dsprov.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the WMI DS Provider. If dsprov.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and provides Active Directory or Directory Services information through WMI. Its related namespace is rootdirectoryLDAP, and its associated MOF file is DsProv.mof. Microsoft identifies the component as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

It is normally found here:
%windir%System32wbemdsprov.dll
The expected file description is WMI DS Provider, with Microsoft Corporation shown as the publisher. Microsoft documents the provider and its WMI namespace in its Active Directory Provider documentation.
The file is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable component
- A DirectX file
- A .NET runtime file
- A game-specific DLL
- A general-purpose DLL that should be copied into an application folder
Microsoft does not provide a separate official dsprov.dll redistributable.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed or interrupted Windows servicing operation can leave a system component missing or damaged. Start with Windows Update before running repair commands.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not require an immediate restart.
- Try the program that displayed the
dsprov.dllmessage.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the affected application again.
If Windows Update fails, note the error code and continue with DISM in the next fix. Do not repeatedly retry the application while Windows is still waiting for a restart.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
This is the most important repair path for a genuinely missing or corrupted dsprov.dll.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repair source. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until the verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when both commands are complete, then try the affected program again.
How to interpret the results
SFC may report that:
- It did not find any integrity violations
- It found corrupt files and successfully repaired them
- It found corrupt files but could not repair some of them
- It could not start the repair service
A successful repair does not always produce a special dsprov.dll message. The practical test is whether the original program now starts and whether WMI-related operations work normally.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows may need a matching installation source. Microsoft documents additional repair-source options in its Repair a Windows Image guidance. Avoid using a source from a different Windows edition or build.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repeatedly running SFC without repairing the component store does not solve every case. If you prefer help identifying damaged Windows components instead of manually interpreting command output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions are handled by the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft repair path.
Fix 3: Check whether the file exists in the expected location
Time needed: 5 minutes
Before changing WMI settings or reinstalling an application, check whether Windows has a copy of the file.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
where /r "%windir%" dsprov.dll
A normal Windows installation should identify a copy below the Windows system directories, normally under:
%windir%System32wbem
If the command finds nothing, return to DISM and SFC. Do not obtain a replacement from a random DLL website.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
You can also inspect the expected path directly:
- Press Win+E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
%windir%System32wbem
- Press Enter.
- Look for
dsprov.dll.
A file’s existence alone does not prove that it is correct. A damaged, replaced, incorrectly located, or unsigned file can still produce loading errors.
Fix 4: Check the file metadata and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
PowerShell can show the file path, size, timestamp, version information, and Authenticode signature.
Open PowerShell as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
PowerShell. - Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
$path = "$env:windirSystem32wbemdsprov.dll"
Get-Item $path | Select-Object FullName,Length,LastWriteTime,VersionInfo
Get-AuthenticodeSignature $path
Look for:
- A path under the Windows WMI directory
- Microsoft Windows file metadata
- A valid Microsoft signature
The signature result is useful evidence, but it is not a complete health check. A validly signed file in the wrong location may still be unsuitable, and a valid signature does not prove that WMI registration or dependencies are healthy.
Do not treat old version lists found online as a complete inventory for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Publicly documented older records include 32-bit versions such as 6.3.9600.16384, 6.2.9200.16384, and 6.1.7601.17514, but Windows has multiple releases and architectures. The correct version depends on the installed Windows build.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a system file after a detection or cleanup operation. This is a possible cause, not proof that Windows Security made a mistake.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that refers to
dsprov.dll. - Check the recorded file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are trustworthy:
- The path is the expected Windows WMI path
- The file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component
- Its signature and provenance are consistent with a genuine Windows file
- You are confident the detection is not identifying a modified or substituted file
If the file was quarantined and you are uncertain, leave it quarantined and run DISM followed by SFC. Microsoft describes this review process in its Protection History guidance.
Fix 6: Repair the application that displays the error
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
If dsprov.dll exists, has Microsoft metadata, and Windows repair reports no corruption, determine whether only one application fails.
Try these checks:
- Start another program.
- Open a Windows administrative tool that uses WMI, if available.
- Reproduce the error in the original program.
- Note whether the error appears only there.
If one application fails while Windows and other programs work, the application may have a broken installation, loader path, or dependency. Repair or reinstall that application from its official publisher.
Windows 11 application repair
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options, when available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not solve the problem, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings. For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change, if offered.
If the program is a game, use its file-verification feature only when the error clearly belongs to that game’s private installation. dsprov.dll itself is a Windows WMI component, so replacing the game’s files is not the primary repair for a missing Windows copy.
Fix 7: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10 minutes
Windows supports both 32-bit and 64-bit processes on 64-bit systems through WOW64. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows normally handles its system paths automatically. The system directories may include:
%windir%System32
%windir%SysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files despite its historical name, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit system files. Do not assume that copying the same DLL into both directories is correct.
Architecture problems are more likely when:
- A program was copied from another computer
- Windows was migrated or cloned
- A private application folder contains a manually copied DLL
- The error includes
0xc000007b - A third-party installer placed an incompatible file beside the application executable
Remove unofficial copies from application folders only when you know they were manually added and the application documentation supports doing so. Do not delete protected Windows files. Run DISM and SFC instead.
Microsoft explains the relevant behavior in its documentation on running 32-bit applications and the file-system redirector.

Fix 8: Do not start with regsvr32
Time needed: 5 minutes to understand, longer only for administrator-led repair
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It registers certain COM DLLs, but it does not recreate a missing file, repair a damaged component store, or repair every WMI provider.
dsprov.dll is associated with a WMI provider. Provider installation can involve COM registration and WMI or MOF registration, but that does not mean users should blindly run:
regsvr32 dsprov.dll
Registration may fail because of architecture, dependencies, permissions, or an incorrect working directory. It can also distract from the real cause.
Use DISM and SFC for a missing or corrupted Windows component. Use an application’s official repair process for an application-specific failure. Provider registration should be handled through an appropriate Windows servicing or provider installation procedure rather than an arbitrary regsvr32 command.
Fix 9: Verify the WMI repository only when the symptoms are WMI-wide
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A missing-file dialog from one application does not automatically mean that the WMI repository is corrupt. Consider repository repair when you also see symptoms such as:
- WMI queries failing across multiple tools
- Missing WMI classes
- Management software failing broadly
- Administrative scripts reporting WMI errors
- Multiple WMI providers behaving incorrectly
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
winmgmt /verifyrepository
If Windows reports that the repository is consistent, do not reset it. Return to the application repair and Windows component steps.
If it reports inconsistency, try:
winmgmt /salvagerepository
Restart Windows and retest the affected WMI operation.

Resetting returns the repository to its initial operating-system state and can affect installed WMI providers. It is not a first-line fix for dsprov.dll, and it should not be used simply because a program displays “specified module could not be found.”
Microsoft documents these commands in its winmgmt reference and WMI troubleshooting guidance.

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A driver reinstall is not a primary dsprov.dll repair. Consider it only when the same incident includes a separate device-management or WMI problem.

- Restart Windows after the change.
Use the device manufacturer’s official driver source when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not install a driver merely because an application happens to mention dsprov.dll.
If manually hunting through many driver packages is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies; installation is handled by the full version, and driver work is not required to repair a standalone missing Windows component.
Fix 11: Use System Restore if the failure began recently
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
System Restore can help when the problem began after software installation, servicing, a system migration, or another recent change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the
dsprov.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next.
- Confirm the restore.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can roll back applications, drivers, settings, and system files. Microsoft provides additional details in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 12: Perform an in-place Windows repair
Time needed: 45 minutes to several hours
If DISM, SFC, application repair, and System Restore do not resolve persistent Windows corruption, use official Windows recovery or installation media.
Back up important files first. Use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page and choose the repair or installation route appropriate to your edition and installation state.
An in-place repair can replace damaged Windows components while preserving personal files and, depending on the selected option, applications. Read every setup screen carefully. Do not format the drive or choose a clean installation when your goal is to preserve the existing environment.
What the error message actually means
Common examples include:
The program can't start because dsprov.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
There was a problem starting dsprov.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
Error loading dsprov.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
The code execution cannot proceed because dsprov.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
dsprov.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The wording varies by Windows version and by the program showing the message.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dsprov.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies. A bad architecture match, damaged system component, or invalid private copy can produce a similar result.
Likely causes of a dsprov.dll error
| Likely cause | What points to it | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Windows component corruption | File is missing, damaged, or Windows reports integrity problems | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Interrupted servicing or migration | Problem began after an update, disk move, clone, or recovery operation | Install updates, run DISM and SFC |
| Antivirus quarantine | Protection History names the file | Verify path and signature, then repair Windows |
| Broken application installation | Only one program fails | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Architecture mismatch | Error follows a copied application or includes a bad-image code | Remove unofficial copies and repair the correct installation |
| WMI repository damage | Multiple WMI tools and queries fail | Verify, salvage, and only if necessary reset the repository |
| Driver problem | A separate device or management fault is present | Inspect Device Manager and use the manufacturer’s driver |
Why downloading dsprov.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or modified files
- A file from the wrong Windows release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with missing dependencies
- A copy that does not match Windows servicing
- A DLL that does not repair WMI registration or the component store
Copying a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, an application directory, or all of them can create a worse mismatch. It can also hide the underlying corruption until another Windows component fails.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, official Windows media, and the affected application’s official installer instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is dsprov.dll legitimate?
Yes. dsprov.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its description is WMI DS Provider, and its role is to expose Active Directory or Directory Services information through WMI.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Where should dsprov.dll be located?
The normal location is:
%windir%System32wbemdsprov.dll
On 64-bit Windows, WOW64 manages separate native and 32-bit system paths. Do not manually copy the file into both locations.
Is dsprov.dll a Visual C++ file?
No. It is a Windows WMI provider, not a Visual C++ Redistributable component. Installing Visual C++ will not normally repair a missing dsprov.dll.
Should I run regsvr32 dsprov.dll?
Not as a first repair. regsvr32 does not replace a missing file or repair the WMI repository. Use DISM and SFC for Windows corruption, and use official provider registration procedures only when a qualified administrator has confirmed a registration problem.
Why does reinstalling the program sometimes fail?
The program may be reporting a Windows component or a dependency failure rather than containing dsprov.dll itself. If the file is part of Windows, reinstalling the application cannot necessarily restore it. Repair Windows first.
Does the error mean WMI is broken?
Not necessarily. A single application can have a broken loader path while WMI remains healthy. Check whether multiple WMI tools, queries, or management applications fail before considering repository repair.
What should I provide when asking for more help?
Include:
- The complete error text
- The executable or program that displays it
- Whether one application or Windows generally is affected
- Your Windows edition and build
- Whether
%windir%System32wbemdsprov.dllexists - The result of DISM and SFC
- Whether the file appears in Protection History
- Whether the issue began after an update, migration, malware cleanup, antivirus action, or disk problem
That information separates a missing Windows component from an application-specific loader or dependency failure.
