What jpeg2x32.dll belongs to
The file’s recorded description is JPEG2 LIBRARY. Historical installations commonly included related files such as:
jpeg1x32.dlloieng400.dlloiprt400.dlloislb400.dlloissq400.dlloitwa400.dlloiui400.dlltifflt.dll
That group is useful when identifying the parent application. A program that contains several of these files is more likely to be the correct installation to repair.
The file is a historical 32-bit library. A 64-bit version of Windows can run it through WOW64, but the application calling it must also be 32-bit. A 64-bit replacement is not an appropriate substitute.

Find the application that requested the file
Repair the application that owns the missing file, not whichever program happens to be open when the error appears.
Check the error window
Read the first line of the error carefully. If it names an executable, search for that program in these locations:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the application’s installation folders for the executable.
- Right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record the product name, file description, and product version.
Do not assume that the newest-looking imaging program is responsible. Multiple legacy imaging products can coexist.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Imaging, Kodak, the scanner vendor, or the product named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Apps & features.
- Select the suspected imaging program.
- Choose Modify or Uninstall.
You can also open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features and inspect the installed-program list there.
If the application has already been removed but a shortcut or startup entry still launches it, remove the obsolete entry or reinstall the complete application first.

Fix 1: Repair Imaging for Windows or the parent application
This is the most likely solution.
Use the original Imaging for Windows installer, the deployment package supplied by your organization, or the legitimate installer for the document-imaging product that included the file. Current vendor support for this product lineage is associated with OpenText, but the correct package depends on the exact product and release.
For Imaging for Windows 4.0, the documented repair sequence is:
- Start the original installer.
- At Program Maintenance, select Repair.
- Select Next.
- Select Install.
- Select Finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected application.
The installer should restore the matching group of files to the application’s own installation directory. It should not place jpeg2x32.dll in a general Windows system folder.
If the installer has no Repair option
Use the installer’s complete reinstall path:
- Back up documents and application settings if the product supports them.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as administrator.
- Reinstall all required imaging components.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program using the same document or workflow that produced the error.
If the program is business-critical and the installer is unavailable, obtain the package from your organization’s software archive, licensed vendor support, or original deployment media. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from an unauthorised file repository.
A successful repair usually means the application opens without the loader message and can load the image or document that previously failed. If a new error names another companion DLL, the installation is probably incomplete or the application is using files from different releases.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the file. Do not assume that a missing file was a false positive.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the event related to the application or DLL.
- Record the detected path, detection name, and action taken.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the trusted imaging application.
- Scan the installer and the surrounding application files before restoring anything.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can allow a genuine threat to run. Restore it only when the file came from a trusted, intact application installation and the detection has been verified as a false positive. Otherwise, reinstall the complete application from a clean official source.
If the file is quarantined again immediately after reinstalling, stop restoring it repeatedly. Update Windows Security, run a full scan, and investigate the installer or application directory.
Fix 3: Check for an incomplete migration or old startup entry
The error may appear even though you no longer use the original imaging program. A startup task, document association, shell extension, or shortcut can continue launching an old executable.

Check these areas:
Startup applications
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Startup.
- Look for the old imaging application or an unknown entry.
- Turn off an entry only when you can identify it as the obsolete program.
- Restart Windows.
Task Scheduler
- Press Windows key, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks that launch the old imaging executable.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see its executable path.
- Disable or remove the task only if it belongs to an application you have removed.
File associations
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Default apps.
- Search for the affected file extension.
- Assign it to a supported current application, or reinstall the legacy application if it is still required.
If the error began after a PC migration or partial upgrade, reinstall the complete parent application rather than copying individual files from the old computer.

Fix 4: Confirm the architecture and version match
jpeg2x32.dll is a historical 32-bit library. The following arrangement is valid:
- 64-bit Windows
- 32-bit imaging application
- Matching 32-bit Imaging for Windows files
The following arrangements are unsafe:
- A DLL taken from a different Imaging for Windows release
- A file copied from another computer without confirming the application version
- A 64-bit file substituted for a 32-bit dependency
- A file placed in a Windows system directory to change the DLL search order
A mismatched file can change the error from “missing” to:
- Entry point not found
- Bad image
- The module was not designed to run on Windows
- The procedure entry point could not be located
If the application’s own installer restores a file and the error changes, do not mix files from separate packages. Remove the incomplete installation and reinstall the complete parent product.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
DISM and SFC are not the primary fix for an application-private copy of jpeg2x32.dll. Use them when several Windows features are failing, system files are damaged, or the problem began with broader Windows corruption.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the imaging application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC can repair protected Windows files, but it will not reliably recreate a DLL that belongs only to an old application.
Repeating these commands without checking what changed rarely helps when only one legacy program is affected. If DISM reports that the component store cannot be repaired, use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair path appropriate to your Windows installation. Do not download jpeg2x32.dll as a replacement for a damaged Windows image.
Fix 6: Do not install unrelated runtimes
Installing common runtimes is unlikely to restore this file.
jpeg2x32.dll has not been identified as part of:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- A modern graphics driver package
- A current Windows multimedia component
Install or repair one of those runtimes only when the application separately reports a missing runtime DLL or its documented requirements call for it. Installing every Visual C++ architecture or every DirectX package is not a targeted fix for jpeg2x32.dll.

Fix 7: Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not manually place this application DLL in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for application DLLs.
The correct location is normally the directory belonging to the application that calls the file. The application installer knows which companion files, registry settings, and version-specific dependencies are required.
Fix 8: Do not register jpeg2x32.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that jpeg2x32.dll is a COM or ActiveX server.

Use registration only when the application vendor specifically documents it for the exact build. A JPEG library is normally loaded by its parent application, not registered as a system component.

A scanner or imaging application may have a separate driver problem, but replacing a scanner driver will not normally recreate jpeg2x32.dll.
If the application also cannot see the scanner:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Device status message.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from the scanner or device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Avoid replacing a working device driver merely because the DLL error appears. System Restore may help when the error began immediately after a driver change, software installation, or system modification.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally removing personal files. It will not reliably restore an application that was never installed correctly, so repair or reinstall the imaging product afterward if necessary.
Should you download jpeg2x32.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites sites can provide:
- Malware
- The wrong release
- The wrong architecture
- A file with altered metadata
- A DLL that does not match its companion libraries
Even a clean file with the correct name may not fix the parent application. It can also create new loader or entry-point errors.

Use the original application installer, your organization’s deployment media, legitimate vendor support, or the product’s supported installation package. Restore a quarantined file only after verifying its path and provenance.
