32-bit system files used by 32-bit processes are subject to Windows file-system redirection and normally resolve through:
%windir%SysWOW64
The names are historically confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally the 64-bit system directory. Do not use these paths as instructions to copy a downloaded file manually.
What the error means
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because kbdmaori.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdmaori.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading kbdmaori.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “kbdmaori.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “This application failed to start because kbdmaori.dll was not found.”
The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the program reporting the problem.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named file is absent. It can also indicate that the file is inaccessible, damaged, the wrong architecture, or that another loader dependency is unavailable.
A missing kbdmaori.dll error can follow:
- Interrupted Windows updates
- Damaged Windows system files
- A failed language or keyboard-layout installation
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk errors
- An incorrect manual DLL replacement
- A stale input-locale or keyboard-layout registration
- An old program incorrectly treating a Windows system component as its private dependency
You do not need to actively use Māori input for every error involving this file. Windows or an application can reference a layout because it is installed, selected during sign-in, or retained in an old input-locale configuration.
First fix: update Windows, then repair system files
This is the safest and most likely repair when the file is missing from the Windows component store or has been damaged.
1. Install pending Windows updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Test the keyboard layout or the application after restarting. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

DISM repairs the Windows image that Windows uses as a source for protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
A successful repair normally ends with a message indicating that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not obtain repair files, install pending updates and try again. Advanced users can use a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess, but the source must correspond appropriately to the installed Windows version and edition.
3. Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC scans protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired component store.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and then run SFC a second time.
Restart after SFC completes. Test the Māori or NZ Aotearoa keyboard if you use it, then launch the application that reported the error.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC leaves you guessing which component changed and why, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what its repair process identifies; the scan is available before any full-version repair, and it is not required for this Windows repair.
Reinstall the Māori keyboard through Windows Settings
If you need the layout, reinstall it through Windows language settings rather than copying kbdmaori.dll.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, select Add a language.
- Search for Māori or Te reo Māori.
- Select the language and choose Next.
- Install the required language features.
- Select the language’s More options button.
- Open Language options.
- Under Keyboards, add the Māori keyboard if it is not already listed.
A full display-language change is not necessarily required. Windows may provide a keyboard layout through an installed language without requiring you to change the language used for the Windows interface.

If you do not use Māori or NZ Aotearoa input, you can remove the unused layout after Windows has been repaired:
- Open the language settings described above.
- Select the relevant language.
- Open Language options or Options.
- Under Keyboards, select the unused layout.
- Choose Remove.
Do not remove it while Windows is actively reporting a system-file error and then assume the underlying corruption has been repaired. Run DISM and SFC first.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system component after a false detection or after detecting a modified file.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
kbdmaori.dll.
Restore or allow the file only when you can establish that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed Windows component and the detection is a false positive. Do not disable antivirus protection to install a file from an unknown source.
The safer first response is to run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Windows servicing can restore the correct component and avoids trusting an arbitrary copy.
If the file repeatedly disappears after repair, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. Repeated quarantine events, unexplained system-file changes, or broader corruption also justify checking disk health and investigating the computer for malware, but the presence of this error alone does not prove an infection.
Check the file location and architecture
You can inspect the normal Windows directories without copying or replacing anything.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Select OK.
- Search for
kbdmaori.dll.
On a 64-bit installation, a 32-bit application may be affected by Windows file-system redirection and may use the corresponding 32-bit system path. Do not infer that the file is wrong merely because you find different behavior between a 32-bit and 64-bit program.
Historical Windows releases contain different 32-bit and 64-bit builds of this file. A version from an older Windows release is not a universal replacement target. Copying a file from another computer can result in:
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- An entry-point error
- A signature or integrity problem
- Instability after a later Windows update
- A mismatch between the process architecture and the DLL
Use Windows servicing or the language-feature installation to obtain the build intended for the installed operating system.
If the error appears only in one old application
When Windows itself works normally and only one old program reports kbdmaori.dll, the application may be using a stale keyboard-layout reference or incorrectly loading a system DLL as though it were a private application file.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this order:
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm whether the Māori or NZ Aotearoa layout is installed.
- Update the affected application from its publisher.
- Repair or reinstall the application using its original installer.
- Test the application under a supported Windows compatibility setting only if appropriate.
Do not place kbdmaori.dll in the program’s installation folder. The application does not own this Windows keyboard-layout component, and a private copy can create a version or architecture mismatch.
If the program’s installer requests the file even after Windows repair, record the exact executable name, installer name, Windows version and build, and whether the error occurs for other applications. That information distinguishes an application bug from a Windows component problem.
Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repairs usually do not help
kbdmaori.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout DLL. It is not a Visual C++ runtime library, DirectX binary, or .NET assembly.
Reinstalling those runtimes generally does not restore this file. Those packages are relevant only when the error names a runtime component belonging to them or when the application has a separate runtime failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRank #3
Likewise, Windows Features and Device Manager are not normal repair locations for this file:
- Windows Features controls optional Windows components, not the ordinary registration of keyboard-layout DLLs.
- Device Manager manages hardware drivers, not keyboard-layout DLL registration.
- Reinstalling a keyboard device driver will not normally restore
kbdmaori.dll.
If a physical keyboard also has problems, you can check its driver separately:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected keyboard.
- Choose Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows if you uninstall it.
That procedure addresses hardware-driver problems, not a damaged Windows keyboard-layout component.
If you are also tracking down a separate stale device driver, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, with installation handled by the full version; it is not required to repair kbdmaori.dll, and Windows language or system-file servicing remains the relevant path here.

Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdmaori.dll
Keyboard-layout DLLs are not ordinary COM or ActiveX libraries. They are loaded by the Windows input system and provide keyboard layout data through the standard KbdLayerDescriptor entry point.
regsvr32 is appropriate only for DLLs that specifically implement registration procedures, such as certain COM components. It does not repair a missing Windows keyboard layout and may produce an error that distracts from the real problem.
What not to do
Avoid these common but unsafe responses:
- Do not download
kbdmaori.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy a file into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder based only on a search result. - Do not use a file from another Windows computer without establishing the exact build and architecture.
- Do not treat an old file version or hash as a universal target.
- Do not disable antivirus protection to install an unverified DLL.
- Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a substitute for Windows servicing.
- Do not assume that an application’s “reinstall the program” message proves the application owns the file.
- Do not claim malware solely because the file is missing.
There is no appropriate standalone Microsoft kbdmaori.dll redistributable download. The safe official sources are Windows Update, Windows language settings, DISM, SFC, System Restore, and Windows recovery or installation media when those tools are required.
Use System Restore if the failure began after a recent change
System Restore can help when the problem started after an update, driver installation, application installation, or other system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Select OK.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, or updates. If no suitable restore point exists, return to DISM and SFC rather than downloading the DLL manually.
When Windows recovery is necessary
If DISM repeatedly fails, SFC cannot repair protected files, and System Restore does not help, the installation may have broader corruption.
Before using recovery options:
- Back up important personal files.
- Record the Windows edition and build.
- Note the exact error and executable reporting it.
- Confirm whether the Māori keyboard is required.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
An in-place Windows repair using matching installation media can preserve personal files and installed applications while replacing damaged Windows components, but follow Microsoft’s current recovery guidance carefully. A reset or clean installation is more disruptive and should be considered only after less destructive repair options have been evaluated.
FAQ
Is kbdmaori.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component when it is the genuine file supplied by Windows. The filename alone does not prove that a copied file is authentic, so use Windows servicing rather than an arbitrary download.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do I need this file if I never type in Māori?
Not necessarily. The file may be referenced because the Māori or NZ Aotearoa layout is installed, selected during sign-in, or retained in an input-locale configuration. After repairing Windows, remove the unused keyboard layout through Language settings.
Should I put kbdmaori.dll in System32?
No. Windows should install and service this component in the correct location. On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 serve different architecture paths, so manual copying can make the problem worse.
Will reinstalling the application fix the error?
It may help when the error is limited to an old application with a stale keyboard-layout reference. However, repair Windows first. Reinstalling the application is not proof that the application owns kbdmaori.dll.
What if SFC says it cannot repair some files?
Restart, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Then run:
sfc /scannow
again. If the failure persists, review the CBS log and consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
What information should I collect for further diagnosis?
Record the exact error text, the executable that displays it, Windows version and build, whether kbdmaori.dll exists in the relevant system directory, the results of DISM and SFC, whether the Māori keyboard is installed, and whether the issue affects more than one application.
