Start with this quick diagnosis
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: Windows itself, a game, or another application.
- When it appears: at startup, after login, when switching keyboard layouts, or after a Windows update.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Whether the Traditional Mongolian keyboard layout is installed: open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.

kbdmonst.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. It provides the Traditional Mongolian (Standard) keyboard layout, so an error involving kbdmonst.dll usually points to damaged Windows components, an incomplete language feature, a failed update, or antivirus quarantine rather than a missing game runtime.
What kbdmonst.dll does
Microsoft identifies Traditional Mongolian (Standard) with keyboard-layout ID 00010850, introduced with Windows 8.1. Windows 11 also lists a separate Traditional Mongolian (MNS) layout with ID 00020850; that is not the same layout.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Not every installation will contain the file in both locations.

The exact file version and size depend on your Windows build, architecture, and servicing state. Do not use a version table from another Windows release as a download specification.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
A failed or incomplete update can leave a keyboard-layout component missing or damaged.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the PC.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Test the program or keyboard layout after restarting. If the error remains, continue with the repair commands below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows includes two supported repair tools:
- DISM repairs the Windows component store.
- SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
Run DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the original program again. If it says that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run SFC once more. If the result is unchanged, use the matching installation-source method in the next section.
Repeating commands without knowing whether Windows changed can make this process difficult to track. If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use an official Windows installation source that closely matches your installed edition, language, architecture, and build.
The general command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder in your matching repair source. An unmatched source can create additional servicing errors, so do not point DISM at a random Windows installation or copied system folder.
Run sfc /scannow again after DISM completes, then restart.

Fix 3: Reinstall the keyboard layout
Adding the layout again can restore a removed or incomplete language feature. It may not repair a corrupted DLL by itself, so use DISM and SFC as well if Windows reports file damage.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, select the language associated with the layout.
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, choose Add a keyboard.
- Add Traditional Mongolian (Standard) if it appears.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
If the layout is not listed, select Add a language under Preferred languages. Install the matching language and the language features Windows offers, then return to Language options and check the keyboard list again. A full display-language change is not always required.
Do not confuse Traditional Mongolian (Standard), ID 00010850, with Traditional Mongolian (MNS), ID 00020850. Adding the wrong layout may not resolve an error tied to the Standard layout.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Microsoft Defender or another security product may have quarantined the file. Do not immediately restore it.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review the detection, action, and file path.
- Run a scan before restoring anything.
Restore the file only when its path, Microsoft signature, and surrounding evidence confirm that it is the genuine Windows component and the detection is a false positive. Allowing a malicious file can put the computer at risk. Do not disable antivirus merely to force a DLL into System32.
If the file was quarantined and Windows cannot restore it, repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC instead of copying a replacement from the internet.
Fix 5: Verify the file, path, and architecture
If the file exists but the error continues, the copy being loaded may be damaged, unsigned, incompatible, or located somewhere unexpected.

Check the expected folders
In File Explorer, enter each path in the address bar:
%SystemRoot%System32
and, on 64-bit Windows:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
Search for KBDMONST.DLL. The filename is not enough to prove that the file is correct.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click
KBDMONST.DLL. - Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A missing or invalid signature deserves investigation, especially if the file came from an unofficial download or was copied from another computer.
Check the file details
Open the Details tab and compare the description, company, and original filename with the Windows keyboard-layout identity. Public file inventories can help identify a file, but they are not authoritative sources for the correct version, size, or replacement binary.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If kbdmonst.dll began failing immediately after an update, driver installation, language change, or system modification, System Restore may reverse the related system changes.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose an appropriate restore point.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore and restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. If no restore point exists or the problem remains, use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptoms point there
A keyboard-layout DLL is not normally repaired through Device Manager. Still, if the problem appeared with keyboard, USB, chipset, or system-device failures, check for related driver problems.
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not uninstall random devices to fix kbdmonst.dll. If Device Manager shows no warning and the error is specifically about this DLL, return to Windows servicing and language-layout repair.
Finding stale drivers manually across several hardware vendors can involve checking many versions and rebooting repeatedly. Do not download kbdmonst.dll separately
Avoid DLL download sites websites and forum attachments. A manually downloaded copy can be:
- Malicious or modified
- The wrong architecture
- From a different Windows build
- Unsigned
- Incompatible with the installed servicing level
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also hide the actual problem and create additional loader errors. There is no verified standalone Microsoft download package for this individual file.

Do not run:
regsvr32 kbdmonst.dll
Keyboard-layout DLLs use the KbdLayerDescriptor export to describe their layout. They are not ordinary COM or ActiveX libraries that register through DllRegisterServer.
regsvr32 may therefore produce a misleading message such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” That result does not repair a missing or damaged keyboard layout.

If the error returns after every reboot
A recurring error often means Windows or a startup process is requesting a stale layout registration.

- Settings > Time & language > Language & region for unwanted or incomplete keyboard layouts.
- Task Manager > Startup apps for software that starts when you sign in.
- Task Scheduler for tasks associated with recently installed software.
- Event Viewer for errors recorded at the time of the failure.
- Antivirus Protection history for repeated quarantine events.
If the problem began after a Windows update, complete all pending updates first. If it began immediately after a recent change and System Restore is available, restore to a point before that change.
Persistent corruption after DISM and SFC can also indicate disk problems or malware. Run a complete security scan and investigate disk-health warnings. If Windows remains damaged, use System Restore, Windows recovery, or an in-place repair installation.
FAQ
Is kbdmonst.dll malware?
No. kbdmonst.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component. However, malware can use the same filename, so verify the path and digital signature rather than trusting the name alone.
Why does it appear if I never use Mongolian?
Windows components can be loaded by language profiles, layout registrations, startup processes, updates, or damaged configuration even when you never type in Mongolian. The error does not prove that you intentionally installed or used the layout.
Does Windows 10 include it?
The Traditional Mongolian (Standard) layout was introduced with Windows 8.1, and Windows releases can contain different builds and servicing states. The installed file’s exact version and presence depend on the Windows installation and language features.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It generally indicates a corrupt file, incompatible binary, wrong architecture, or a file from another Windows build. Repair Windows rather than replacing the DLL with an arbitrary copy.
