If Windows shows “The program can’t start because kbdarmty.dll is missing from your computer,” the file is usually a damaged or missing Windows keyboard-layout component. kbdarmty.dll is the Microsoft Armenian Typewriter keyboard-layout DLL, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:

- The file is missing from the Windows directory: install pending updates, then run DISM and System File Checker.
- Armenian Typewriter disappeared from your keyboard list: remove and re-add the Armenian language or keyboard layout.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error began after an update or language-pack change: repeat Windows Update, restart, and repair the component store.
- Only one application reports the error: repair that application after repairing Windows. There is no verified dependency tying
kbdarmty.dllto a particular game or program. - The file exists but Windows says it is corrupted or “not designed to run on Windows”: check its location and Microsoft signature, then use DISM and SFC.
- The problem continues after repair: use Windows’ repair reinstall, System Restore, or an in-place reinstall rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What kbdarmty.dll does
Windows keyboard-layout DLLs contain tables that map keyboard scan codes and virtual keys to characters. Windows loads the appropriate layout when its input locale is selected.

kbdarmty.dll provides the Armenian Typewriter layout. It is different from Armenian Phonetic and Armenian Legacy layouts. Microsoft identifies Armenian Typewriter with keyboard identifier 0003042B, and the layout was introduced in Windows 8.

The file is part of Windows, but it is not required on every installation. Windows uses it when the Armenian Typewriter layout is installed or selected. Keyboard-layout files normally reside under %windir%System32, with architecture-specific handling on 64-bit Windows. Do not move a copy between System32 and SysWOW64.
File versions and sizes vary by Windows build and architecture. A version shown on another computer or a download page is not automatically correct for yours.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed update, incomplete language installation, or servicing problem can leave a protected Windows component unavailable.

- Open Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates or Download and install if offered.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not explicitly require a restart.
- Try selecting Armenian Typewriter again or start the application that displayed the error.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not download kbdarmty.dll separately.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the keyboard layout again.
A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it repaired files, restart before testing. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

Manually hunting for matching system files and repeatedly guessing which Windows build is installed is slower and less reliable than servicing Windows itself. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media or another repair source.
The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build. An example command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the correct mounted or prepared Windows source. Do not use a random Windows folder from another computer. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow

Fix 3: Remove and re-add Armenian Typewriter
The file may not be corrupt at all. The Armenian language component or keyboard registration may simply have been removed or damaged.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Time & language → Language & region.
- Find Armenian. If it is missing, select Add a language, search for Armenian, and install it.
- Select the three dots beside Armenian.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose Armenian Typewriter.
- If it already exists, remove it, restart, then add it again.
- Select the layout from the input-language control on the taskbar.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Time & Language → Language.
- Select Add a preferred language if Armenian is not listed.
- Select Armenian, then choose Next and Install.
- Select Armenian in the language list.
- Choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard → Armenian Typewriter.
- Remove and re-add the layout if it was already present.
- Restart Windows and test it.

If the layout cannot be added, return to Fix 1 and Fix 2. That usually indicates a Windows servicing or language-component problem rather than an application DLL problem.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false positive or a security cleanup.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an item involving
kbdarmty.dll. - Expand the detection and review its location, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because the filename looks familiar.
- Restore it only if its location and Microsoft signature confirm that it is genuine and the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device again. If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined, update Defender, run a full scan, and let DISM and SFC restore the Windows component instead.
If the file was found outside the normal Windows directory, especially in an application or temporary folder, treat that as suspicious. Run a Microsoft Defender scan and avoid copying that file into System32.
Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error
A program can display a DLL error while Windows is loading an input layout, but there is no reliable evidence that kbdarmty.dll belongs to a particular game or application.
After repairing Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu and choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- For desktop software without those options, run its official installer and choose Repair, or uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official source.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not place kbdarmty.dll in the program’s installation folder as a first-line fix. That can create a version or architecture conflict and bypass Windows servicing.

Fix 6: Check related input devices and drivers
kbdarmty.dll is not a keyboard hardware driver, and updating a keyboard driver normally will not replace it. However, if the same incident also caused a physical keyboard or input-device problem, check Device Manager.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open Properties → Driver and choose Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows.
Avoid manually replacing system DLLs while troubleshooting a driver issue. Searching through dozens of driver packages and guessing which one is stale can obscure the original problem. Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not register this file with:
regsvr32 kbdarmty.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration procedures such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. Keyboard-layout DLLs provide keyboard mapping tables to the Windows input system. They are not normally registered that way, so the command may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.”
Use Windows language settings, DISM, SFC, and Windows Update instead.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong architecture. A copied file may also leave the damaged language registration or component store untouched.
Safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- Windows language settings
- DISM and SFC
- Matching official Windows installation media
- Windows recovery or repair reinstall
Never assume the newest-looking file is correct. Windows system files must match the installed build and architecture.
If SFC still cannot repair the file
If the error returns after DISM and SFC:
- Check Settings → Windows Update → Update history for a failed language or quality update.
- Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
- Review the SFC result and the CBS log rather than downloading another DLL.
- On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now if the option is available.
- Follow the prompts and keep the options that preserve your apps, files, and settings.
If that option is unavailable, use System Restore if a suitable restore point predates the problem. For severe component-store or profile damage, back up your files and perform an in-place Windows reinstall using matching official installation media.

FAQ
Is kbdarmty.dll malware?
Not by filename alone. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is in the expected Windows location and digitally signed by Microsoft. A copy in an unusual folder, an invalid signature, or a Defender detection requires investigation.

No. There is no evidence that kbdarmty.dll is a Visual C++, Visual Studio, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Reinstalling those runtimes is not the correct first fix.
Is Armenian Typewriter required on every PC?
No. It is used when that optional keyboard layout is installed or selected. If you do not use it, removing the layout may stop the related loading error, although a damaged Windows component should still be repaired.
Does 32-bit versus 64-bit matter?
Yes. Windows maintains architecture-specific system-file conventions. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system directory or move files between System32 and SysWOW64. Let Windows provision the correct file.
Can I fix it by copying the DLL into a game folder?
That is unsafe and unlikely to repair the underlying issue. Repair Windows first, then repair the affected application if it still fails.

Does Device Manager replace kbdarmty.dll?
No. Device Manager manages hardware drivers. It can help with a separate keyboard-device problem, but Windows servicing and language-layout settings handle this DLL.
