Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which program shows the message: Windows itself, a game, or one application.
- When it appears: during startup, sign-in, language switching, or only when launching one program.
- The exact path mentioned: a Windows folder or an application folder.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.

kbdnso.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component. It provides the Sesotho sa Leboa layout, also called Northern Sotho, and is also associated with the Setswana layout.
It is normally installed under %WINDIR%System32 when the relevant Windows language or keyboard components are present. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary game dependency. The filename alone cannot identify which program triggered the message.
What the error means
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because kbdnso.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdnso.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting kbdnso.dll.”
- “Error loading kbdnso.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “kbdnso.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. They do not prove that the application shipped with kbdnso.dll. A damaged Windows component, incomplete language installation, antivirus quarantine, or application-specific loading problem can all produce a similar message.
Microsoft identifies Sesotho sa Leboa with keyboard identifier 0000046C and Setswana with 00000432 in its Windows language and keyboard data.

Fix 1: Repair Windows component files
This is the safest first repair when the error affects Windows broadly, appeared after an interrupted update, or occurs alongside other missing system files.
Install updates and restart
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if no update specifically mentions keyboards or languages.
Then run the two repair commands below. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker uses that repaired source to check protected files.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer after both commands complete.
- Reproduce the original error.
Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker repair procedure.
Success means the error no longer appears, the affected language can be selected, or the application starts normally. If the error remains, continue with the language and keyboard repair below rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component is damaged can make troubleshooting feel like guesswork. Fix 2: Reinstall the language or keyboard layout
A missing kbdnso.dll can result from a removed, incomplete, or damaged language component. This is especially likely if the problem began after adding or removing a language.
Reinstall language features in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, check whether the relevant language is listed.
- If it is absent, click Add a language.
- Search for the appropriate language and select Next.
- Choose the language features you need.
- Click Install.
- Restart Windows.
To inspect or re-add a keyboard:
- Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Find the relevant language.
- Click its three-dot menu.
- Select Language options.
- Look under Keyboards.
- Click Add a keyboard and choose the required layout.
- Restart, then test language switching from the taskbar input indicator.
A keyboard layout may be listed under a different display language than expected. Check the keyboard entries under each installed language rather than assuming the layout must appear under a particular language name. Microsoft explains these settings in its keyboard and input-layout instructions.
The equivalent Windows 10 path is Start > Settings > Time & Language > Language. Select a language, choose Options, and review its keyboard entries. If the language is missing, use Add a preferred language.

Success means the keyboard appears in the language options and Windows no longer reports kbdnso.dll as missing. If Windows refuses to install the language, return to Fix 1 and repair the component store first.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate system file after a detection. The detection itself does not prove that the file is malware.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any detection related to
kbdnso.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name looks familiar.
A credible Windows copy should be in the expected Windows component location and have a valid Microsoft digital signature. If the path is an application folder, a temporary folder, or another unexpected location, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Only restore the file when you have verified that it is the genuine Microsoft component and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If you are uncertain, do not restore the quarantined copy. Use DISM, SFC, and language-package installation to obtain a correct Windows component instead.
Fix 4: Determine whether one application is at fault
If the message appears only when launching one program, the program may be damaged or may be requesting the Windows layout incorrectly. kbdnso.dll is not normally an application runtime dependency.
Try this order:
- Close the affected application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For a desktop program without Repair or Reset:
- Download a fresh installer from the software developer’s official site.
- Uninstall the existing program through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version from the official installer.
- If the program has a launcher with a file-verification option, run that verification before reinstalling.
Do not copy kbdnso.dll into the application directory unless the software vendor explicitly documents that requirement. Check the exact path in the error and review the application’s own logs or Windows Event Viewer if the issue continues.

If other applications and Windows language switching work normally, an application repair is more likely to help than changing system files manually.

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that support COM self-registration through an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows keyboard-layout DLL is not repaired by registry registration.
Running commands such as these is therefore not an appropriate fix:
regsvr32 kbdnso.dll
or:
regsvr32 %WINDIR%System32kbdnso.dll
They may produce an error, or appear to complete without addressing the missing language component. Microsoft describes the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation and explains the required self-registration model in its COM documentation.
Fix 6: Check architecture and file location
Do not replace a Windows component with an arbitrary 32-bit or 64-bit copy.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit system components. The names are unintuitive, so use Windows servicing and the language package instead of choosing a folder manually.
To inspect the reported location:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32. - Press Enter.
- Search for
kbdnso.dll. - Right-click any result, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
The absence of the file there does not by itself prove corruption because the relevant language features may not be installed. A copy with an invalid signature or an unexpected path deserves a full security investigation.

Drivers are not normally the cause of a missing keyboard-layout DLL, but update Windows and the physical keyboard driver if input problems began after hardware or driver changes:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected keyboard.
- Choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Avoid uninstalling a working keyboard device unless Windows support specifically instructs you to do so. Hunting through multiple driver versions is unnecessary for most kbdnso.dll errors. If SFC cannot repair kbdnso.dll
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Run DISM again:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Restart Windows.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Review the repair details in:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
If the problem began immediately after a Windows Update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and review recently installed updates. Use Windows recovery options to remove a problematic update only when the timing and symptoms clearly match.
On supported Windows 11 installations, another option is:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings, according to Microsoft’s repair-reinstall instructions.

Use System Restore if the error followed a recent application installation, driver change, or system modification and a restore point is available:
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files. Microsoft lists it among its Windows recovery options.

If the error persists after DISM, SFC, language reinstallation, and application repair, perform a full malware scan, check Event Viewer, test another Windows user profile, and consider an in-place Windows repair. A clean installation should be the last resort.
Should you download kbdnso.dll manually
No. Random DLL download sites sites and copied files can contain malware, use the wrong Windows build, have the wrong architecture, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail to match the installed language package. Manual copying can also hide the actual servicing problem.

FAQ
Is kbdnso.dll safe?
The genuine Microsoft Windows component is legitimate. Verify its path and digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone. A suspicious copy outside the expected Windows component location should be scanned and investigated.
Does every Windows PC contain it?
No. Its presence can depend on installed language and keyboard components. Not finding it is not automatically a malware sign.
Can Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET repair it?
No. Those packages do not provide this Windows keyboard-layout component.
Why does it appear when a program starts?
The program may be requesting a Windows keyboard layout, or the Windows loader may be reporting a damaged component while the program initializes. If only one application triggers the message, repair or reinstall that application.
Will regsvr32 fix the problem?
No. Keyboard-layout DLLs are not repaired through COM DLL registration.
What if Defender detected it?
Review Protection history, verify the path and Microsoft signature, and restore only when the detection is clearly a false positive. Otherwise repair Windows and reinstall the relevant language component.
