Sony’s Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition is not a Midnight Black console, and its release date was November 21, 2025—not November 19. Sony announced a Japanese-language-only model for Japan at a suggested retail price of ¥55,000, tax included. Its account and region requirements make it a poor fit for many buyers outside Japan.
What Sony actually announced
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Japanese-language-only model on November 12, 2025. Sony set its Japan release for November 21, 2025, at a suggested retail price of ¥55,000, tax included. The announcement does not identify it as Midnight Black or give November 19 as its launch date.

Who can use the Japan-only model?
Sony says the console is limited to use in Japan and can be used only with a PlayStation account set to Japanese for the console language and Japan for its country/region. That restriction matters more than the console’s physical location: buyers who rely on an account registered to another country or region do not meet Sony’s stated requirements. Sony’s announcement does not establish that this model is suitable for use with accounts from other regions.

What is included, and how do games work?
The model is sold without a disc drive and has an 825 GB SSD. Sony says it supports downloaded PS5 games and supported PS4 games obtained from the Japanese PlayStation Store. The 825 GB figure is the stated SSD capacity; it is not a promise that the full amount will be available for game installations.

Adding a disc drive
Sony says a separately purchased disc drive can be attached to play packaged games. Its later warranty campaign announcement also describes playing packaged video with a drive. Pairing the drive with the console requires an internet connection. Sony’s cited announcements do not identify an exact compatible drive SKU, so check compatibility before buying one.
Why “Midnight Black” appears in the title
Sony’s separate Midnight Black announcement is for a cover compatible with the CFI-2000 model group (the slim PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition). It is not evidence of a Midnight Black version of the Japan-only console. Sony listed the cover at ¥7,480, tax included; that is the cover’s suggested retail price, not the price of the Japan-only console.

As of October 13, 2026, Sony’s campaign announcement says qualifying PS5 purchases can receive an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty from one year to two years total. An application is required, and the posted campaign period runs through March 31, 2027, at 23:59. Eligibility and terms can matter, so check Sony’s official campaign details before purchasing.

Sony also says the vertical stand is sold separately. The cited announcement does not establish an exact compatible stand model; verify compatibility rather than assuming any PS5 stand will fit.

Is this the right PS5 to buy?
- It may suit you if you want a digital PS5 for Japan, use an account set to Japanese and Japan, and are comfortable buying games from the Japanese PlayStation Store.
- Look at another model if you need to use a PlayStation account registered to a different country or region, or want a disc drive included in the box.
- Do not buy it expecting a Midnight Black console or a November 19 release. Sony’s documented model is Japanese-language-only, launched November 21, 2025, and is sold without a disc drive.
