kbdfthrk.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component for the Futhark layout. If Windows reports that kbdfthrk.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows and the keyboard-layout configuration rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, game library, or ordinary application dependency. Microsoft identifies Futhark with keyboard-layout ID 00120C00, and Windows normally installs keyboard-layout DLLs in %WINDIR%System32.Microsoft’s Futhark keyboard documentation explains the layout, while Microsoft’s keyboard-layout sample documentation describes how Windows loads these DLLs.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected system files or language features in an inconsistent state.

- Check whether the
kbdfthrk.dllerror returns.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Click Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not manually replace the DLL. Continue with the servicing repair below so Windows can restore the file that matches your build and architecture.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer after SFC completes.
- Test sign-in, language switching, and the application that displayed the error.
If SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, restarting is essential. If it says that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong when repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you guessing about the remaining damage; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair path.

If DISM fails because Windows Update cannot provide repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build; do not point DISM at a random ISO or another computer’s system folder.
Fix 3: Remove and re-add the Futhark keyboard layout
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
This fix is most relevant when the error appears during sign-in, language switching, keyboard setup, or after changing language preferences.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Time & language > Language & region.
- In Windows 10, select Time & Language > Language.
- Find the language that contains the Futhark keyboard.
- Select its Language options or Options entry.
- Under Keyboards, select the Futhark layout.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the same language settings page.
- Select Add a keyboard and add Futhark only if you still need it.
Microsoft’s instructions for changing layouts are available in its keyboard-layout settings guidance.
If the layout cannot be removed, remove the associated language from Language & region, restart, and add the language again. Avoid editing keyboard-layout registry entries manually because stale entries can be recreated incorrectly.
Fix 4: Check the file’s path and digital signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
Checking the actual file helps distinguish a missing Windows component from a suspicious copy or a misleading error.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Look for
kbdfthrk.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check that the description identifies the Futhark keyboard layout and that the company information refers to Microsoft.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
The normal location is %WINDIR%System32, although Windows controls the exact files used for the installed language features. Do not assume that every DLL must also appear in SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows.
A file with no valid Microsoft signature, an unusual publisher, or a copy in a random application folder deserves a security check. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and review detections or quarantined files. Restore a quarantined file only after confirming that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed system file. Then run a full Windows Security scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to download or copy a DLL.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
Fix 5: Run a targeted SFC check if the file exists
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
If the file exists in the expected location but you suspect corruption, run SFC against that specific path.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32kbdfthrk.dll
- Restart Windows if SFC repairs the file.
- Test the keyboard layout again.
Use this command only when the file exists at that path and Windows is running normally. If the file is absent, run the full DISM and SFC sequence instead.
If the file is present but Windows still says that it cannot load it, the problem may involve a damaged component store, stale layout configuration, a failed update, or the loading context that requested the file. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent.
Fix 6: Check the application or process showing the error
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
A program that displays the message is not necessarily the owner of kbdfthrk.dll. An unrelated application may trigger Windows input initialization while it starts.
Record the following details:
- The complete error text
- The executable or application name
- Whether it appears at startup, sign-in, language switching, or application launch
- The path shown for any referenced file
- Your Windows version from
winver - Recent updates, language changes, or antivirus events
Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter to identify the installed Windows release.
If only one trusted application produces the message and Windows repair succeeds, update that application from its official developer source. If the error appears before any application opens, focus on Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and keyboard-layout settings instead.
Fix 7: Update relevant drivers only when symptoms point to input hardware
Time needed: 10–20 minutes.
A keyboard driver is separate from kbdfthrk.dll, but a broader input problem can make the failure appear related. Use this step for keyboard detection failures, repeated device errors, or problems that affect physical input rather than only the Futhark layout.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected keyboard.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also expand Human Interface Devices and check for a device with a warning icon. Do not uninstall a working keyboard device unless you have another way to control Windows.
Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers when checking many devices manually is impractical; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and updating a driver will not replace the need to repair Windows if kbdfthrk.dll itself is damaged.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.
Use System Restore when the error began after a known change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
System Restore does not replace a personal backup. Save current work before using it.
If there is no suitable restore point and DISM, SFC, updates, and layout removal do not help, perform a supported in-place Windows repair using official Microsoft installation media. Choose the option that preserves personal files and applications when offered, and back up important data first. A clean installation should be considered only after less destructive repairs have failed.

Why you should not download kbdfthrk.dll
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, an incorrect Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a genuine file copied from another machine may not match your Windows installation.
Manual copying also bypasses the Windows component store and can leave the underlying update or language-layout problem unresolved. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows servicing tools, Microsoft installation media, and the Windows language features already supported by your installation.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not use this as a repair:
regsvr32 kbdfthrk.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM self-registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded through Windows keyboard-layout configuration, not ordinary COM registration. Running the command may simply produce a misleading message that DllRegisterServer was not found.
Likely causes and the matching repair
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted Windows file | Run DISM, then SFC, and restart |
| Broken Futhark layout configuration | Remove the layout, restart, and add it again if needed |
| Interrupted Windows update | Install pending updates, restart, then repeat DISM and SFC |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the event and signature before restoring anything |
| Wrong manually copied build or architecture | Remove the copy and let Windows servicing restore the correct file |
| Deeper Windows corruption | Try System Restore or an in-place repair |
File versions vary by Windows build and architecture. Do not treat an old version number or a file from another installation as a universal replacement.

Is kbdfthrk.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Windows DLL for the Futhark keyboard layout. Verify the copy on your computer by checking its path and Microsoft digital signature.
What is the Futhark keyboard layout?
Futhark is a Windows keyboard layout supported through a layout DLL. Microsoft assigns it keyboard-layout ID 00120C00.
Is it part of Windows or a separate download?
It is associated with Windows language and keyboard-layout support. It is not a separate Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game package that should be downloaded independently.
Which Windows versions contain it?
Availability depends on the Windows release, build, architecture, and installed language features. There is no single universal version or file size for every Windows installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can an antivirus program remove it?
It can quarantine a file if it misidentifies or blocks it, but quarantine must be confirmed in the security product’s history. Do not assume antivirus is responsible without that evidence.
What if the file exists but still will not load?
Run DISM and SFC, remove and re-add the Futhark layout, check recent updates, and inspect the full error dialog. A loader message can indicate a dependency or loading-context problem rather than an absent kbdfthrk.dll.
Should I reinstall the program that shows the message?
Only if the evidence points to that program. The application may merely trigger Windows input initialization. Repair Windows and the keyboard layout first, then update or reinstall the application from its official source if it remains the only affected program.
