mp4_http.dll is usually an application file from an older video converter or editor, not a Windows component. If Windows says it is missing, the safest fix is to identify the program that needs it and repair or reinstall that program from its original installer.
Older public software inventories associate this DLL with Aimersoft Video Converter, Wondershare Video Converter products, and older Wondershare video-editor software. The filename alone cannot prove which application installed it, so do not copy a replacement into C:WindowsSystem32.

1. Identify the application that displays the error
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Read the complete error message and note the program name, executable name, or file path. Common messages include:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- “The program can’t start because mp4_http.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “mp4_http.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Then check which application starts immediately before the message appears. Look for an old video converter, editor, DVD tool, or media utility.

Also check installed programs:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Aimersoft, Wondershare, Video Converter, or Video Editor.
- If you find the likely program, select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
If the error appears during startup without an obvious program, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Check the Startup apps list for an old video application. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
A full path beside the program is useful. An application folder is more plausible than a Windows system folder. Do not delete the program yet if you need to identify it.
2. Repair the original video application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Use Windows repair first when the affected program is still installed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected video application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if Windows provides that button.
- Start the application again.
Repair does not remove the program’s personal data in the same way as a reset. If Repair is unavailable, open Control Panel:
- Search Windows for Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the video application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If the program opens normally afterward, the missing file was restored or the installation was repaired. If the error remains, continue with a complete reinstall.
3. Reinstall the program that originally installed the DLL
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most reliable fix for an application-private DLL.
- Save any projects, presets, or license information used by the video application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when the uninstall finishes.
- Obtain the installer from the software publisher’s official product, download, or support page.
- Install the same product family and, when possible, the same release intended for your license.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring custom plugins or extensions.
If the original installer is stored on another drive, an old backup, or removable media, use that package instead of searching for the DLL separately. Current versions of a publisher’s software may not use this legacy file, so do not assume that installing a modern product will restore it.
If reinstalling fixes the error, leave the DLL in the application’s installation directory. Do not move it to System32 or SysWOW64.
4. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may have removed or quarantined the file.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning the video application or
mp4_http.dll. - Expand the entry and review its location and detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore is reasonable only when you recognize the application, obtained it from a legitimate installer, and the file was located inside that application’s folder. The safer approach is usually to reinstall the parent application from a fresh official installer.
If Defender repeatedly quarantines the file after reinstalling, stop restoring it. Scan the installer and the computer, then contact the software publisher.

5. Check for a 32-bit application mismatch
Time needed: 5 minutes
Public file records describe mp4_http.dll as a 32-bit application DLL. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit video program, but the program’s files must belong to the same expected build.
To check the application:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Start the affected program if possible.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if Windows offers it.
- Check whether the application is listed as 32-bit.
You can also right-click the program executable, select Properties, and inspect the Compatibility tab. Do not replace a 32-bit application DLL with a file taken from another program or from a different release. Architecture and dependent files may not match.
An “entry point not found” or “not designed to run on Windows” message usually means the files are mismatched or corrupted, not that registering the DLL will solve the problem.
6. Use a launcher’s Verify or Repair function
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
If the video application came through a software launcher, open that launcher and inspect the program’s menu. Look for options named:
- Verify files
- Repair
- Scan and repair
- Validate installation
Run the verification and allow it to replace missing files. This is preferable to copying a DLL manually because the launcher can restore the files expected by that exact application build.
If verification reports that the installation is incomplete, uninstall and reinstall the application through the same launcher.
7. Repair Windows components only when other Windows programs are affected
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
mp4_http.dll is not established as a Windows file, so DISM and SFC are not the primary repair for this error. Use them when multiple Windows applications fail, Windows itself is unstable, or protected system files are also reporting corruption.

Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThese commands repair protected Windows components. They normally will not recreate a DLL shipped privately with an old video converter.
If manually identifying damaged Windows components and repeating repair commands is becoming difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the original video application remains the definitive fix for this file.
8. Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: 1 minute
regsvr32 is intended for registrable DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that mp4_http.dll is a COM or ActiveX server.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 mp4_http.dll
If the DLL is missing, registration cannot restore it. If it is an ordinary media-processing library, registration is irrelevant and may produce another error. Microsoft explains the tool’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
9. Avoid random DLL replacements
A standalone download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, incompatible dependencies, or a different build. It can also hide the real problem: a damaged installation, a leftover startup entry, or a missing dependency of mp4_http.dll.
Do not copy an unverified file into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s folder
The correct source is the original video application’s installer, official launcher, or publisher support process. If no parent application can be identified, investigate the executable path before attempting any replacement.
10. Update drivers only when the error includes broader graphics problems
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A graphics driver normally does not restore an application-private DLL. Consider a driver update only if the video program also crashes with display errors, hardware acceleration failures, black screens, or other graphics symptoms.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if an update is installed.
You can also obtain the driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer. Do not uninstall a working driver solely because mp4_http.dll is missing.
Recommended Free Tools
If checking several hardware vendors and matching driver versions manually is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation requires the full version, and driver work is not a substitute for reinstalling the video application.
11. Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
If the error began immediately after an update, cleanup operation, or software removal, System Restore may help when an appropriate restore point exists.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
Microsoft lists System Restore and other recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.
System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling the original application. It may also remove later applications or updates, so review the results before confirming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon causes of the error
| Cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Video converter or editor was partially uninstalled | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Review Protection history and prefer a clean reinstall |
| Application files belong to different releases | Remove them and install one matching build |
| A dependency of the DLL is missing | Reinstall the complete parent application |
| A startup entry points to an old program | Find its executable path and remove or repair the obsolete application |
| Windows components are corrupted | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Recent system change caused the failure | Consider System Restore |
What to provide if the error remains
Record these details before asking for support:
- The exact error wording
- The program and executable name
- The full path shown in the message
- The application version
- Whether Windows 10 or Windows 11 is installed
- Whether the application is 32-bit
- Antivirus Protection history results
- Any Application Error entry in Event Viewer
To open Event Viewer, right-click Start, select Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application, and inspect entries created at the time of the crash.
FAQ
Is mp4_http.dll a Windows system file?
There is no reliable evidence that it belongs to Windows, Microsoft Media Foundation, DirectX, .NET, or the Visual C++ Redistributable. Treat it as a third-party application file.
Should I download mp4_http.dll separately?
No. A standalone replacement may be unsafe or incompatible. Restore the program that originally installed it.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The application normally expects its own DLL beside its executable or in its installation directories.
Will installing Visual C++ or DirectX fix it?
Usually not. Those runtimes may be dependencies in some applications, but they do not normally recreate an application-private mp4_http.dll.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency used by the DLL may be missing, or the DLL may be incompatible with the application. Reinstalling the complete parent program is the practical first test.
What if I cannot identify the parent program?
Find the executable named in the error, inspect its file location, review startup entries, and check installed applications. Do not replace the DLL until you know which program needs it.
