smptegenerator.dll: Restore Steinberg SMPTE Generator on Windows

smptegenerator.dll is a Steinberg VST plug-in component used by the SMPTE Generator tool in Cubase and Nuendo. It is not a Windows system file, so the correct fix is normally to repair the Steinberg installation rather than copy a DLL into System32.

SMPTE Generator outputs SMPTE timecode through an audio output so compatible external equipment can synchronize with the host. Steinberg documents it as an included tool in Nuendo and Cubase Pro editions. Availability can depend on the product edition and host generation.

Fix smptegenerator.dll in the right order

Work through these steps in sequence. The first fix is the most likely to restore the plug-in.

1. Repair or reinstall Cubase or Nuendo

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the installer

#1 Best Overall
Yamaha 2-in/2-out USB-C Audio/MIDI Interface with 32-bit/192kHz Support, 2 combo Inputs, DSP-Powered Mixing/Effects, Steinberg Software Suite, Black URX22C
  • 32-bit Integer/192 kHz USB 3.0 audio interface with 2 x 2 analog I/O and MIDI I/O
  • 2 analog XLR/TRS combo inputs with Class-A D-PRE mic preamps supporting +48 V phantom power and one Hi-Z and 2 TRS main outputs
  • Rugged full-metal housing for ultimate durability
  • Latency-free DSP-powered monitoring with REV-X reverb, Channel Strip, and Guitar Amp Classics (VST 3 and AU plug-in versions also included)
  • Cross-platform compatibility for Windows, macOS and iOS with Cubase AI, Steinberg Plus, and dspMixFx application included

If the error names smptegenerator.dll itself, the Steinberg installation is incomplete, damaged, or missing the plug-in. This can happen after an update, an interrupted installation, disk cleanup, manual deletion, or moving the program folder.

Before starting, close Cubase, Nuendo, Steinberg Activation Manager, and other Steinberg applications. Back up projects and any custom presets before uninstalling software.

Try Steinberg Download Assistant first

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for Steinberg Download Assistant.
  3. Open it and sign in to the account associated with the Cubase or Nuendo license.
  4. Find the installed Cubase or Nuendo product.
  5. Select Install again, if that option is available.
  6. Choose the same product generation and edition already installed.
  7. Allow the installer to finish.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Launch Cubase or Nuendo and check whether SMPTE Generator is available.

An install-again operation is preferable to downloading an isolated DLL because it restores the plug-in together with the files and prerequisites expected by that particular host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Download Assistant does not list the product, use the original Steinberg installer or the official Steinberg download source for that product. This matters for older Cubase and Nuendo releases, which may require a legacy installer and license.

Perform a conventional reinstall

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. In Programs and Features, select the affected Cubase or Nuendo installation.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Follow the uninstall wizard.
  6. Restart Windows when prompted.
  7. Run the original official installer or the compatible Steinberg installer.
  8. Install the latest update available for that product generation.
  9. Open the host and rescan or reload the plug-ins.

Do not remove project files, audio files, preferences, or personal content unless the Steinberg instructions for your product specifically require it. A standard application reinstall should be tried before deleting user settings.

How to tell whether this worked

The error should disappear when Cubase or Nuendo starts, scans plug-ins, or opens the affected project. In the host, look for SMPTE Generator among the available tool or plug-in options.

If the plug-in is still absent, confirm that the installed edition includes it. Steinberg documentation identifies SMPTE Generator with Nuendo and Cubase Pro, so do not assume that every Cubase edition contains the same tool set.

2. Check Windows Security Protection History

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file. This is especially likely if the plug-in disappeared suddenly even though Cubase or Nuendo had been working previously.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Look for an entry associated with the Steinberg installation or smptegenerator.dll.
  7. Open the detection to review its location and details.

Only restore the file if all of the following are true:

  • Two combo inputs with mute button, Class A mic preamps and phantom power, plus one Hi-Z input
  • Latency-free hardware monitoring and separate headphone output
  • ST-M01 studio condenser microphone with low-noise microphone cable plus ST-H01 studio monitor headphones
  • Cross-platform compatibility with Windows, macOS and iOS, plus Cubase AI, Cubasis LE, and WaveLab LE included
  • It was located inside the legitimate Steinberg installation.
  • The Cubase or Nuendo installation came from Steinberg.
  • You recognize the product and path.
  • You have no other reason to suspect that the file or installer was tampered with.

Microsoft documents the Restore and, where available, Allow on device actions in its guide to Protection History.

If the detection is unclear, do not whitelist the file. Remove or leave the item quarantined, then reinstall Cubase or Nuendo from Steinberg. Reinstalling replaces the file from a known source and avoids restoring a potentially altered copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After restoring or reinstalling, launch the Steinberg host and run a security scan. If the file is detected again, stop using that copy and investigate the installer and system before adding an antivirus exclusion.

3. Check whether the host and plug-in architecture match

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch can prevent a plug-in from loading even when the file exists. Older Cubase releases supported older plug-in arrangements, while later releases increasingly require 64-bit plug-ins. Compatibility also depends on the host generation and plug-in format.

Check the host architecture as follows:

  1. Open Cubase or Nuendo if it starts.
  2. Open its Help menu.
  3. Choose About or About Cubase/Nuendo.
  4. Note the product version and whether it identifies itself as 32-bit or 64-bit.

If the host does not start, right-click its shortcut and select Properties. The shortcut alone may not clearly identify the architecture, so check the product documentation or the installer name as well.

Then check the plug-in installation and scan configuration in the host:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the host’s Studio, Devices, or Plug-in Manager area, depending on the product generation.
  2. Review the configured VST plug-in paths.
  3. Confirm that the original Steinberg installation location has not been removed or replaced.
  4. Rescan plug-ins if the host provides a rescan command.
  5. Restart the host.

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit plug-in folder and expect the host to convert it. Do not copy a 64-bit file into Windows system directories to bypass an architecture mismatch.

If an older project was created with a different Cubase or Nuendo generation, test a new empty project. If the new project loads normally but the older project fails, the project may reference an unavailable plug-in or an incompatible host configuration.

4. Determine whether the file is missing or a dependency is missing

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

A message such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that smptegenerator.dll itself is absent. The named file may exist while one of its dependent runtime DLLs is missing.

First, check the Steinberg installation folder identified by your product’s installer or shortcut. Search for smptegenerator.dll using File Explorer. Do not treat a copy found in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder as the correct copy.

There are two different outcomes:

  • The file is absent: repair or reinstall Cubase/Nuendo using Fix 1.
  • The file exists but fails to load: read the entire error and identify whether another DLL is named.

If the error identifies a runtime file such as MSVCP140.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll, repair or install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.

Choose the architecture that matches the application, not merely the architecture of Windows. A 32-bit host can require the x86 package on 64-bit Windows. Older redistributables can remain installed alongside newer ones, so do not remove existing packages without a specific reason.

Restart Windows after installing or repairing the runtime, then launch Cubase or Nuendo again. If the message still names smptegenerator.dll, return to the Steinberg repair step. Microsoft runtime packages do not replace Steinberg’s plug-in binary.

5. Restore the original plug-in path and rescan

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

A file can be present but invisible to the host if the plug-in path changed. This can follow a drive-letter change, a manual move of the Steinberg program folder, or a cleanup operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Cubase or Nuendo.
  2. Open the host’s plug-in manager or plug-in path settings.
  3. Review the listed VST paths.
  4. Remove a path only if you know it is invalid.
  5. Add the original Steinberg path if it was removed.
  6. Save the settings.
  7. Use the host’s rescan function.
  8. Restart the host.

The exact menu names vary between Cubase and Nuendo generations. Avoid adding every folder on the computer as a plug-in path. Broad scans can create duplicate entries and introduce unrelated plug-ins into the host.

If the host has a plug-in blacklist or failed-scan list, clear only the relevant entry using the product’s own plug-in manager. Do not delete all preferences or caches unless you have backed them up and the Steinberg instructions for that product recommend doing so.

6. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Steinberg VST plug-in, so they should not be the first response to a missing smptegenerator.dll.

Use them when the DLL error appears alongside broader Windows problems, such as damaged built-in applications, failed system updates, or multiple unrelated system-file errors.

  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test Cubase or Nuendo again.

Microsoft provides the full procedure in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

DISM should run before SFC because SFC may use the repaired Windows component store. If both commands report no integrity violations, they have not repaired the Steinberg plug-in, and you should return to the official application reinstall.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is a damaged Cubase installation.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows repair results: its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Cubase or Nuendo remains the definitive fix when this specific plug-in is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Update drivers only if the error points to a driver problem

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

A display, audio, or chipset driver is not normally the cause of a missing Steinberg plug-in. Do not start with Device Manager unless Cubase or Nuendo also crashes when opening an audio device, loses its interface, or reports a driver-related error.

If the symptoms point to an audio driver:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the audio interface or sound device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Open the audio device settings in Cubase or Nuendo and test again.

For a hardware-specific driver, use the audio interface or computer manufacturer’s official support source. Do not replace smptegenerator.dll with a driver download.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as stale, avoiding the process of checking many devices by hand; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace a missing Steinberg plug-in.

8. Do not register smptegenerator.dll with regsvr32

Time needed: 1 minute

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the COM self-registration entry point required by that process. A VST plug-in is normally discovered and loaded by the audio host, not registered as a Windows COM component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run:

regsvr32 smptegenerator.dll

A failed regsvr32 message does not prove that the file is corrupt. It usually means that registration is not supported or is not appropriate for that DLL. Use the Steinberg installer and the host’s plug-in scan instead.

Why smptegenerator.dll errors happen

The likely causes are specific to the relationship between the host and its plug-in:

Cause Typical clue Appropriate response
Incomplete or damaged installation The file itself is missing Repair or reinstall Cubase/Nuendo
Antivirus quarantine The file disappeared suddenly Review Protection History, then reinstall if uncertain
Architecture mismatch The file exists but the host rejects it Use a compatible host and plug-in generation
Missing dependency The message names another DLL Repair the identified runtime
Changed plug-in path The file exists outside configured scan paths Restore the path and rescan
Windows corruption Several unrelated Windows components fail Run DISM, then SFC
Removed host An old shortcut or project still references Cubase/Nuendo Remove the stale reference or reinstall the required host

The problem may begin after uninstalling or updating Cubase or Nuendo, moving the Steinberg folder, changing from 32-bit to 64-bit software, restoring an old project on a newer host, running disk cleanup, or manually deleting files. The point at which the error appears also matters: startup, plug-in scanning, and project loading can indicate different causes.

What not to do

Do not download smptegenerator.dll from a random DLL repository. An arbitrary copy may contain malware, belong to a different Steinberg product generation, use the wrong architecture, or fail because its dependencies and host installation are still missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not place the file in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • A random application folder
  • A plug-in folder unrelated to the Steinberg installation

There is no verified basis for treating smptegenerator.dll as a Windows component, and no universal file size, hash, version, or installation path should be assumed. Use Steinberg’s official installer or Download Assistant instead.

When the error still remains

Record these details before contacting Steinberg support or troubleshooting further:

  1. The exact Cubase or Nuendo product and version.
  2. The Windows version.
  3. Whether Windows and the host are 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. The complete error text.
  5. Whether the error appears at startup, during scanning, or when opening a project.
  6. Whether smptegenerator.dll exists and its full path.
  7. Whether antivirus recently quarantined it.
  8. Whether the issue started after an update, uninstall, cleanup, or folder move.
  9. Whether another DLL is named in the error or Windows event log.
  10. Whether a new empty project behaves differently from the affected project.

This information distinguishes a missing plug-in from a dependency failure or an unsupported host configuration.

FAQ

Is smptegenerator.dll part of Windows?

No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with Steinberg’s SMPTE Generator VST plug-in for supported Cubase and Nuendo installations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which programs include it?

Documented examples include Nuendo and Cubase Pro. Availability depends on the product edition and generation, so check the features and plug-in reference for the exact host.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. The plug-in should remain with the Steinberg installation and be loaded by Cubase or Nuendo through the host’s plug-in system.

Should I run regsvr32?

Normally no. VST plug-ins are not generally fixed by COM registration.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?

Only if the error identifies a missing runtime dependency or the Steinberg installer requires that runtime. It does not replace smptegenerator.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore the file?

No. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not a third-party Steinberg plug-in. Use it only when there is evidence of wider Windows component corruption.

What if Cubase was removed?

Reinstall the required Cubase or Nuendo version from the official Steinberg installer source. If an old shortcut or project still references the removed host, remove that stale reference or restore the compatible application.

What is the safest fix?

Repair or reinstall the exact Steinberg product that supplied SMPTE Generator, then confirm the host architecture, plug-in path, and edition are compatible.
