windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll: Windows Repair

windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX file, .NET library, or ordinary game DLL. Its description is WinRT Credential Picker Server, and it supports the Windows Runtime Windows.Security.Credentials.UI.CredentialPicker API, which displays credential prompts and collects credentials.

If Windows reports that the file is missing, the safest repair is to service Windows itself: install pending updates, run DISM, then run SFC. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into a game folder.

What this DLL does

The CredentialPicker API is part of Windows and is documented for Windows 10 and later. Applications can use it when they need Windows to present a credential dialog, such as a sign-in or authentication prompt.

The file may be involved in messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “There was a problem starting windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll.”

The error may appear when Windows starts, when one application opens, or when software attempts to display a credential prompt. A message naming this DLL does not always mean the file itself is absent. A dependency, system component, architecture mismatch, damaged file, or invalid loading context can produce a similar error.

Public file records report Microsoft Corporation as the publisher and list historical 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions. One commonly listed 64-bit version is 10.0.18362.1, but that is an older build and is not a universal download target.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates first

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time

Windows servicing is the correct first step because the file belongs to the operating system.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every available Windows update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Open the program that produced the error.

If the application now starts, the missing or damaged component was probably replaced during servicing.

If updates fail, remain pending, or do not resolve the error, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not search for the DLL separately.

Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC can then use as a source for replacing corrupted protected files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected program again.

How to interpret the results

  • “The restore operation completed successfully” means DISM completed its repair operation.
  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no protected-file corruption.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means SFC made repairs. Restart and test again.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means further component-store or recovery work is needed.
  • An error stating that repair files could not be found usually means DISM needs a matching Windows installation source.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a /Source option with a Windows installation source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Do not use an arbitrary image from another release.

Repeating DISM and SFC without recording what changed rarely adds value. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues, while its full version performs the repair; the free scan is useful when you are unsure which component is failing, but Microsoft’s built-in commands remain the appropriate baseline.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Security software may quarantine a system file after an update, failed repair, or detection. Quarantine is possible, but it is not proof that this is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent actions.
  6. Expand an entry that names windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll.
  7. Check the detection details and file path.
  8. Restore the file only if you have verified that it is a legitimate Microsoft system file and the detection is clearly a false positive.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion simply because an application is failing. If the file is repeatedly detected, update Defender, run a full scan, and investigate possible malware. Use Scan options in Windows Security to run a Full scan. If infection is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

If Protection history contains no relevant entry, return to DISM and SFC rather than restoring a file from an external download.

Fix 4: Determine whether one application or Windows itself is failing

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

The repair path changes depending on the scope of the problem.

Check whether:

  • Windows signs in normally.
  • File Explorer opens.
  • Windows Settings works.
  • More than one application reports the DLL.
  • The error appears only in one game, launcher, or business application.

If Windows itself is unstable or several programs report the file, continue treating this as a Windows component problem. Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC, then investigate disk health or recovery options.

  3. Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.
  9. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset only after confirming that the application’s local data can be recreated.
  10. If necessary, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or its official launcher.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking option before reinstalling the entire game. There is no reliable evidence that one particular game is the standard trigger for this filename, so do not assume the DLL belongs in the game’s installation directory.

If DISM and SFC succeed but only one application continues to fail, the application or one of its private dependencies is the more likely problem.

Fix 5: Check the file’s location, architecture, and signature

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Windows-protected components can have architecture-specific copies. On 64-bit Windows, the names System32 and SysWOW64 are counterintuitive, so do not copy a DLL into both folders or attempt to choose a folder manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check whether the file exists:

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Search for windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll.
  4. Right-click a result and select Open file location.
  5. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  6. Review the Details tab.
  7. Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
  8. Select the signature and choose Details to check whether Windows reports it as valid.

The expected Windows copy should be in a protected Windows system location, not beside an unrelated game executable or in a temporary download folder. A file that exists may still be damaged, unsigned, blocked, or built for the wrong architecture.

Check the installed architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type under Device specifications.

Do not replace a 64-bit system component with a historical 32-bit copy, or vice versa. Let Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Windows recovery restore the correct version.

Fix 6: Reinstall or update drivers only when diagnostics point there

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

Driver reinstallation is not a primary repair for this Windows Runtime component. Consider it only if the error began after a hardware change, a failed graphics update, or a device-specific application failure.

To check for driver problems:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the failing program.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for a device status error.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Use Update Driver if a current driver is available from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  9. If the problem began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
  10. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not remove unrelated drivers merely because a DLL error names a Windows credential API. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while the full version handles driver installation; the free scan helps identify stale hardware drivers, but it is not required to repair this DLL and the affected application may still need its own reinstall.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this error

Time needed: A few minutes to verify the correct path

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Do not begin with:

regsvr32 windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll

A Windows Runtime component is not established as something you should manually register. The command may produce an entry-point error and does not repair a missing dependency, damaged component store, wrong architecture, or invalid application installation.

Use Windows servicing instead. Only register a DLL when the software vendor or Microsoft specifically documents that registration step for that particular component.

Fix 8: Use System Restore or Windows recovery

Time needed: 20–60 minutes

Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent update, cleanup utility, security action, or system modification and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point.
  8. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files, but it is not guaranteed to restore a missing file if the restore point is unavailable or damaged.

FAQ

Is windows.security.credentials.ui.credentialpicker.dll safe?

It is a genuine Microsoft Windows Runtime component when it is the expected protected system file and has a valid Microsoft signature. Verify the file’s properties and digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should this DLL be?

It belongs in Windows-protected system locations, with architecture-specific copies where applicable. Do not place it beside a game or unrelated application, and do not copy files into both System32 and SysWOW64.

Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No verified evidence identifies it as part of those redistributables. Installing Visual C++ will not normally repair this Windows component unless a separate error explicitly names a Visual C++ runtime.

Should I download this DLL manually?

No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows version, or the wrong architecture, and a replacement file may not fix a missing dependency or damaged component store. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Security, System Restore, or official Windows recovery media instead.

What does “specified module could not be found” mean?

It can mean the named DLL is absent, but it can also indicate that a dependency is missing or that Windows cannot load the file in its current context. Check the file’s existence and signature, then repair Windows and the affected application in that order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the listed 10.0.18362.1 version current?

No conclusion about a current universal version should be drawn from that number. It is a historical version associated with an older Windows build. Windows servicing should select the version appropriate for the installed release, edition, language, and architecture.

What if SFC and DISM both succeed?

If Windows works and only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program and inspect its event log. If several Windows functions remain affected, use System Restore or Windows recovery rather than downloading the DLL.
