Dredd as a viewpoint on power
Dredd’s defining trait is professional certainty. He rarely doubts that the Justice Department must maintain order, but the stories repeatedly test what that certainty costs ordinary citizens. His effectiveness can look admirable during a disaster and frightening when the same powers are applied to dissent, poverty or political disagreement. The satire works because the narrative allows the system to be efficient, ridiculous and morally dangerous at once.

What is Mega-City One like?
Mega-City One is Dredd’s home and the principal stage for the strip’s social satire. The anniversary primer frames it as a crime-ridden American East Coast megalopolis. Rebellion’s current shop description uses a different formulation, calling it a post-apocalyptic North American metropolis. Both descriptions point to the same essential idea: an enormous future city in which millions of people live under permanent pressure from crime, disaster, crowding and authoritarian administration. The city is not merely scenery behind a police adventure. Its scale creates the problems that make Dredd stories distinctive. A single block can function like a small town, while a citywide emergency can affect an unimaginable population. High-density housing, automated services, bizarre subcultures and heavily armed Judges give writers room to move from intimate investigations to apocalyptic events without leaving the same setting.
Why population figures need attribution
Published official descriptions do not agree on one stable population number. The 2017 anniversary primer says Mega-City One has more than 72 million people; Rebellion’s current shop copy says more than 180 million citizens. Those figures come from different pages and are not safely combinable into a single canon statistic. Treat them as source-specific descriptions rather than a definitive number.

The Justice Department
Judges are the city’s governing law-enforcement institution. Their authority explains why Dredd can act as patrol officer, detective, prosecutor and sentencing authority within one narrative. It also supplies the setting’s central ethical conflict: when the institution is designed to prevent disorder at any cost, legality and justice can diverge.
For players coming from games, think of Mega-City One less as a conventional open-world backdrop and more as a rule system imposed on a whole society. The interesting questions are not only where a mission happens, but who wrote the rules, who can challenge them and what happens when the rules produce an obviously cruel result.

Which supporting characters help explain Dredd’s world?
The wider cast gives readers alternatives to Dredd’s institutional viewpoint. The 2000AD.org character index lists figures from Judge Dredd’s world, including Judge Anderson and Judge Hershey. Judge Anderson

Judge Death
Judge Death is an important antagonist in Dredd’s mythology and is specifically named in the Biker Mice crossover listing.
