kbdhaw.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL for the Hawaiian keyboard layout, not a Visual C++ runtime or game dependency. If Windows reports that kbdhaw.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows or restore the related keyboard layout instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its input system when a layout is needed. The layout files normally belong under the Windows system directories and are loaded by the Windows window manager, as Microsoft explains in its keyboard-layout documentation.

The filename alone does not identify a particular game or application. An error during program startup can come from Windows input initialization, a stale language-layout entry, a damaged component store, or a dependent module.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
Time needed: 15–45 minutes, depending on updates and disk speed.

This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from a Windows location or several Windows features are malfunctioning. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker uses that repaired source to restore protected files.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates and restart when requested.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. - Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if the progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC reaches 100 percent.
A successful repair usually ends with an SFC message saying that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it found no integrity violations. Test the action that produced the error, such as signing in, switching keyboard layouts, or launching the affected program.
If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, run Windows Update again and retry. If Windows Update itself is damaged, use matching Windows installation media as a repair source or continue to the in-place repair section below.

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, create a readable summary with:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
The file sfcdetails.txt will appear on the desktop. Do not manually download kbdhaw.dll, take ownership of System32, or overwrite protected files based on an SFC report.
Fix 2: Re-add the Hawaiian keyboard layout
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
This fix targets a stale or incomplete language configuration. Windows may still request the Hawaiian layout even after a cleanup utility, language removal, rollback, or interrupted installation removed part of its component.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language > Language & region.
- Find the relevant language and select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Add the Hawaiian keyboard layout if it is available.
- Restart Windows and test input switching.
If you do not use the Hawaiian layout, remove it from the same Keyboards section, restart, and check whether the error stops.

Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language > Language.
- Select the installed language associated with the layout.
- Choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Add the Hawaiian layout, or remove it if it is unnecessary.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft’s language and keyboard settings guide notes that the matching language may need to be installed before a desired layout becomes available.
If the layout cannot be added, install pending updates, run DISM and SFC again, and retry. Language components must match the Windows release, so do not copy a layout file from another computer.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus scan time.
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection or remove a damaged file during malware cleanup. Check the security history before attempting any restoration.

- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security. - Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
kbdhaw.dll. - Run a scan before restoring anything.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance distinguishes quarantined items from removed items. Restore a file only after confirming that it is the genuine Microsoft component and that the detection is a false positive. If there is any doubt, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
A file called kbdhaw.dll in a downloads folder, temporary directory, game folder, or another user-writable location deserves separate malware investigation. Its name does not prove that it is the Windows component.
Fix 4: Confirm the file path, architecture, and Windows build
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
A 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch can cause a file to be rejected even when the filename is correct. Windows system files also need to match the installed Windows build. Public catalogues show multiple kbdhaw.dll versions across Windows releases, but there is no universally correct standalone version.
To inspect the error context:
- Note the complete path shown by the error, if one is provided.
- Open File Explorer and check whether the file is being requested from a Windows system directory or an unexpected application folder.
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Check System type for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
- Check Windows specifications for the installed edition and build.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit Windows location, or the reverse. Do not assume that the newest version found online is correct. The correct repair source is Windows Update, the Windows component store, matching installation media, or an in-place Windows repair.

If the message appears only when launching one program, inspect that program’s official support and installation state. The program may have a broken manifest or another missing dependency, while kbdhaw.dll is only the name displayed during the failed load.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Time needed: No repair time; this is a diagnostic distinction.
regsvr32 kbdhaw.dll is normally irrelevant. Keyboard-layout DLLs provide keyboard conversion tables and layout entry points such as KbdLayerDescriptor; they are not ordinary COM or ActiveX libraries that register themselves through DllRegisterServer.
Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation explains the registration model. Running regsvr32 against a keyboard-layout DLL may produce a registration error without repairing the underlying Windows component.

Fix 6: Check drivers only if the broader input system is failing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
A keyboard-layout DLL is not normally repaired through Device Manager. However, if the physical keyboard, USB controller, HID devices, or multiple input methods stopped working at the same time, check the related drivers.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and, if relevant, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties > Driver and review the status.
- Use Update driver, or uninstall the device and select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart Windows and test the keyboard.
Do not uninstall devices merely because kbdhaw.dll is missing. Driver repair will not replace a damaged Windows language component.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying several stale device drivers when the whole input stack is malfunctioning. Its free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is not needed for a normal kbdhaw.dll repair.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–60 minutes.
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a Windows update, rollback, debloating tool, language change, or cleanup operation. It does not replace a damaged component store permanently.
- Open Start and search for
Create a restore point. - Open the result and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
If the restore point does not resolve the error, run DISM and SFC. Restore points may not exist, and restoring Windows does not guarantee that a missing language component will be reinstalled.
Fix 8: Repair Windows in place if DISM and SFC fail
Time needed: 45–120 minutes.
Use matching Windows installation media when DISM cannot find repair files, SFC repeatedly reports corruption, or files disappear again after every restart. Back up important personal data first.
Use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Start setup.exe from within Windows and choose the option to keep personal files and apps. Follow the installer prompts and restart when asked.

An in-place repair refreshes Windows components without normally removing personal files and installed programs. If setup cannot preserve them, stop and verify the selected edition and repair path before continuing. Windows recovery or a clean installation may be necessary when storage hardware is failing or the installation is severely damaged.

Common triggers include:
- A corrupted or incomplete Windows component store.
- A Hawaiian keyboard layout that remains configured after its component was removed.
- A Windows update, rollback, cleanup utility, or failed language installation.
- Antivirus quarantine or malware remediation.
- Disk or filesystem corruption.
- An interrupted Windows installation.
- A mismatched or tampered third-party DLL.
- A stale registry or input-layout reference.
- An application manifest or dependent module that fails while Windows is loading input components.
The timing helps narrow the cause. An error at sign-in or while switching input languages points more strongly to Windows language configuration. An error only when starting one game or application may involve that program or a dependent module. Neither situation justifies placing a downloaded DLL in the game directory.
Why downloading kbdhaw.dll is usually the wrong fix
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong architecture. Even a genuine file may not repair the component store, language configuration, registry reference, or dependent module that caused the error.

Microsoft does not provide a dedicated standalone kbdhaw.dll download page. Restore the component through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, language settings, matching installation media, or an in-place repair. These methods preserve the relationship between the file and the Windows version that loads it.

Normally, no. Keyboard-layout DLLs are not usually self-registering COM libraries. Use DISM, SFC, and Windows language settings instead.
What if the error says “the specified module could not be found”?
That wording does not prove that kbdhaw.dll itself is absent. The file may be corrupted, incompatible, or dependent on another module that cannot load. Repair Windows first and verify the complete path and triggering action.
What if the file keeps disappearing?
Back up your data, inspect Windows Security Protection History, run a malware scan, and check storage health. Repeated corruption can indicate filesystem or drive problems. If Windows repair cannot complete, use matching installation media or an in-place repair.
