jnwmon.dll Not Found: Tell Windows Journal From Leftovers

Length8 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this quick diagnosis

Before replacing anything, note:

  • Which program or executable shows the error
  • Whether it appears at startup, during printing, or when opening an old document
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, restore, cleanup, or antivirus detection

jnwmon.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file called the Windows Journal Port Monitor DLL. It belongs to the old Windows Journal and Journal Note Writer printing component, not to a modern game, Visual C++ package, DirectX, or .NET runtime.

The important detail is that Windows Journal was intentionally removed from supported Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 versions because the .JNT file format had security vulnerabilities. Therefore, a missing file on Windows 10 version 1607 or later, Windows 11, or another current release may indicate an obsolete caller rather than damaged Windows.

What jnwmon.dll does

A port monitor is part of the Windows printing path. It helps a printer-related component communicate with the operating system and, in this case, was associated with Journal Note Writer. That printer allowed applications to create Windows Journal files.

Microsoft’s Windows Journal security-update file tables list jnwmon.dll with related files including jnwdrv.dll, jnwdui.dll, and jnwppr.dll for older Windows releases such as Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and corresponding Windows Server editions. The component had different x86 and x64 builds.

That history explains why the error can come from several places:

  • Windows Journal itself
  • Journal Note Writer
  • A leftover Journal printer or driver
  • A startup entry from software that was removed incompletely
  • A damaged older Windows installation
  • An application that incorrectly expects the obsolete component

The dialog may say “jnwmon.dll is missing,” “was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “is either not designed to run on Windows.” The first missing file is not always the true cause. Another Journal or printing dependency may be damaged or absent.

Fix 1: Identify and remove the obsolete caller

This is the safest first fix on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the program named in the error

If the dialog identifies an application:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Disable an entry clearly associated with old Journal software, a removed printer utility, or an unknown program that appeared when the problem started.
  4. Open Settings with Windows+I.
  5. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  6. Search for Journal, Journal Note Writer, old printer software, or the application named in the error.
  7. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  8. Restart Windows.

If the error no longer appears, the caller was stale software rather than a DLL that needed manual replacement.

Check printers

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
  3. Remove an obsolete Journal printer or a printer belonging to software you no longer use.
  4. Restart the computer.

For a deeper driver check:

  1. Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Print queues and Printers.
  3. Right-click an obsolete Journal-related device or driver.
  4. Choose Uninstall device.
  5. If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
  6. Restart.

Do not remove a printer you still need unless you have its current installer or Windows can reinstall it.

If the message names a game or unrelated application, do not assume that application legitimately needs jnwmon.dll. Check its startup entry and installed components first. A modern game normally should not depend on Windows Journal.

Fix 2: Repair the application that is requesting it

If a particular program still legitimately needs an older Journal component, repair that complete program rather than copying one DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings with Windows+I.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Select its three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the program.
  8. If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
  9. If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer, using the release that matches your Windows architecture.

If the program is an old Journal package, reinstalling only the application may still be inappropriate on modern Windows because Microsoft removed the underlying component. In that case, remove the caller and preserve the documents with a supported alternative.

Fix 3: Repair Windows files on an older supported installation

Use this path when the computer is an older Windows installation that originally included Windows Journal, or when the error began after an update, rollback, restore, or servicing failure.

First install pending updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart, even if Windows does not insist.
  6. Check again until no further updates are offered.

Then repair the component store and protected system files.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Run SFC separately:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the program again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files and can restore a valid copy from that store. Running SFC first is a common mistake when the store itself is damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through different Windows builds and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed is time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the responsible Journal application remains the definitive fix when that application is the real caller.

If SFC cannot repair the files

Run DISM first, restart, and repeat:

sfc /scannow

If DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching Windows installation source and Microsoft’s documented /Source and /LimitAccess procedure. The source must match the installed Windows release and architecture. Do not use a random DLL as a substitute for a damaged component store.

For offline recovery:

  1. Boot into Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Open Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Command Prompt.
  3. Determine the Windows drive letter because it may not be C:.
  4. Use Microsoft’s offline DISM and SFC syntax with /offbootdir and /offwindir.
  5. Restart and test Windows normally.

Fix 4: Handle antivirus quarantine carefully

Security software may quarantine an old Journal component because Windows Journal and the .JNT format have a poor security history. This is a possible cause, not proof of a particular antivirus false positive.

  1. Open your antivirus application.
  2. Open Quarantine, Protection history, or Detected threats.
  3. Inspect the detection path, publisher, and detection details.
  4. Do not restore the file merely because an error dialog requests it.
  5. Update Windows and the security software.
  6. Run a full scan, or an offline scan if you suspect malware.
  7. Restore a quarantined file only when it is confirmed to be a genuine Microsoft file from the correct Windows installation and the associated component is still required.

If Windows Journal was intentionally removed, leave the file quarantined or remove the obsolete application requesting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check architecture and avoid mismatched files

A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit Journal component even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit installation may also contain architecture-specific copies in protected Windows locations. The correct binary depends on the exact Windows build and architecture.

To check your system:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then About.
  3. Check System type.
  4. Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Do not copy a file from another computer simply because its filename matches. A mismatched build can produce “not designed to run on Windows,” a dependent-module error, or a new printing failure.

Do not place downloaded copies in System32, SysWOW64, the application folder, or the current directory. That can create DLL search-order and architecture problems while leaving the underlying caller unchanged.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related printer drivers

Use this only when the error clearly occurs during printing or after a printer software change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Advanced options, then Optional updates.
  4. Install appropriate driver updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. If the printer vendor provides a current driver, download it only from the vendor’s official support page.
  7. In Device Manager, expand Print queues and Printers.
  8. Right-click the affected printer and choose Update driver or Uninstall device.
  9. Restart and install the current complete printer package.

Manually checking several printer models and guessing which driver is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan detects; driver installation is performed by the full version, while the printer manufacturer’s official package remains the proper source for a specific device.

Should you run regsvr32?

Usually, no.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration exports such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command. jnwmon.dll is a Windows Journal port-monitor component, not a normal ActiveX control or COM library, and Microsoft does not instruct users to register it manually.

Running this command is therefore not a recommended fix:

regsvr32 jnwmon.dll

An error from regsvr32 does not prove that the file is corrupt. It may simply mean the DLL is not designed for manual registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you download jnwmon.dll?

No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or an isolated file that is missing its companion Journal components. Copying it into a system folder can also make future repairs harder.

Use supported sources instead:

  • Windows Update
  • DISM and SFC
  • Matching Windows installation media
  • System Restore
  • An in-place Windows repair
  • The official installer for the application or printer component that requested the file

If the issue began immediately after a known update and a restore point predates it:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Search for Recovery.
  3. Select Open System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  5. Review affected applications and drivers.
  6. Start the restore and restart Windows.

System Restore can roll back applications, drivers, and updates, so use it only when the timing is clear.

If repairs fail on a supported Windows installation, an in-place repair using matching installation media can refresh Windows while preserving personal data and, depending on the chosen option, applications. Back up important files first.

What to do with old .JNT files

Do not reinstall obsolete Journal software solely to open an old document on a modern Windows release.

Microsoft recommended using OneNote or its Journal-to-OneNote converter for preserving old Journal documents. Keep an untouched backup of the original .JNT files before attempting conversion, and use Microsoft’s current guidance for the Windows and OneNote versions available to you.

FAQ

Is jnwmon.dll a legitimate file?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows Journal Port Monitor DLL associated with the legacy Windows Journal and Journal Note Writer components.

Does Windows 11 need jnwmon.dll?

Normally, no. Windows Journal was removed from modern supported Windows versions. An error on Windows 11 usually points to obsolete software, a leftover printer configuration, or an incorrect startup entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it a virus?

The filename alone cannot prove that. Check the file’s location, digital signature, antivirus details, and whether it belongs to a matching Windows installation. If the file is in an unexpected application folder, scan the system before restoring anything.

Why did the error appear after an uninstall?

The uninstall may have left a startup entry, printer configuration, scheduled task, or application dependency that still requests the removed component. Remove the leftover caller instead of restoring the DLL.

Can a 32-bit DLL work on 64-bit Windows?

Only in the correct context. A 32-bit caller may require a 32-bit component, and a 64-bit caller requires a compatible 64-bit build. Repair the complete component rather than mixing files.

What if the error returns at every boot?

Check Startup apps, installed applications, scheduled tasks, and printers for leftover Journal-related software. Disable or remove the caller, then restart and confirm that the message is gone.
