readers, this order gives the most information with the least risk:

  1. Set Online Status > Online on the PS5.
  2. Set it to Online in the PlayStation App.
  3. If it reverts, disconnect the PS5, power it down, set Online in the app, then reconnect and sign in.
  4. Check the official PSN status page.
  5. Run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
  6. Restart the modem and router for at least five minutes, then restart the PS5.
  7. Sign out and back in; use Sign Out on All Devices if another console or session may be involved.
  8. Test Ethernet or a phone hotspot.
  9. Review privacy settings, DNS filters, IPv4/IPv6 configuration, and authorized apps.
  10. Update the PS5, then consider Safe Mode cache clearing or database rebuilding only if other system features also behave abnormally.

The result of the network comparison is particularly useful:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Hotspot works, home network fails: Focus on the router, DNS filtering, firewall, IPv4 support, or ISP.
  • Another account works on the same PS5: Focus on the affected account, its sessions, privacy, or authorized apps.
  • Every account fails on the same PS5 and network: Focus on the console software, router, or a broader PSN issue.
  • The issue persists across networks and devices: An account-side or PSN-side problem becomes more likely.

When to contact PlayStation Support

Contact PlayStation Support if the status remains wrong after testing the app, signing in again, checking PSN, and using another network. Before contacting support, record:

  • The exact status message, such as Appear Offline, Unknown, or Online status unavailable.
  • Any error code and the screen where it appears.
  • The date and time, including your time zone, when the issue occurred.
  • Whether the PSN status page showed an alert.
  • The result of the PS5 internet connection test.
  • Whether the PlayStation App could set the account to Online.
  • Whether another account worked on the PS5.
  • Whether Ethernet or a phone hotspot changed the result.
  • Whether friends list, Game Base, Store, parties, and online games each worked.

This information helps support distinguish a local network problem from an account-session or PSN social-service problem without resorting to data-destructive repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play online while my PS5 says Appear Offline?

Yes. Appear Offline changes how your presence is displayed; it does not disconnect the PS5. Sony says users set to Appear Offline can still be invited to online games and voice chat. If a game will not connect, check PSN, the game’s servers, PlayStation Plus, account restrictions, and licenses separately.

Why does my PS5 keep changing back to Appear Offline?

The most likely categories are a stale account session, a PSN presence-synchronization problem, or a network filter blocking PlayStation social services. Set the status to Online in the PlayStation App, then try the community-reported sequence of disconnecting and powering down the PS5 before changing the status in the app and reconnecting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my PS5 say Online status unavailable?

That message suggests the console cannot retrieve or synchronize presence information from a PSN social service. Check the official PSN status page, test the PS5 connection, restart the router, sign out and back in, and test another network. A successful internet test does not guarantee that every PSN social service is working.

Will rebuilding the PS5 database fix Appear Offline?

It might help only if the console also has broader system-feature problems, but Sony does not specifically identify Appear Offline synchronization as a Rebuild Database target. Try account and network steps first, and never choose Reset PS5 as a casual troubleshooting step because it deletes user data.

Does Appear Offline prevent Discord from showing my PlayStation status?

Yes, PlayStation says that choosing Appear Offline prevents the PlayStation status from appearing as online in Discord. If the PS5 is correctly set to Online but Discord is still wrong, check PlayStation privacy settings, Discord linking, activity sharing, and authorized apps.

The Bottom Line

Appear Offline is normally only a presence setting. Set the account to Online in the PS5 and PlayStation App, then diagnose a reversion or Unknown message as a possible session, PSN, privacy, or network-sync problem. Check PSN and test another network before changing DNS, MTU, ports, or using Safe Mode. Do not factory-reset the PS5 for this symptom alone.
