java_launcher.dll is a MathWorks launcher component associated with MATLAB and related installation or runtime files. It is not a Windows system DLL and is not the same file as Java’s ordinary java.dll.
Which fix applies to you
- MATLAB will not start: repair or reinstall the same MATLAB release from its original MathWorks installer.
- MATLAB setup fails: restart the installer and repair the incomplete installation.
- MATLAB will not uninstall: use the release-specific MathWorks uninstaller rather than deleting the folder manually.
- A compiled MATLAB application fails: install the matching MATLAB Runtime release and update level.
- The DLL disappeared after a security scan: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency or another installation file may be damaged.
- You downloaded the DLL separately: remove that copy and reinstall the MathWorks product from its trusted installer.
Do not begin by installing ordinary Java, copying the DLL to System32, or downloading a replacement from a DLL website.

1. Repair the affected MathWorks installation
This is the safest and most likely fix because the file belongs to the program that installed it. A matching installer restores the DLL together with its required dependencies, configuration, and release-specific files.
Identify the affected product
- Read the complete error message.
- Note the executable named in the message, such as MATLAB, a setup program, an uninstaller, or a compiled MATLAB application.
- Open File Explorer and inspect the product’s installation folder.
- Search that folder for
java_launcher.dll. - Record whether the file is absent, present in the wrong folder, or present but failing to load.
MathWorks installations commonly place the file under a path similar to:
<MathWorks installation>binwin64java_launcher.dll
The exact folder depends on the product and release. Do not copy a file from another MATLAB installation merely because the filename matches.
Reinstall or repair MATLAB
- Close MATLAB and every MathWorks process.
- Obtain the installer for the same MATLAB release from your MathWorks account or original installation media.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Sign in if requested.
- Select the existing installation when the installer offers repair, update, or installation choices.
- Keep the original installation folder unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Start MATLAB using its normal shortcut.
A successful repair should restore the file to the product’s private bin directory and allow the same MATLAB executable or installer to start. If the installer reports a different release or architecture than the existing product, stop and obtain the matching package instead.
2. If the error occurs during uninstall
A missing launcher can prevent an incomplete MATLAB installation from being removed. Do not delete random DLLs or the entire installation folder first, because that can remove the uninstaller files you still need.
Try the normal Windows route first:
Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select the MATLAB release.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the MathWorks uninstaller prompts.
Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the MATLAB release.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
For newer releases, MathWorks documents an uninstaller command similar to:
"<matlabroot>binwin64MathWorksProductUninstaller.exe" --mode silent
For R2023b and earlier, the uninstaller is generally located at:

"<matlabroot>uninstallbinwin64uninstall.exe"
Replace <matlabroot> with the actual MATLAB installation folder. Open Command Prompt as administrator, paste the appropriate command, and press Enter.
If the uninstaller itself is damaged, use the official MathWorks failed-uninstaller guidance for manual removal, then reinstall cleanly if MATLAB is still required. The correct path depends on the installed release.
3. Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus quarantine is a possible reason the file disappeared after it previously worked.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the MATLAB or MathWorks installation folder.
- If
java_launcher.dllwas quarantined, verify the original path and product before taking action.
Do not restore a DLL solely because its filename looks correct. Restore it only when the original location, MathWorks installation, and installer source are trusted. If you are uncertain, run a full scan and repair the product from its official installer instead.

4. Match the release and architecture
A 32-bit DLL cannot safely replace a 64-bit component, and a file from one MATLAB release is not automatically compatible with another. A 64-bit Windows computer can also run 32-bit application components, so Windows’ architecture alone does not tell you which file is correct.
Some public file metadata lists a 32-bit 12.0.0.0 variant, while public databases also show 64-bit variants. Those listings do not establish which exact MATLAB release shipped each file.
Use these checks:
- Right-click the MATLAB executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Note the product and file information available there.
- Compare it with the installer release you intend to run.
- Keep all MATLAB components from the same release and product family.
Never solve an architecture mismatch by placing the DLL in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those are Windows system directories, not general storage locations for private application DLLs.

5. If a compiled MATLAB application needs MATLAB Runtime
A compiled MATLAB application may require MATLAB Runtime rather than a full MATLAB installation. MATLAB Runtime must match the application’s MATLAB release and update level. Installing a random or newer runtime is not guaranteed to repair the application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm which application is failing.
- Check its deployment instructions or contact the application vendor for the required MATLAB release.
- Download that matching MATLAB Runtime package from MathWorks.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the compiled application again.
Do not assume that every MATLAB Runtime installation contains this exact filename. Verify the application’s required runtime and installation directory first.
6. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
java_launcher.dll is not a standard Windows file, so System File Checker will not normally replace it. DISM and SFC are useful when Windows has broader component corruption, especially if other Windows programs are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry MATLAB or the MathWorks installer.
Success means the commands complete without reporting unrepaired corruption, but this does not guarantee that java_launcher.dll will be restored. If MATLAB alone remains affected, repair MATLAB rather than repeating Windows repairs.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC results or repeating repairs without knowing what changed becomes time-consuming, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the MathWorks product remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that java_launcher.dll is an ActiveX or COM component that should be registered.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 java_launcher.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and will not reconstruct a damaged MATLAB installation.

Likewise, do not:
- copy the file into
System32orSysWOW64; - rename another DLL to
java_launcher.dll; - copy it from a different MATLAB release;
- install Oracle Java or OpenJDK expecting this file to appear;
- install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a substitute for the MathWorks installer.
MATLAB releases may bundle their own Java runtime. Installing ordinary Java does not recreate a missing MathWorks launcher.

8. Update drivers only if the evidence points to a driver problem
A graphics or device driver can affect MATLAB startup, but a missing java_launcher.dll is normally an application-installation problem, not a driver problem. Check drivers only when MATLAB reports a graphics initialization failure, Device Manager shows an error, or other applications using the same device also fail.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and any device category named in the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
When checking every device manually means hunting through multiple vendor packages and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update will not replace a missing MathWorks DLL, so repair MATLAB if the file itself is absent.
9. Use System Restore only as a fallback
If the error began directly after an installation, removal, or security change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may roll back installed programs and system settings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove software installed after the selected restore point. Afterward, repair MATLAB from the matching official installer if necessary.
What not to do
Random DLL download sites cannot prove that their copy matches your MATLAB release, architecture, dependencies, or original installation path. A replacement may contain malware, may be the wrong version, or may merely hide the underlying damaged installation.
The safe sources are the MathWorks installer for your MATLAB release, the official MATLAB Runtime package when a compiled application requires it, and the existing trusted installation media. Manual copying is appropriate only as a controlled recovery from that same trusted source.

FAQ
Is java_launcher.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system component. It is associated with MathWorks software and should remain inside the application’s installation directory.
Is it Java itself?
No. java_launcher.dll is a MathWorks launcher component. Installing a normal Java Runtime Environment does not normally restore it.
Which MathWorks products can contain it?
It is primarily associated with MATLAB setup and installation trees. Related MathWorks products, MATLAB Runtime installations, or compiled MATLAB applications may contain release-specific launcher components, but verify the exact file in the affected product’s directory.
Should I use SFC to restore it?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not private MATLAB files. Use SFC and DISM only when there are signs of broader Windows corruption.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the DLL exists?
The DLL may depend on another missing or damaged file. Reinstalling the complete matching MathWorks product is safer than replacing only java_launcher.dll.
What should I send MathWorks Support?
Provide the full error text, MATLAB release, Windows version, executable path, DLL path, installer or uninstall log, and whether Windows Security reported a quarantine event.
