The 60-second answer
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and install all available updates.
- Restart again.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows once more.
- If the error affects only one application, repair or reinstall that application after completing the Windows repair.
kbdal.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET redistributable. Reinstalling those packages is not an evidence-based fix for this file.

What is kbdal.dll
kbdal.dll is the Microsoft Windows component identified as Albania Keyboard Layout. It implements the Albanian keyboard layout and is associated with the Windows keyboard identifier 0000041C, which Microsoft lists in its keyboard and language-pack documentation.

The file is part of Microsoft Windows Operating System and is published by Microsoft Corporation. It is normally associated with the Windows system directory rather than with a particular game or third-party application.
#1 Best Overall
Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs as input components. An application can appear to be responsible for the error simply because Windows loads the layout while that application starts, opens a text field, switches input languages, or initializes its window system. That does not prove the application installed kbdal.dll or that it contains a copy that should be replaced.
The exact file version depends on the Windows edition and build. There is no single universal kbdal.dll version that should be copied to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer.
Microsoft’s keyboard identifier documentation provides the official identifier information. Microsoft’s keyboard-layout driver sample explains how Windows keyboard-layout DLLs are designed and installed.
Where kbdal.dll should be located
On a typical Windows installation, the native copy belongs under:
%SystemRoot%System32
You can check that location without changing anything:
dir "%windir%System32kbdal.dll"
On 64-bit Windows, Windows also maintains architecture-specific system files. System32 is generally the native system directory, including 64-bit system files. It does not mean “the 32-bit folder.”
32-bit system components are generally exposed through:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
You can check that location with:
dir "%windir%SysWOW64kbdal.dll"
Do not assume that every Windows installation will contain the file in both locations. Language components, Windows editions, installed features, and build differences affect which files are present. Absence from one location does not prove malware, and absence from both locations does not mean you should download a replacement.
Microsoft documents this behavior in its WOW64 file-system redirection guidance.
Why Windows or an application reports this error
The most useful clue is when the message appears.
| What you observe | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| The file is missing from a Windows system directory | Deleted or damaged Windows component |
| The message began after an update or upgrade | Interrupted update or damaged component store |
| Only Albanian input is affected | Missing or damaged keyboard or language feature |
| One application reports the error | Damaged application, launcher, or unusual dependency |
| The file exists but Windows rejects it | Corrupt, wrong-architecture, inaccessible, or replaced binary |
| Antivirus reports or removes the file | Quarantine, false positive, or suspicious replacement |
| The file exists outside Windows directories | Untrusted copy or a separate application component |
Possible triggers include Windows Update problems, language-pack changes, cleanup software, antivirus quarantine, disk corruption, malware removal, or an interrupted Windows upgrade. A custom keyboard layout can also create a separate problem, but that is not the same as the Microsoft kbdal.dll component.

A program can report a missing DLL even when a file with that name exists. The file may be corrupt, inaccessible, built for the wrong CPU architecture, or not the copy Windows is trying to load.
Fix 1: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when kbdal.dll is missing, corrupt, or rejected as “not designed to run on Windows.”
Step 1: Install pending Windows updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Updates can restore or replace protected Windows components. If the error started immediately after an interrupted update, complete the update process before running the repair commands.
Step 2: Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. It may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window just because the percentage does not change immediately.
A successful operation normally ends with a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully.

Step 3: Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corrupted files that it could not repair. Restart Windows after the scan, then test the keyboard layout and the application that showed the error.
If you regularly repeat SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show the detected problems in a scan, while repairs are completed by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC tools remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
If SFC cannot repair every file

If DISM cannot obtain repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not guess a drive letter, image path, or source file.

- Record the exact DISM or SFC error code.
- Check Windows Update again.
- Confirm that the computer has enough free storage.
- Check the disk for errors and review recent security-software actions.
- Use a matching Windows repair source.
- Consider System Restore if the problem clearly began after a recent system change.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair when system integrity remains damaged.
Do not keep replacing individual DLLs blindly.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the Albanian keyboard layout
If Windows starts normally but Albanian input or language switching is broken, repair the keyboard feature rather than reinstalling unrelated software.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the relevant language.
- Select the More options button beside it.
- Select Language options.
- Review the installed keyboards.
- Add the Albanian keyboard if it is missing.
- If it is already present, remove it, restart Windows, and add it again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Select the relevant language.
- Choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, add the Albanian keyboard or remove and re-add it.
- Restart Windows.
The exact labels vary between Windows releases and installed language packs. If the language feature cannot be added, return to Windows Update and repair the Windows component store using DISM and SFC.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Test the result
After restarting:
- Select the language indicator on the taskbar.
- Choose the Albanian keyboard layout.
- Open Notepad.
- Type several characters.
- Switch between the available keyboard layouts.
- Start the application that previously displayed the error.
If switching layouts works and the application starts, the problem was likely the Windows language or keyboard component. If only one application still fails, continue with the application-specific steps below.
Fix 3: Repair the application that shows the message
A genuine Windows keyboard-layout DLL is not normally an application runtime dependency. Still, an application can display the message if its launcher is damaged, it has an unusual dependency, or its installation is requesting a file incorrectly.
Use this test:
- If the error appears during Windows startup, sign-in, or language switching, focus on Windows repair and language features.
- If the error appears in several applications, focus on Windows component repair.
- If the error appears only when launching one application, repair that application after completing DISM and SFC.
- If the error appears only after installing a custom keyboard layout, investigate that custom layout separately.
For a single affected application:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install a fresh copy from the application publisher’s official source.
If the program has a launcher with Verify files, Repair installation, or a similar function, use that feature. Reinstalling the application is not a substitute for repairing Windows when the error affects the whole system.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and suspicious copies
If security software specifically quarantined kbdal.dll, do not immediately restore it.
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Review Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent section.
- Confirm the detected file path.
- Note whether it was in
%SystemRoot%System32,%SystemRoot%SysWOW64, an application folder, or another location. - Run a full scan.
- Use DISM and SFC to restore a genuine Windows copy.
A Microsoft system file in a normal Windows system directory should be repaired through Windows rather than replaced with an unverified download. Restore a quarantined item only after confirming the detection and the file’s authenticity.
A file named kbdal.dll outside the Windows system directories deserves extra scrutiny. The filename alone does not prove that the file is genuine.
If the file is repeatedly removed, review antivirus history, scheduled cleanup tools, disk-health warnings, and malware findings. Continued disappearance after repair may indicate a storage problem or a security issue.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file authenticity
Do not replace a 64-bit Windows system file with an arbitrary 32-bit copy, or the reverse. System32 and SysWOW64 have different roles on 64-bit Windows, and Windows uses file-system redirection for some 32-bit processes.

You can inspect a file without registering or replacing it:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the file’s location.
- Right-click
kbdal.dll. - Select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Review Details for the description and company information.
A genuine Windows copy should be in an expected Windows directory and should have Microsoft-related file information. Signature details alone are not a complete diagnosis, so continue with DISM and SFC if the file is damaged or rejected.
The phrase “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, an incompatible binary, or the wrong architecture. It does not automatically prove malware.

kbdal.dll is a keyboard-layout component, not a normal hardware driver. Device Manager is useful only if keyboard hardware or another input device also shows a warning.
To inspect it:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected hardware.
- Select Properties and review Device status.
- Select Update driver if Windows identifies a driver problem.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall keyboard hardware merely because kbdal.dll is missing. Device Manager cannot replace a damaged Windows layout DLL.
If you are manually hunting through hardware vendors and guessing which of many drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues, while driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or repair of the Windows keyboard component.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 kbdal.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded as layout tables by Windows rather than registered like COM components.
Running regsvr32 may produce an error, or it may create the impression that registration is relevant when the actual problem is a damaged Windows component, a missing language feature, or a wrong-architecture file.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of regsvr32. It does not turn an arbitrary replacement DLL into a valid Windows keyboard layout.
Why downloading kbdal.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and random file mirrors. A loose copy may be:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong CPU architecture
- Corrupt or incomplete
- Modified to contain malware
- Missing a valid Microsoft signature
- Placed in the wrong directory
- Unable to repair the damaged component store
Manual copying can also hide the real cause, including disk corruption, antivirus removal, an interrupted update, or malware. It may cause Windows to load a file that does not match the rest of the operating system.

Frequently asked questions
Is kbdal.dll malware?
No. kbdal.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component associated with the Albanian layout. However, malware can use the same filename. A copy outside the expected Windows system directories should be investigated rather than trusted by name alone.
Does kbdal.dll affect only Albanian typing?
A damaged layout component may first appear as broken Albanian input or failed language switching. It can also produce a Windows loader error during startup or application launch if Windows or an application requests the component.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file specifically. Those packages should be considered only when the error names their own files, such as MSVCP*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or a clearly identified DirectX or .NET component.
Should I reinstall Windows?
Usually not as the first step. Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first. Use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair when component repair fails and the system remains damaged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does an application report kbdal.dll if it is a Windows file?
The application may trigger Windows initialization, text input, or keyboard-layout loading. The message identifies the file Windows could not load, not necessarily the software that installed it.
Should I copy kbdal.dll into the application folder?
No. That can create the wrong architecture, bypass Windows component servicing, and introduce an untrusted binary. Repair the Windows installation first, then repair the application if only that application remains affected.
What if DISM and SFC both fail?
Record the exact error code, check Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source, and consider an in-place repair. Avoid repeated blind DLL replacements.
Does a custom keyboard layout change the diagnosis?
Yes. If the problem began immediately after installing a custom layout, remove or repair that layout and investigate its configuration separately. A custom keyboard-layout DLL is not the same as Microsoft’s kbdal.dll.
The correct repair path
For most kbdal.dll errors, start with Windows Update, then run DISM and SFC in that order. Repair the Albanian keyboard feature if input switching is the only symptom, and repair the affected application only when the error is limited to that program.
Do not register kbdal.dll, install unrelated runtime packages, or download a replacement from an untrusted source. If the file remains unavailable after Windows component repair, use Microsoft’s recovery or repair-installation options rather than continuing to copy individual DLLs.
