Mechanism’s Basecase is more than a protective shell: it pairs the case with interchangeable grips, cartridge storage and a backplate that connects to the company’s modular mount system. That combination makes it appealing if you want to customize how you hold or position your Switch 2. Its trade-offs are practical, too: the manufacturer says it adds 2 mm of thickness, and its stated compatibility with Nintendo’s original dock depends on an included Dock Stick.
What the Basecase offers
Mechanism describes the Basecase as a protective case built around a modular backplate. The case is designed to work with the company’s mount ecosystem, so it can serve as the starting point for a hands-free or differently positioned setup as well as everyday handheld play. Mechanism’s product page lists it for $49 when accessed in 2026; price and availability can change.

Protection and added bulk
Mechanism says the case uses an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell, overmolded rubber edges raised above the screen, and a secure case lock. It lists the added thickness around the console as 2 mm. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent drop-test results, so they describe the design rather than prove how the case performs in a fall.
Two grips and cartridge storage
Two interchangeable ergonomic grips are included, according to Mechanism. Each grip has a hidden compartment for game cartridges. The ability to switch grips is useful if one shape does not suit every play session, but the available product information does not provide hand-size measurements or establish which grip works best for small or medium hands.

Customization and mounts
The case supports interchangeable backplates and 3D-printed grip designs. Mechanism offers design files for free download and remixing, which gives owners a route to personalize the setup if they have access to a 3D printer or suitable community-made parts. The company’s wider Switch 2 catalog includes a Basegrip, Universal Grip, Gaming Pillow and multiple mounts; its mounts are described as compatible across its “innies,” including the Basecase. Will it work with the original Nintendo Switch 2 dock?
Mechanism says the Basecase works with the OEM Nintendo dock when you use the included Dock Stick. Its product page also says the built-in kickstand remains accessible. The Dock Stick is therefore part of the manufacturer’s stated dock-compatible setup, not an optional detail to overlook. Fit and docking were not independently verified here, so check the maker’s instructions if your setup depends on a particular dock arrangement.

Does it solve the travel-cover question?
The product information describes raised edges around the screen, but it does not establish that the Basecase includes a separate cover that protects the display while the console is packed in a bag. If you need full screen coverage during transport, confirm what the case itself covers and whether you will need an additional travel cover before buying. The available product details do not confirm that a separate travel cover is offered.
