The file is associated with the Windows keyboard-layout export KbdLayerDescriptor. That detail matters because it explains why regsvr32 is not the normal fix. This DLL is not repaired by registering it like an ActiveX control or a conventional COM library.

Microsoft documents keyboard-layout architecture and installation locations in its keyboard-layout samples, while its keyboard identifier documentation lists the Hungarian layout identifier.

Where the file should be

The native Windows copy is generally located at:

%windir%System32kbdhu1.dll

On a typical installation, that means:

C:WindowsSystem32kbdhu1.dll

A 32-bit copy may appear under:

C:WindowsSysWOW64kbdhu1.dll

Do not assume every Windows installation has both copies. The exact files depend on the Windows release, installed components, and architecture.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Start with Windows Update because Microsoft can replace damaged or missing protected components through normal servicing.

Windows 11

1. Open Start > Settings.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Click Check for updates.
4. Install all available updates.
5. Restart when prompted.
6. Check whether the error returns.

Windows 10

1. Open Start > Settings.
2. Select Update & Security.
3. Open Windows Update.
4. Click Check for updates.
5. Install available updates.
6. Restart Windows.

After the restart, test the action that produced the error. If the message appeared while switching layouts, select the keyboard layout again from the taskbar input indicator. If the error appeared during startup, restart once more and check whether it was a one-time servicing problem.

If Windows Update fails, repeatedly rolls back, or reports that components could not be installed, continue with the repair commands below rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the most important repair sequence when kbdhu1.dll is missing from the Windows directories or the error appears during boot, sign-in, language switching, or normal Windows operation.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and restores them from that repaired source. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Run DISM

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
6. Enter:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Press Enter.
2. Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.

When DISM completes successfully, run SFC in the same elevated window:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected layout or application.

What the results mean

• Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. If the error remains, investigate the layout installation, quarantine history, path, or the program reporting the message.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time. If it still cannot repair the files, move to the recovery options later in this guide.
• DISM reports that source files could not be found: Windows servicing damage may be deeper, or the local repair source may be unavailable. Continue to Windows Update and the repair-reinstall options rather than downloading kbdhu1.dll.

Running these commands by hand is useful, but it can be difficult to tell which component changed when several repairs are pending. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds, while its repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the supported Windows repair path.

Fix 3: Reinstall the Hungarian keyboard layout

If you actually use Hungarian 101-key input, the layout or its language resources may have been removed or damaged.

Windows 11

1. Open Start > Settings.
2. Select Time & language.
3. Select Language & region.
4. Find the relevant language under Preferred languages.
5. Click the three dots beside it.
6. Select Language options.
7. Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard.
8. Choose the Hungarian 101-key layout if it is listed.
9. If the relevant language is not installed, return to Language & region.
10. Click Add a language, select the matching language, and complete installation.
11. Restart Windows and test the layout.

Windows 10

1. Open Start > Settings.
2. Select Time & Language.
3. Open Language.
4. Select the relevant language.
5. Click Options.
6. Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
7. Choose the Hungarian layout.
8. If it is unavailable, add the matching language first.
9. Restart and test input.

Adding the layout asks Windows to install the required language resources through supported servicing. It does not guarantee that a deeply corrupted Windows component store will be repaired, so run DISM and SFC if the file remains unavailable.

If you never use Hungarian 101-key input, you can remove that keyboard layout from the same Language options page. Removing an unused layout may stop Windows from attempting to load it, but it is not a substitute for repairing a missing protected system file when the file is absent from %windir%.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software may quarantine a system-looking DLL after a detection, a false positive, or a modified copy found outside the normal Windows path.

2. Type Windows Security.
3. Open the app.
4. Select Virus & threat protection.
5. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
6. Review recent detections involving kbdhu1.dll.
7. Expand a detection to inspect its original path and details.
8. Do not select Restore automatically.

A quarantined copy should be considered for restoration only if its original path is the expected Windows directory, the file is identified as a genuine Microsoft component, and a malware scan does not raise a concern. Restoring a malicious or altered file can put the system at risk, and Microsoft warns that Defender may detect the file again after restoration.

If the detection points to a temporary folder, Downloads, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Do not add a broad Defender exclusion just to make the error disappear.

Fix 5: Check the program and its installation path

No reliable evidence identifies a particular game, launcher, installer, or application as the normal cause of kbdhu1.dll errors. A program may simply be surfacing a Windows loader failure while Windows is trying to initialize keyboard support.

Use the error’s timing and the file location to choose the repair:

• The error appears during startup, sign-in, Settings, or layout switching: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then reinstall the keyboard layout if needed.
• The error appears only when launching one game or application: check whether the missing file is being requested from the Windows directory or from that program’s own directory.
• The file is inside the game directory: use the launcher’s verify or repair feature. If verification cannot restore the application files, reinstall that game or program from its official source.
• The file is under %windir%: repair Windows rather than placing an application copy in the system directory.
• The program was recently installed or updated: temporarily uninstall or repair that program and check whether its error disappears. Do not replace the Windows copy with a DLL bundled by an unrelated application.

If the game or launcher has a built-in file verification option, use it before reinstalling. Reinstalling the specific program is the definitive fix when the program’s own installation is damaged, but it will not repair a missing Windows keyboard-layout component.

Fix 6: Investigate drivers and keyboard customizers

A normal keyboard driver does not replace kbdhu1.dll, but third-party keyboard utilities, remapping software, macro tools, and recent driver changes can leave an invalid layout configuration or trigger errors during input initialization.

First, check recent changes:

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Keyboards.
4. Right-click the affected keyboard device.
5. Select Properties.
6. Open the Driver tab.
7. Review the driver provider and date.

rstrui.exe

1. Press Enter.
2. Select Next.
3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
4. Click Scan for affected programs.
5. Review the applications and drivers that may be affected.
6. Select Next, then Finish.
7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore changes system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It is designed not to remove personal files, but review the affected-program list before proceeding.

If no restore point exists, or restoring does not help, return to DISM and SFC results and use a repair reinstall instead. Microsoft’s System Restore documentation explains what the process changes.

Fix 8: Repair Windows without deleting apps and files

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, use a supported Windows repair-reinstall path.

Windows 11 repair reinstall

On supported Windows 11 installations:

1. Open Start > Settings.
2. Select System.
3. Select Recovery.
4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
5. Click Reinstall now.
6. Follow the prompts.
7. Restart when Windows completes the reinstall.

Microsoft says this process reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every installation.

If it is unavailable, use matching official Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Start Windows normally, open the media, run setup.exe, and choose the option that keeps personal files and apps. Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation unless you have backed up your data and intend to erase the installation.

Microsoft provides instructions for repairing the current Windows version and for reinstalling Windows with installation media.

Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL

Do not treat every .dll error as a registration problem. Running this command is not the normal repair:

regsvr32 kbdhu1.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Keyboard-layout DLLs use layout entry points such as KbdLayerDescriptor instead. Registration will usually fail or have no useful effect, and it does not restore a missing Windows component.

Why downloading kbdhu1.dll is unsafe

Avoid standalone DLL download sites websites and random file mirrors. A replacement can have:

• The wrong Windows build
• The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
• An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
• Malware or an altered payload
• A dependency on a different component version
• No ability to repair the damaged component store that caused the error
