kbd106.dll is a protected Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component for the Japanese 106-key layout, not a Visual C++ runtime or game DLL. If it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC rather than downloading a replacement from a random DLL site.
What this file actually does
Microsoft identifies kbd106 as the Japanese 106 keyboard layout. Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through the window manager when the corresponding input layout is needed. The file contains the layout information Windows uses to translate keyboard scancodes into keys and characters. Microsoft’s keyboard-layout documentation

Typical metadata describes the file as:
- Description:
JP Japanese Keyboard Layout for 106 - Internal name: commonly
kbd106 - Company: Microsoft Corporation
- Product: Microsoft Windows Operating System
- Typical location:
%windir%System32
The exact file location, version, size, and architecture depend on the Windows edition, build, servicing state, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit. A related file named kbd106n.dll is a separate Japanese 106-layout file. Do not rename one file to the other or use it as a substitute.
An application may mention kbd106.dll even though the application does not own the file. Windows may be loading the layout while the program starts, changes input methods, or opens a text field. Some programs also incorrectly hard-code a system dependency or ship an incomplete dependency list. The name appearing in the error does not prove that the program should contain its own copy.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows Update is the safest first repair source because it can restore servicing components and protected Windows files without you choosing a file manually.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Reopen the application that reported
kbd106.dll.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
If the error started immediately after an update and Windows now reports that it cannot repair the component, continue with DISM and SFC instead of repeatedly retrying the application.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged or missing copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for system-file problems. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait until the command finishes. Do not close the window because progress can pause for a while.
- Restart Windows after DISM completes.
Run SFC
After the restart:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the affected program and, if relevant, switch to the Japanese 106 keyboard layout.
A successful SFC result normally states that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If SFC repaired files, restart before testing.
If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, install pending updates, restart, and run the command again. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again and then run SFC once more. Persistent failures point to a damaged Windows installation, storage trouble, malware, or a problem outside kbd106.dll.
When you are repeatedly hunting through repair commands and cannot tell which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the issue and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows can see the file
Do not use a downloaded copy to test the result. First check the Windows directories from an elevated Command Prompt.
Run:
where /r "%windir%System32" kbd106.dll
where /r "%windir%SysWOW64" kbd106.dll
The first command searches beneath the normal 64-bit system directory. The second searches the 32-bit system directory used by 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows.

Possible outcomes:
- A path is returned: Windows can find a file with that name in the searched directory.
INFO: Could not find files for the given pattern(s).: the file was not found in that directory.- A file exists but the application still fails: the file may be damaged, the process may require another architecture, the layout registration may be damaged, or the application may be reporting a different missing dependency.
Finding the file does not prove that it is the correct build or that it is safe. Windows servicing, DISM, and SFC are the appropriate ways to restore a protected system component.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries through Windows-on-Windows 64 redirection. The directories are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation
Fix 4: Re-add the Japanese keyboard layout
If Japanese input is required, the language feature or keyboard layout may be missing even when Windows itself is healthy.
Add Japanese in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for Japanese.
- Select Japanese, then select Next.
- Review the optional language features.
- Select Install.
- After installation, select the three-dot menu beside Japanese.
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the required Japanese keyboard layout.
Add Japanese in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Select Add a preferred language.
- Search for and select Japanese.
- Select Next, review the features, and select Install.
- Select the Japanese language entry.
- Select Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose the required layout.
Microsoft’s instructions for managing language and keyboard input layouts are available in its keyboard and language settings guidance.
Sign out or restart after adding the layout, then use the input-language control on the taskbar to select Japanese. If adding the language fails, return to Fix 1 and Fix 2. A language-layout problem should not be solved by downloading a DLL manually.

Antivirus software can quarantine a modified or suspicious file. It can also identify a file incorrectly, but restoring it without verification is unsafe.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection that names
kbd106.dllor a related keyboard component. - Read the detection details and file path.
- Do not select Restore unless you have verified that the detection is a false positive and the file came from a trusted Windows installation.
- If the file was restored, run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device. Microsoft’s Protection history guidance
If the detection points to an application directory rather than a Windows directory, treat the application as the primary suspect. Remove or repair the application, run a full security scan, and do not whitelist the file simply to make the error disappear.
Fix 6: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports kbd106.dll, the program may be using an incorrect dependency reference, an incompatible input component, or its own damaged files.

Repair a Microsoft Store application
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu or select the application entry.
- Select Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that the application’s local data may be removed.
Repair a desktop application
- Open Start > Settings > Apps.
- Select the installed application.
- Select Modify, Change, or Repair if the publisher provides that option.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists:
- Close the application.
- Download a current installer only from the application’s official publisher.
- Uninstall the affected application through Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the official version.
- Test it before adding third-party keyboard utilities or plug-ins.
Reinstalling the program is the definitive fix when the program ships its own damaged files or incorrectly references a system dependency. It does not replace Windows component repair when multiple programs show the same error.
Fix 7: Confirm the application architecture
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application normally uses the 32-bit system view and a 64-bit application uses the 64-bit system view. Do not assume that placing a DLL in both directories will solve an architecture mismatch.
To identify the application architecture, check the publisher’s documentation or installer requirements. You can also inspect the application’s process in Task Manager:
- Start the affected program if it opens far enough.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
- Enable the platform or architecture column if your Windows build provides it.
- Compare the result with the program’s supported Windows architecture.
The exact file version and size are not universal across Windows releases. An old copy obtained from another installation may be incompatible with the current build, even if its filename matches.

kbd106.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout component, not a normal hardware driver. Updating a keyboard entry in Device Manager does not normally replace this file.
You can still check for a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click a physical keyboard device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
This may help if the physical keyboard itself is malfunctioning, but it will not repair a missing Windows layout DLL.
There is also no ordinary Windows Features checkbox that installs kbd106.dll. Do not enable random optional components, install Visual C++ Redistributables, install DirectX, or add .NET merely because the filename ends in .dll. Those packages are not established sources for this keyboard-layout file.

Do not run regsvr32 on kbd106.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by Windows as layout tables, not registered like COM components. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation

Running a command such as this is not a normal repair:
regsvr32 kbd106.dll
It may produce an error such as DllRegisterServer was not found, and repeating it will not rebuild the keyboard layout. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the language settings instead.

Avoid DLL download sites and manual copying
Do not download kbd106.dll from an unverified DLL repository or copy it beside an application executable. That approach can introduce:
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong Windows-build version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with the correct name but incorrect contents
- A search-order problem that causes an application to load an untrusted copy
- The same underlying component-store damage that caused the original error
Microsoft does not provide a current standalone kbd106.dll download package. The authoritative recovery sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, SFC, and the Windows language features. Manual replacement is not a supported first-line repair because Windows Resource Protection and servicing metadata also matter.
Fix 9: Use Windows recovery when repair still fails
Windows 11 repair reinstall
Supported Windows 11 systems may offer a repair reinstall through Windows Update:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and online until the process completes.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Microsoft’s repair-reinstall instructions

- Open Start.
- Type Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart and test the application.

chkdsk /scan
Run that command from an elevated Command Prompt. Repeated file corruption can indicate malware, storage failure, or an unauthorized system change. If the scan reports storage problems, use the computer or drive manufacturer’s diagnostics and back up important files before attempting more repairs.
Diagnostic checklist if the error remains
Before escalating the problem, record these details:
- Does the error appear in one application or several?
- Does it occur only when Japanese input is selected?
- Did it begin after Windows Update, a language change, antivirus action, disk cleanup, malware removal, or an interrupted repair?
- Does
where /rfind the file inSystem32orSysWOW64? - Did DISM complete successfully?
- What exact result did
sfc /scannowreport? - Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the complete error name another missing dependency?
- Is the file path in the Windows directory or inside the application’s folder?
- Does the problem remain after repairing or reinstalling the affected application?
The most likely successful path is Windows Update, followed by DISM and SFC, followed by restoring the Japanese keyboard layout if it is needed. If only one application still fails after Windows reports no integrity problems, treat that application’s packaging or compatibility as the leading cause rather than replacing kbd106.dll with an internet download.
FAQ
Is kbd106.dll a virus?
The name itself identifies a legitimate Windows keyboard-layout component, but a file with that name can still be replaced or copied by malware. Check its path, run Windows Security, and repair it through DISM and SFC rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is kbd106.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the Japanese 106-key keyboard layout. It is not a standalone Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, game component, or ordinary hardware driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I download kbd106.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the official Windows language settings. A downloaded DLL may have the wrong architecture or build and may create a security risk.
Can I use kbd106n.dll instead?
No. The names refer to related but distinct files. Do not rename or substitute them manually.
Will installing Visual C++ fix this error?
There is no evidence that kbd106.dll belongs to Visual C++ or requires its redistributable. Installing unrelated runtimes does not repair a missing Windows keyboard-layout component.
Why does a game or application report a Windows keyboard DLL?
The program may trigger Windows input-layout loading during startup, or it may incorrectly reference a system dependency. Repair Windows first. If every other program works and only that application fails, repair or reinstall the application from its official publisher.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error returns?
Restart, run Windows Update again, and test the application without third-party keyboard utilities. If corruption returns, investigate antivirus actions, malware, storage errors, and the application’s own files. A Windows 11 repair reinstall may be the next appropriate recovery step.
Do I need to register the DLL?
No. kbd106.dll is not normally repaired with regsvr32. Windows loads keyboard-layout tables through its input system rather than treating them as COM components.
