directx.dll is associated with GoldWave’s DirectX audio-effect plug-in wrapper, not normally with the protected Windows system files. If Windows says directx.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair GoldWave and its plug-in before attempting Windows-wide DLL fixes.
The word “DirectX” is confusing here. GoldWave’s plug-in uses the DirectX Audio Effects interface, but that is different from Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime package. Installing Microsoft DirectX will not normally restore GoldWave’s directx.dll.

Fix 1: Reinstall the official GoldWave DirectX plug-in
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
This is the most likely fix when the error appears while GoldWave starts, scans effects, opens its effect menu, or loads a DirectX audio effect.
GoldWave provides separate DirectX plug-in packages for:

- GoldWave v6.78 or later
- GoldWave v5, 32-bit
Do not choose the package by guessing from the filename. Match it to the GoldWave version installed on the computer.
Check your GoldWave version
- Open GoldWave if it starts.
- Select Help.
- Select About GoldWave.
- Note the version number.
If GoldWave will not open:
- Right-click the GoldWave shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the product version if Windows provides it.
You can also check the folder shown under the Shortcut tab. Do not assume that a folder named Program Files (x86) automatically tells you which GoldWave package to use. GoldWave v5 is explicitly 32-bit, while current GoldWave releases require 64-bit Windows.
Download and install the matching package
- Close GoldWave.
- Close any audio editor, host, or effect browser that may be using GoldWave components.
- Open GoldWave’s official plug-in page by navigating to the GoldWave website manually.
- Download the package labeled for GoldWave v6.78 or later if you use a modern v6 or v7 installation.
- Download the package labeled GoldWave v5, 32 bit only if you use GoldWave v5.
- Run the downloaded installer or open the supplied archive.
- Install or extract the plug-in into the GoldWave installation as directed by the package.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Start GoldWave again.
Do not replace the existing file with a copy downloaded from a DLL index site. The official plug-in package is safer and restores the related files and installation structure rather than just placing an isolated DLL somewhere on the disk.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Enable the effect in GoldWave
After installation:
- Open GoldWave.
- Select Options.
- Select Plug-in.
- Select Effect.
- Open DirectX.
- Enable the required effect.
- Close and restart GoldWave.
GoldWave detects new plug-ins during startup, so restarting is necessary even if the file was installed successfully.
What success looks like: GoldWave starts without the directx.dll message, and the DirectX effect appears under the DirectX plug-in menu.
If it still fails: Confirm that you installed the package for the correct GoldWave release. If the wrapper loads but one effect does not, continue to Fix 3.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall GoldWave
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Use this step if the official DirectX plug-in package does not resolve the error, or if several GoldWave components are missing.
- Close GoldWave.
- Open a web browser and navigate to GoldWave’s official download page.
- Download the GoldWave release that matches your installation and Windows version.
- Run the installer.
- If offered a repair option, choose Repair.
- If repair is not available, install the compatible release over the existing GoldWave folder.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Reinstall the matching GoldWave DirectX plug-in.
- Open GoldWave and check Options | Plug-in | Effect | DirectX.
Installing over the existing GoldWave folder generally preserves settings and presets, but record any custom plug-in locations before changing the installation.
Current GoldWave releases require 64-bit Windows. Older GoldWave releases remain relevant on older systems, and GoldWave v5 uses the 32-bit plug-in package. If you are moving from an older release to a current one, verify that the computer meets the current Windows architecture requirements before upgrading.

- The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
- Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
- Find your signature sound: Scarlett 4th Gen's improved Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
What success looks like: GoldWave opens, the plug-in menu is available, and the affected effect loads.
If it still fails: Temporarily disable or remove the particular third-party DirectX effect named in the error. The wrapper and the audio effect are separate components. A damaged effect can fail even when directx.dll itself is correctly installed.

Fix 3: Test the individual DirectX audio effect
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
GoldWave’s wrapper allows the program to use DirectX Audio Effect plug-ins. It does not guarantee that every third-party effect is compatible with your GoldWave release, Windows architecture, or audio configuration.
- Open GoldWave.
- Select Options.
- Select Plug-in.
- Select Effect.
- Select DirectX.
- Note which effects are listed.
- Disable the effect associated with the failure.
- Restart GoldWave.
- Test GoldWave with a built-in effect or a different DirectX effect.
If GoldWave opens after one effect is disabled, the wrapper is probably present and the problem is specific to that effect. Reinstall the effect from its original vendor, update it if the vendor provides a compatible release, or contact that effect’s creator.
If no DirectX effects appear and GoldWave continues to report directx.dll, return to Fix 1 and reinstall the GoldWave package. If the file exists but fails to load, continue with the quarantine and dependency checks below.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a plug-in after an update or after detecting suspicious behavior. Do not restore a file merely because its name is familiar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving GoldWave or
directx.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from the official GoldWave installation and you have verified that the detection is incorrect.
- If you are unsure, leave the file quarantined.
- Reinstall the official GoldWave DirectX plug-in instead.
Microsoft’s Protection History is retained for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible. If the file is reported outside the GoldWave installation directory, do not assume that it is the legitimate module. Scan the computer and obtain a clean copy through GoldWave’s official package.
What success looks like: The file remains in the GoldWave installation directory after restarting GoldWave, and Defender does not immediately quarantine it again.
If it fails: Allowing a file that is genuinely unsafe can put the computer at risk. Contact GoldWave or your security administrator rather than repeatedly disabling antivirus protection.

- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Fix 5: Update or reinstall related audio drivers
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A missing directx.dll message is not normally a driver problem, but a DirectX effect can fail because its audio driver or device support is damaged. Use this step when the error occurs only with a particular sound device or after a driver change.

- Test GoldWave again.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, download the driver only from the computer, motherboard, or audio-device manufacturer. Do not use a random driver package based only on a similar device name.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when identifying the correct device and version manually becomes difficult; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling GoldWave and its official DirectX plug-in remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Reinstall the audio device
Use this only if the device is malfunctioning or its driver installation is clearly damaged.
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test GoldWave.
Do not uninstall an audio device merely because directx.dll is missing. The GoldWave plug-in should be repaired first.
Fix 6: Install Microsoft DirectX only for Microsoft DirectX errors
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime is relevant when the error names a Microsoft legacy component such as:
d3dx9_*.dllxinput1_3.dllxaudio2_7.dllxactengine*.dll
It does not normally install or replace GoldWave’s directx.dll.
If your error names one of those Microsoft files:
- Navigate to Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime download.
- Download the official installer.
- Run it as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Allow the installation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft describes this package as installing legacy side-by-side components used by older software. It does not replace the DirectX runtime built into Windows.
What success looks like: The specifically named Microsoft DirectX component is restored and the application starts.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use DISM and System File Checker only when multiple unrelated applications report damaged or missing Windows system files. They are not expected to restore a third-party GoldWave plug-in.
First, repair the Windows component store:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test GoldWave.
Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker.
What success looks like: SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, and other Windows applications stop reporting system DLL errors.
If it fails: If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, save the exact result and investigate Windows servicing problems separately. Repeating the commands will not recreate a GoldWave plug-in that was never part of Windows.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands becomes the main obstacle, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs through the full version are optional, and GoldWave’s official plug-in reinstall remains the correct fix for this application-specific file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore only after a recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when GoldWave worked previously and the failure clearly began after a driver, update, or software installation.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. After the restore completes, reinstall the official GoldWave DirectX plug-in if necessary.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not start with:
regsvr32 directx.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command for missing application files. A wrapper or plug-in may not support self-registration, and the command can produce an entry-point error without fixing GoldWave.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s registration role. If GoldWave’s package installer does not register the component automatically, manually forcing registration is not a substitute for installing the correct package.

Do not copy directx.dll into System32
Avoid these common steps:
- Downloading a loose DLL from a random website
- Copying it into
C:WindowsSystem32 - Copying it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64 - Renaming another DLL to
directx.dll - Copying the file from another computer
- Running
regsvr32repeatedly - Installing Microsoft DirectX without checking the exact missing filename
These actions can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, omit dependencies, or place the file where GoldWave does not look for it. They also leave the underlying GoldWave installation damaged.
The safe source is GoldWave’s official plug-in package, followed by GoldWave’s official installer if the main application is damaged. Microsoft’s official DirectX package is appropriate only for Microsoft legacy DirectX files named in the error.
Likely causes of the error
| Cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| GoldWave plug-in was deleted or partially installed | Reinstall the matching official DirectX plug-in |
| Wrong GoldWave package or architecture | Match v5 32-bit or the modern v6.78-or-later package |
| A third-party effect is incompatible | Disable, update, or reinstall that effect |
| Antivirus quarantined the wrapper | Check Protection History and reinstall from GoldWave |
| GoldWave installation is damaged | Repair or reinstall GoldWave, then reinstall the plug-in |
| Audio driver or device changed | Update or reinstall the device driver |
| Windows system corruption | Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows errors exist |
| Recent update or driver change | Consider System Restore if a suitable restore point exists |
Frequently asked questions
Is directx.dll a Windows system file?
It is not established as a standard protected Windows or Microsoft DirectX system DLL. The relevant use described by GoldWave is its DirectX audio-effect plug-in wrapper.
Is directx.dll part of Microsoft DirectX?
The name refers to GoldWave’s DirectX Audio Effects interface in this context. Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime and GoldWave’s wrapper are separate packages.
Which GoldWave package should I install?
Use the package for GoldWave v6.78 or later with modern GoldWave releases. Use the GoldWave v5, 32 bit package only with GoldWave v5. Verify the installed GoldWave release before choosing.

Why does the file exist but still fail to load?
A dependent audio effect, driver, runtime, or architecture mismatch can prevent a present file from loading. Test GoldWave with the affected third-party effect disabled.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
No. The copy may be the wrong version or architecture, may have incompatible dependencies, and may not belong to the same GoldWave release.
What information should I collect if the problem remains?
