Jötunnslayer: Hordes of Hel Crashing on Steam Deck: What to Try

Steam Deck Verified is not a crash guarantee for Jötunnslayer: Hordes of Hel. Here’s what official patch notes establish, which low-risk checks you can try, and what to include in a bug report.

Steam currently labels Jötunnslayer: Hordes of Hel Steam Deck Verified, but that status is not a guarantee against crashes on every game build or device. Official patch notes document fixes for specific bugs—including a Stygia-related freeze for some players—but do not identify a universal Steam Deck crash fix. Start with updates and compatibility details, try only reversible troubleshooting steps, and report repeat crashes with the information the developer requests.

What Steam Deck Verified does—and does not—mean

The game’s Steam store listing currently shows Steam Deck Verified. Valve describes Verified games as working great on Deck out of the box, based on checks such as controller support, readable text at the default Deck resolution, and compatibility with Proton or required middleware. Valve also says its compatibility review process is ongoing, so the label is an assessment—not a promise that every update, configuration, or individual Deck will be crash-free. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility explanation.

What the official patch notes say about crashes and freezes

The game’s official Steam announcements and patch notes record fixes for particular issues, not a blanket Steam Deck crash solution. Hotfix 0.4.3 fixed control rebinding and overlapping text on Steam Deck; those were Deck-specific issues, but the notes do not describe them as crash fixes.

Other notes document a freeze affecting some players immediately after summoning a boss in Stygia, fixed in Hotfix 1.2.2. Hotfix 1.2.1 separately mentioned ongoing investigation of save issues and a Stygia boss issue. The notes do not establish that these were the same bug or that either was a Deck-wide crash. No official source identifies a particular Proton version as the fix for this game’s crashes.

Try these low-risk checks, one at a time

First note when the crash happens: on launch, while loading, during a run, or immediately after a particular action. The timing is useful diagnostic information, but available documentation does not tie each timing pattern to a confirmed cause.

  1. Check for a game update. Open the game’s Steam page or Library entry and check whether an update is pending. Also review the current Steam Deck compatibility details. A recent update can change behavior, and Verified status alone cannot rule out a new regression.
  2. Test another Proton version only if you are comfortable changing compatibility settings. A third-party troubleshooting guide suggests trying different Proton builds, but this is general advice—not a confirmed remedy for Jötunnslayer. Record the original setting, make one change, and test whether the same crash recurs. Revert if the result is worse. See the third-party troubleshooting guide.
  3. Verify the installed game files. This is another generic suggestion from that guide, not an officially confirmed game-specific fix. In Steam, open the game’s properties and use the installed-files option to verify file integrity. Let the check finish, then test again before changing anything else.
  4. Reduce graphics settings as a diagnostic check. The third-party guide also suggests lowering graphics settings. Note the starting settings, change one at a time, and see whether the crash pattern changes. Do not treat improvement or no change as proof of a particular cause.

These checks are optional and reversible. The available official notes do not establish a universally best Proton build or graphics preset across Deck models and game builds.

How to report a crash that keeps happening

If the crash repeats, send the developer information that can distinguish a reproducible game issue from a device- or build-specific problem. Follow the developer’s bug-report instructions, and check for an existing report before posting.

  • Where you were playing: desktop, laptop, Steam Deck, or GeForce NOW.
  • The game Build ID and your system specifications, especially for performance issues.
  • What you were doing immediately before the crash, including the location or action if relevant.
  • Whether it happens every time or only occasionally, and the steps that reproduce it.
  • The game’s Player.log, as requested in the developer’s instructions.

For support questions, Steam Support lists [email protected] as the publisher’s contact. Include your report details rather than assuming Verified status rules out a game issue.

Why the posted PC requirements are not a Deck crash diagnosis

The Steam listing names Windows 10 64-bit as the minimum operating system and lists 15 GB of storage. Those are the posted PC requirements, not a tested Steam Deck configuration or an explanation for a specific crash. Valve’s Verified assessment and the game’s PC requirements answer different questions: one describes compatibility checks for Deck play; the other lists the stated PC requirements.
