Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins left Wizards of the Coast and joined Critical Role’s tabletop-publishing division, Darrington Press, in a move announced in June 2025. Perkins is Creative Director; Crawford is Game Director. Their new roles mark a shift from their work on Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards—not an end to Critical Role’s use of D&D.
Did Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins leave D&D?
Yes. After departing Wizards of the Coast, the pair joined Darrington Press, Critical Role’s game-publishing division. The Los Angeles Times described Perkins as having overseen D&D story direction and Crawford as having overseen its rules; those descriptions summarize their work at Wizards rather than define every part of their former jobs. The Los Angeles Times reported the move on June 16, 2025, and GameSpot reported their new titles the following day. GameSpot’s report identifies Perkins as Creative Director and Crawford as Game Director.
Why did they join Critical Role?
Perkins told the Los Angeles Times that the opportunity to work with Crawford and Critical Role’s team brought him out of retirement. Crawford said he was ready for a new adventure after 18 years at Wizards and described the move as a chance to resume working with Perkins and return to Southern California.
Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham told the paper that the two hires were influential names in tabletop role-playing games. The move brings experienced D&D designers into a publisher developing its own tabletop games, but the hiring announcement did not identify a specific new project for either of them.

What are Crawford and Perkins doing at Darrington Press?
Their titles establish broad creative and game-development responsibilities: Perkins is Creative Director, while Crawford is Game Director. Reports from GameSpot and Game Informer say Darrington Press planned to develop new game concepts and expand existing games. GameSpot describes Daggerheart as a released Darrington Press game, but neither report confirms that Crawford or Perkins has been assigned to a particular Daggerheart project or announces a release date for new work.
Are they involved in Critical Role Campaign Four?
Yes, in a specific credited capacity: Critical Role’s official Campaign Four announcement says the campaign uses the 2024 D&D rules and credits Crawford and Perkins with creating custom subclasses. That is a concrete connection to the campaign, but it does not mean they are running it. The announcement names Brennan Lee Mulligan as Game Master and separately lists the cast.
