kbdolch.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component, not a game file or Visual C++ runtime. If Windows reports that kbdolch.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows and the Ol Chiki input feature instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
kbdolch.dll is the Ol Chiki Keyboard Layout DLL. Ol Chiki is a writing system associated with Santali, and Windows uses this component to translate keyboard input into the appropriate characters.

You do not need this layout on every computer. If Ol Chiki is not installed or used, an error can indicate damaged Windows language metadata, an interrupted update, or a stale input registration rather than a missing application dependency.
Causes matched to the symptom
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| “kbdolch.dll is missing” after a Windows update | Incomplete servicing or a damaged system component | Run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or another required component is unavailable | Repair Windows and inspect the file path |
| Error appears when switching keyboard layouts | Damaged or incomplete Ol Chiki installation | Remove and re-add the keyboard layout |
| Error appears while starting an unrelated program | The program triggered Windows input services, or a loader dialog identified the wrong initiating process | Identify the process and repair Windows input components |
| File was quarantined | Antivirus action or a false positive | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
regsvr32 reports a registration error |
The wrong repair method was used | Do not register this keyboard-layout DLL |
| Error continues after SFC | Component-store, update, profile, or disk corruption | Repair the component store, test another profile, and use recovery options |
A “missing” message does not always mean the file is physically absent. It can also mean that the file is inaccessible, corrupted, incompatible, or that another dependent module could not be loaded.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
Start with Windows servicing because kbdolch.dll is part of Windows.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Try the action that previously produced the error.
If the error disappears after the restart, the problem was probably caused by an incomplete update or damaged servicing state.
If Windows Update fails, record the error shown in Settings and continue with DISM and SFC below. Do not repeatedly copy DLL files into application folders.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands finish.
- Test the keyboard layout or program again.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. That is a successful result. It may also report that no integrity violations were found; in that case, the issue may involve the language feature, antivirus quarantine, or a stale registration.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more. If the result is unchanged, review the CBS log, confirm that Windows Update works, and run DISM again. Where DISM cannot obtain repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess in its Windows repair guidance.
Running these commands manually is useful, but repeated repairs can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problem and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features are handled by the full version.
Fix 3: Remove and re-add the Ol Chiki keyboard
If the file is intact but the language feature is damaged, reinstall the relevant keyboard layout through Windows Settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Choose Language & region.
- Find the language associated with the keyboard.
- Select the … menu beside it.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select the Ol Chiki layout.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Language options.
- Select Add a keyboard.
- Add the Ol Chiki layout again.
If the layout is not available, select Add a language under Preferred languages and install the required language features first. Microsoft notes that a full display-language change is not always necessary for a keyboard layout, but the matching language may need to be installed before the layout appears. See Microsoft’s language and keyboard settings.
After adding it, select the input indicator in the taskbar and choose the Ol Chiki keyboard. If it works there without an error, the input registration has been restored.
If you never use Ol Chiki, you can leave the layout removed. If the error continues, damaged Windows language metadata or a stale registration may still need repair.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file, although a file with the correct name is not automatically safe.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
kbdolch.dll. - Open the entry and inspect its original path and detection details.
Do not restore an item simply because the filename is familiar. A genuine copy should come from a Windows system or component location and have trustworthy Microsoft provenance. A copy found in a temporary directory or an unrelated application folder should be investigated first.
Run a scan before restoring anything:
- In Virus & threat protection, select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan where available.
- Restart and repeat the DISM and SFC repair sequence.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains that restored files can be detected again. Do not allow an unknown copy merely to suppress the error.
Fix 5: Verify the file path and signature
A file named kbdolch.dll is not genuine merely because its name is correct.
If you locate a copy:
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Confirm that the path is a Windows component or system location.
- Do not copy the file beside an application to make the error disappear.
The normal location is %windir%System32, but Windows servicing can keep additional copies elsewhere. A copy in an application directory may be duplicated, bundled, altered, or unrelated to the Windows component.
Do not choose between 32-bit and 64-bit downloads based on the filename. The correct architecture is supplied by Windows servicing and the installed operating system. A 32-bit and 64-bit DLL are not interchangeable simply because they share a name.

Fix 6: Identify the program that triggers the message
The program visible when the error appears is not necessarily the owner of kbdolch.dll. It may be invoking Windows input services, or the loader dialog may be reporting a failure initiated by another process.
If the message appears only with one program:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Note which process is active when the error appears.
- Check Event Viewer for a matching application or system error.
- Test the Ol Chiki layout in another program, such as Notepad.
- Test the same operation from another Windows user account.
If the layout fails everywhere, focus on Windows repair and language settings. If it works in another account, rebuild the affected profile’s language and input configuration instead of replacing the DLL.
If only one program triggers the dialog, update or repair that program through its official installer after Windows itself has been repaired. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a normal fix for kbdolch.dll, because this file is a keyboard-layout component rather than one of those runtime libraries.
Fix 7: Check drivers only for broader input problems
A keyboard driver is separate from kbdolch.dll. Updating a driver will not normally restore a missing Windows keyboard-layout component, but it can be relevant if the physical keyboard, USB device, or input device is also malfunctioning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo check the device:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not uninstall a working keyboard device merely because kbdolch.dll is missing. If Device Manager shows a warning icon or several input devices are failing, document the device model and obtain drivers through the computer or device manufacturer’s official support channel.
When several driver versions must be checked manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version.
Fix 8: Use Windows recovery if repair still fails
If DISM, SFC, language reinstallation, and malware checks do not resolve the error, broader Windows corruption may be involved.
Before recovery:
- Back up personal files.
- Check disk health and available storage.
- Confirm whether other Windows files are also failing.
- Test the keyboard layout in a new local user account.
- Review Event Viewer and the CBS log for recurring errors.
You can then consider:
- System Restore, if a suitable restore point exists.
- A Windows recovery option that preserves personal files where appropriate.
- An in-place Windows repair installation using matching installation media.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, but it is not a substitute for malware removal. Microsoft describes the available choices in its Windows recovery options.
Why you should not download kbdolch.dll
Random DLL download pages create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or be tampered with.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The version may not match your Windows build.
- Copying it into
System32may create permission or servicing problems. - Copying it beside an application can hide the real Windows repair issue.
- A missing dependency or stale language registration will remain unresolved.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows language settings, and official recovery tools instead. These methods restore the component through Windows servicing and preserve the relationship between the DLL, its architecture, and the installed language features.
Why regsvr32 does not fix this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Keyboard-layout DLLs provide layout tables and window-manager entry points instead.
Running a command such as this is therefore not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 kbdolch.dll
A registration error does not prove that the file is corrupt. It usually means the wrong tool was applied to the wrong type of DLL.

FAQ
Is kbdolch.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component identified as the Ol Chiki Keyboard Layout DLL.
Is kbdolch.dll malware?
A genuine copy should be a Microsoft-signed Windows component in a Windows system or component location. A file with the same name in an application, temporary, or download folder should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Does every Windows computer need it?
No. It matters when the Ol Chiki keyboard or input locale is installed or selected.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It is a Windows keyboard-layout component, not one of those runtime packages.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I copy it into System32?
Generally no. Let Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the language-feature installer restore the correct copy and architecture.
Why does the error appear when launching a game or another program?
The program may invoke Windows input services, or the loader dialog may identify a process that is not the owner of the DLL. The DLL name alone cannot establish that the application itself is damaged.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If the problem remains, check Windows Update, review the CBS log, use a matching repair source, and consider Windows recovery.
